The now world-renowned Persona series started out as a little RPG for the PS1, released in 1996, that was a spin-off of the Megami Tensei series of RPGs. It offered an interesting departure from its contemporaries, mixing in Jungian psychology and a modern-day Japanese setting. The game retained some of the components of its parent series while setting the standard for what was to come later in the Persona series. It received an English localization in the form of Revelations: Persona, which was heavily localized and Americanized as well as made slightly easier.

In 2009, a PSP remake of the game (the one I'll be playing) was released that included updated graphics and UI, new music, animated cutscenes, and multiple difficulties. Even more fortunately for English speakers, the English version did away with the old localization and was translated from the ground-up with the Japanese setting left intact. This included the game's second quest, which had been gutted entirely from the English PS1 release.

I hope that series veterans and newcomers both will enjoy this look at Persona's somewhat neglected beginning chapter.

About the LP

This LP will be mostly screenshot, with videos for boss battles and animated cutscenes.

One really divisive element of Persona's PSP remake was the music, with the amount of tracks being reduced and updated to fit the more modern Persona 3/4 style. I personally enjoy tracks from both the original game and the remake, though err on the side of thinking that the original music fits the atmosphere better. In order to have the best of both worlds, this LP will include links to both the original music and the remake's music, indicated by either a or .

No spoilers, please! Discussion of other Persona entries is okay, as long as no major spoilers are being flung around. In addition, discussion of the original PS1 version's content up to the latest update is cool.

Update 1 - The Persona Game

:siren: PS1 Opening :siren:
:siren: PSP Opening :siren:

I personally prefer the tone and atmosphere of the PS1 opening, but both versions boast excellent imagery and symbolism.

Like I mentioned in the OP, the PSP version comes with three difficulties. All they do is either decrease or increase enemy damage, so I'm sticking with Normal.

I forgot myself and knew only my
happiness as a butterfly. Soon,
I awoke, and I was myself again.
Did I dream that I was a butterfly?
Or do I now dream that I am a man?

Strange Atmosphere
Door, Frozen Shut

The scene opens on seven high-schoolers, presumably goofing off instead of doing any work.

Dude, if that really worked and I could see my future, I'd be on easy street. You sure you ain't got the brain rot, Hidehiko?

Maybe not seeing the future, exactly, but weird stuff does happen! I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is if you are, Mark.

Alright... You're on. I'll bet you an all-you-can-eat dinner at the Peace Diner on Joy Street.

Are you guys serious? Yo Kei, Yukino! Who're you guys gonna side with?

Ugh! You guys are so cold, y'know?

Mark turns to face the last remaining student - the main player character.

Hey, who're you with? It's gotta be me, right?

Sorry, Mark, but betting on weird things is what a teenager's gotta do.

Sheesh, you too? All y'alls crazy.
Heeheehee... This'll be fun! Awright, let's get started!

Brown, Mark, Ayase, and Elly arrange themselves in a square, one person in each corner.

Umm. Persona! Persona! Please come here!

When one person finishes the incantation, they must then walk to the next corner and tag the next participant.

Persona! Persona! Come here!

Hurry it up! All-you-can-eat! All-you-can-eat!
Okay, okay... Persona, Persona. C'mere... I guess.

Persona, Persona! Please come to us...

Elly walks to the empty corner where Ayase was, completing the ritual.

The rest of the group gathers back in the middle of the room.

Hehe... Looks like I win.
*Sigh* Happy now? Hurry up and go get the teacher.
W-Wait! Hold up! One more time! Please!? Mark screwed it up! C'mon, you gotta take it seriously when you do it.
Oh, you little...! What a sore loser.

:siren: Scene - Strange Phenomena :siren:

New to the PSP version are animated cutscenes, which I'll both provide in their entirety and screenshot and transcribe below. The original Japanese version only had subtitles, while the English version adds voice acting.

Wha...What is...?

Huh? It's too late now to ask to--

Whoa!

The girl in white begins to sob as the group looks on at her.

Girl: Help me...

Lightning gathers and crashes throughout the room, causing the screen to flash white.

Yukino!

As Nanjo runs to help Yukino, bolts hit him and Mark as well.

The last one down is the protagonist.

As unconsciousness sets in, a yellow butterfly flutters onto screen and flies through a plethora of gears, buildings, and other objects.

A single masked man greets us.

Welcome. It's a pleasure to meet you. I am Philemon, a dweller between consciousness and unconsciousness. And now, a simple test: can you state your name?

Name Entry
Name Entry

For names, I go with the names given in the manga adaption - Naoya "Naorin" Toudou.

:siren: Scene - The Power of Persona :siren:

Splendid. There aren't many who can remember their identity when in this domain. It seems you passed that test. But tell me this: are you aware of the many and varied selves you harbor within you?

The selves effused with divine love...

...the self capable of demonic cruelty...
People live by wearing different masks. Your current self may be only one of those innumerable masks. You, though... You have a very firm grip on your identity.

I respect your strong will, and in return I grant this power - "Persona." It is the power to summon the selves within you, the gods and the demons you harbor. The time is soon when you will need this power.

Now you must return to your proper time and place.

Indeed. It's rather extraordinary.
Think he's seeing it now too?

School Days
Educational Institution (Dungeon - After School)

Ahaha, welcome to the infirmary. You sure look cute when you're asleep.

Before anyone else can say anything, the door bursts open and a teacher comes hurrying in.

Thank goodness you're awake, Naoya! I was so scared when I heard you'd collapsed!

I'm sorry you had to deal with my students, Natsumi.
C'mon, taking care of students is her whole job! What's so bad about us...?
Now, now, Masao! I want you to think about what you've done! Anyway, Eriko and Ayase told me what happened. No helping out for you today! Instead, go get yourselves checked out at Mikage Hospital and head home!

Oh, not like that. I can tell by looking at you that you're perfectly sane. But I'm worried you might have gotten hurt while collapsing, so go see the doc.
So there is something that can faze you, Ms. Saeko...Alright, we'll go.
Speaking of Mikage Hospital, wasn't a student in your class staying there?
You mean Maki, right...?
Yes, that's right. You should visit her while you're there. She's been laid up there for over a year now... I'm sure she's lonesome.

With that conversation done and a goal set, we now have control of Naoya. Rooms like this are viewed and explored in an isometric view.

You can interact with people to talk to them and grab items from boxes. Naoya borrows some aspirin from Nurse Natsumi.

People and objects that can be interacted with display a small icon when you stand in front of them.

What were you doing, anyway? I asked you to prepare for the sports festival. We only have a month left and nothing's ready yet. Should we just cancel it this year...?
I know I couldn't take being cooped up in the hospital for an entire year. Let's go cheer her up!
Mikage Hospital, huh? That's kind of a long walk from school. It's way to the northeast. You leave the school, head north...And go all the way to the 3rd ward, then take a right at the Mikage Ruins. Eh, if we just wander around, we'll get there sooner or later.
It seems we have no choice in the matter. Best to get it over with.
I put a new plant there. What do you think? Livens up the room, doesn't it? They say plants grow better if you talk to them. Give it a try, Naoya.

The plant in question is the Agastya Tree in the back, one of the many save points that are at our disposal. With the events of the day saved, Naoya and the gang will have to wait until the next update to start exploring.

First off, thanks to everybody to checking it out and commenting! Big thanks to Alpha3KV and ItemGetter for pointing out the link issue, I must've double-checked everything except the videos. Fixed now.

Junpei posted:

Oh, sweet! This is cool! I've never actually PLAYED the original, but I do know the plot of this one. Question:

SEBEC or Snow Queen? Or will you do both?

Yep, I'll be showing off both routes including their bad endings. Don't know if I'm masochistic enough to do a Thanatos SQQ run, we'll have to wait and see.

Item Getter posted:

Nice, I love the original Persona and wanted to revisit it in some way before P5, but didn't want to endure the jankiness of the actual gameplay again.

I miss Philemon a bit in the new games even though Igor serves the same story role in P3-4. But the "Persona game" from this intro is one of the weirder ideas in Persona 1 that was abandoned in later games (I think briefly mentioned also in P2). I'm not sure where they were going with it really.

Speaking of that video, it's OK to post the original PS1 version of it right? Because the campy voice acting and CG is really a treasure that needs to be seen.

Or to talk about the American PS1 versions of stuff we've seen already in the LP in general.

Yeah, the Persona game was a point in P2 as well. They probably went with it because it's the easiest way to have teenagers attempt the supernatural, just like American media often has teens trying out stuff like Ouija boards.

And yes, posting about the (amazing) PS1 and localized version is a-okay! I'll most likely be doing a big post or two about them near the end, for archival purposes. For anybody wanting a little taste, somebody uploaded the PS1 Philemon video so I don't have to:

FrankZP posted:

Oh dang, I'm on board. I'm super curious about the Persona series for being part of or connected to SMT in general, but I basically don't know anything about any of it, and this is looking like an excellent entry point. Thanks for doing this.

(Unrelated but hello, I enjoyed your Nocturne LP!) Doc Morbid is right that in terms of current Persona themes and gameplay, Persona 1/2 have only the very basics compared to Persona 3-5 (I'll probably nerd out about Persona themes at some point as well). But it's always interesting to see where a series started and I enjoy P1 on its own merits (plus then you can feel like a dweeb when you recognize call-backs later in the series).

Mraagvpeine posted:

It's fascinating to see the beginning of the Persona series, although I've heard that SMT If... is the basis for the series so I'm not sure which is the start of it.

The director, Katsura Hashino, has basically said as much that if... is a Persona precursor, as the positive reception from the game's high-school setting inspired them to then work on a game that dealt with young adults' struggles. In terms of gameplay, the game's Guardian system is sorta like a proto-Persona system. Somebody did a LP of if..., so you should check it out if you're interested.

Update 2 - After-school activities

School Days
Educational Institution (Dungeon - After School)

Stepping out of the nurse's room brings us to our first 3D dungeon - St. Hermelin High. You can strafe with the L and R buttons, allowing Naoya to crab-run around campus (obviously the most effective form of transportation a human can use). We won't be heading to the hospital just yet, as the school and city have plenty to see and plenty of people to talk to.

First stop on the first floor in the school's courtyard.

It's been part of my daily routine, ever since I was a girl......Praying to the guardian deity that everyone grows up into fine adults.

Our principal's a cool lady... but she can be a little too lovey-dovey.

>It's made of thamatite and possesses an abnormal magnetism. Legend has it that a heavenly being known as Hiremon dropped it from the sky to be Mikage-cho's guardian stone.
This megalith shard...It's a very precious cultural artifact. Who built it? For what purpose? It never ceases to fascinate me.

Near the courtyard in the teacher's lounge, with only one teacher to be found. The teacher informs us that someone keeps coming in and out of the open room on the second floor before accusing Naoya of being the one doing the deed. How rude.

Man, Hidehiko sure works fast at times like these.
I told Ms. Saeko about what happened. Brown seems to have already gone home... And I don't think Ayase could explain it coherently, do you?

In Ayase's defense, how "coherently" can one explain lightning striking down four of your friends in the middle of a classroom? Other students on the first floor are talking about supernatural phenomena on their own.

Rumor-loving girl: Some people have heard moaning and seen red eyes peering through windows... It's supposed to be cursed since they leveled the haunted mansion to built it.
The haunted mansion! Man, that takes me back. I used to go play there a lot and that old bat-- I mean my mom, got mad at me.
Yeah, they tore that place down and put up the SEBEC building last year.

Why's everyone so pissed at SEBEC? It's just a regular company.

The first floor of Hermelin is larger than the others thanks to a passageway that leads to the gym and club rooms. Unfortunately, there's a particularly loathsome person standing watch at the moment.

If you want to get outside, the school gates are there for a reason! Our school's swarming with degenerates like you! Ooishi is far too lenient!
Now get outta here! I'm going to call a specialist and have this blocked off!

Urgh, it's Hamya. I hate that guy...Cheese it, Naoya!
Tch... Isn't there one decent teacher here besides Ms. Saeko and the principal?

There's even more rumors being spread around in the gym.

Rumor-loving boy: It's SEBEC's doing, if you ask me! Huh? Proof...? It's just male intuition!

Directly next to the gym are the club rooms, though only two are of interest for us - the drama club and the fencing club.

Drama club member: I heard there was a traditional play we used to perform... Why not do that? I think it was called The Snow--
Drama club president: Absolutely not! That one's off limits. I'll decide soon...Give me some time.
Snow...? Was he going to suggest The Snow Queen?

And further down the hall...

Tamaki is the female player character from the SNES game Shin Megami Tensei if..., which takes place in the same universe as Persona 1 and 2.

Tadashi, on the other hand, is based off of real-life Atlus employee Satomi Tadashi, who was the scenario writer for Persona 1 and 2.

Sheesh, Tamaki, who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?

What did you say!? I'm gonna rip this trash off the walls right now!
Hey! What're you doing to my goddess!?
"Goddess" my rear end, you pervert! You're the perviest pervert to ever perv!
Arrrgh! You hag! You're a haggity hag who hags all hagging day!

I'll just leave you two alone and head upstairs.

All of the stairs in Persona have the same exact landing and layout. Perhaps Mikage-cho had some kind of executive order?

Serious student: Places like that only attract hooligans--
Haha! "Hooligans"? Seriously? What a poindexter!
Serious student: Won't you pipe it down!? As I was saying, wouldn't it attract hooligans? I'd certainly hate to see that happen.

Um, I hate to ask, but...Could you tell Maki I'll give back that book next time I go visit her...?

U-Um, thanks. I'm sorry to ask you to go out of your way like that...It was a really good book, so I wanted to read it again before I return it...
That good, huh? What's it called?
U-Um, "Gate to Paradise"...
Whoa, that's deep! I didn't know Maki was into that kinda thing...
If you enjoyed it that much, why not simply buy your own copy?
W-Well... It's kind of expensive...and my brothers and sisters need new clothes.
Nanjo, you moron! Don't you know she works part-time to help her family out?
Alright, well, we gotta get goin', but we'll be sure to pass on your message!

Apart from classrooms, the second floor is also home to the cafeteria.

Was it a vision? Is there really a girl waiting for me to rescue her? W-Wow... that's awesome...

"Toro" is the word for fatty tuna; the PS1 localization dropped all pretenses and just nicknamed him "Chunky."

Well-informed student: Dude, guess what I saw! Toro asked out Ayase and got rejected on the spot! I hear he's still following her around, though.
Toro's got balls, man! I mean, asking out Ayase!? Dude... I wouldn't go after her in a million years!

Female student 1: He obviously ran off with his girlfriend! C'mon, it's been two months already!
Female student 2: That's a lie! That Chisato bitch tricked him! Everyone knows that girl's bad news!
I was surprised too when Chisato started dating Yosuke. It was so sudden... Chisato never acted like she cared about him before. Actually, I always thought Ma-- Hey, shouldn't we get going?
It's true that not even I think Chisato has an especially attractive personality. It seemed as if she was dating Yosuke to show off as much as anything.
Yosuke's handsome and a nice guy. I hate to admit it, but he's hard to beat!

There's also the second floor's empty classroom. Time to check it out and hopefully clear Naoya's name.

Rage (Reiji's Theme)

Huh? Reiji? You're Reiji Kido! What're you doin' here?
...

Without a word, Reiji steps aside and leaves the room.

Hmph. The standoffish sort, I see.
Look who's talking... What a gloomy Gus! But hey, for all we know... Maybe he's the kinda guy who secretly practices magic tricks at home.
Reiji transferred here soon after the SEBEC Building was constructed...

With that mystery cleared, we all head up to the third and final floor.

Eeeheehee... I'm investigating the seven mysteries of St. Hermelin High. Want to know what I've learned? Eeheehee...maybe some other time...

Well, Tsutomu, I maaaaay have some new mysteries you might wanna check out. Not everyone is so accepting of Devil Boy, though.

Those two over there are making fun of Devil-Boy... But I prefer Devil-Boy to them. At least he doesn't act all high and mighty.

Male student: I know much more about the occult. Though, I could never tell the uninitiated.
Library committee member: You see that guy over there? The one they call Devil-Boy? He tripped and fell over again today during PE. It was frickin' hilarious! He can't even do a single push-up! What a lamer!

There's also the student council room, where we can check on how Hermelin's politics are going.

Student council president: Kandori would have refused to do it as a point of pride... So I refuse too! It's all part of my quest to be more like him!

Student council member: Huh? You haven't heard of that bigshot at SEBEC? He graduated from here... He's still young, but he's branch president of a big company now.

Last up is the art room.

Might've heard a bit about them at this point.

Art club member: Well, Maki's pieces are incredible. She's won several awards for them. Her friend Chisato isn't very good, but she's had better luck with men.
The painting I saw of Maki's had a strong, raw sense of emotion to it.
I've seen one of Maki's paintings. She won an award for her "Gate to Paradise."

That's all the school provides us for now, so the group heads out to the entrance hall.

There's a reason it's said that one's youth passes quickly.
That Nanjo pisses me off so bad... I'll find a chink in his armor someday.
Masao and Kei are both such children.

The four step outside.

Smile
Number 1 (Nanjo's Theme)

Y...Yamaoka...!
Oh, my! Master Kei is leaving the premises with a crowd of friends! I'm...I'm so happy to see this...!
Master...Kei?
Y-Yamaoka! I've told you time and again never to call me that! You dummy!

N-No, I, ah... Oh, be silent, Masao! Look, Yamaoka, I don't need a ride today! Just...go back without me!
Oh, my! Will you be going out on the town with your chums, young master?
I'm only going to the hospital! And stop calling me that!
The hospital!? Heavens! I do hope you haven't hurt yourself, young master!

Even stone-faced Yukino can't keep it together.

Enough! Let's be on our way, Naoya! Yamaoka... do NOT follow us!

Nanjo storms off in a huff and into Mikage-cho, which we'll explore next time and finally get around to seeing Maki.

The HUD map doesn't do that, but the full-screen map you can pull up will only show you places you have been. (Edit: never mind looks like it may have been changed on the PSP)
It's rather handy since the dungeons in this game are full of dead ends and you can sometimes avoid them by looking at the map.
By the way, did they upgrade the PSP version so you can switch floors in the full screen map? It would alleviate a problem with some of the more annoying dungeons.

Yep, you can now switch between floors and the PSP mini-map shows where you've already been.

Update 3 - Hospital check-up

School Days
City 1 - Tranquility

The rest of the group follows after Nanjo onto the city map. The PSP version's map is a welcome respite from the PS1 original's, though I do admit that actually walking around town and having to wait on street lights to change was pretty fun. Pressing the Square button will bring up the names of all the buildings on the screen. First stop is the Kaneda Mansion on the left.

What nonsense! To my eyes, this old woman's so-called "treasure" is little more than rubbish. She purports to be an antique collector...
But she'll buy anything that's priced high enough. What could be more absurd?
That old biddy treats everyone like a thief. Just ignore her.
Can we leave yet, Naoya? I'm sick of taking her crap!
Hmph! Children like you can't grasp my treasure's true worth! Now get out of my sight!

On the other side of the spectrum is the Himeno Residence to the right.

Well, yeah, anyplace would look small next to yours! Tch, this is why I can't stand rich dudes like you...
I think this is where Yuko Himeno lives. You know, Maki's friend. I work part-time for myself, but she's doing it for her family...
Man... talk about a sob story! Yo, Nanjo, why don't you work part-time to pay Yamaoka's salary yourself!?

And related to working part-time is the Yin&Yan convenience store up top.

Something's come up, so I'll be in late. I'll work overtime to make it up.
Oh, okay. You're a real go-getter, y'know that? I guess you have a reason to work.
Yukino really does have a part-time job? Uh... why?
I want to study photography abroad, so I gotta save up.
I can't fathom Yukino wearing that uniform and smiling at customers.

Heading over a screen gets us to Mikage Sun Mall, loaded with shops to peruse. The group steps into the clothing store, Rosa Candida.

The woman browsing the back rack catches Mark's attention, and she turns around when she notices everybody.

Oh, crap! It's my mom!

Mark's mother: I'm doing some shopping, but the load's piling up. Help me out, Massie!
Hmmmm... This "Massie" is you, is it, Masao Inaba...?
Q-Quit it, you old bat! I'm busy! Leave me alone!
Mark's mother: Massie! You'd call your own mother an old bat!? And just when I was thinking of buying you some t-shirts!

Well, Mark's already got a pretty nice t-shirt: it has a print of the protagonist from Devil Summoner on it.

"Massie"? That's about as embarrassing as "young master."
No one asked you, Yukino!
Mark's mother: Oh, are these your friends? My, this store is expensive. Look at this one, Massie!
What do I want with that!? C'mon, Naoya, let's go!

Mark escapes from the store without turning to see if anybody's following.

Yes, ma'am.

Another place of interest is the Historical Society, which the group stops at for a quick look. The hottest display is the Expel Mirror in the middle of the room.

Girl: My teacher said it's boring in those ruins 'cause there's nothing else there.
It's musty in here, but kinda nice. Maybe it's the mirror's influence.
It's long been said that mirrors have mystical powers... Is this one of them?
You're awfully studious all of a sudden. Is Hell about to freeze over?

Located in another ward is the shopping district Joy Street.

Reiji's mother: His name's Reiji Kido. Do you know him?
Yeah
Reiji's mother: Oh, so you know him? Ah, you're in the same class? I see... Then you must know my son isn't very outgoing... It may be selfish of me to ask this, but could you make friends with Reiji?
Sure
Reiji's mother: Ah, truly? Thank you! Please feel free to come visit him at home sometime!

After setting a playdate with Reiji, the other place of interest on Joy Street is the casino, Judgement 1999.

Blonde man: Dude supposedly has a scar on his head. He shouldn't mess with the Tailors!
Just ignore those guys. They'll get bored and wander off before too long.

Tailors...? I don't know about your naming sense, Mark.

Now then, with everybody getting all excited about SEBEC, shouldn't we go check it out as well? How interesting could a company called Saeki Electronics & Biological & Energy Corporation be?

This ain't a playground for brats like you. Hey, toss these kids out!

Takeda? What's this disturbance about?

Strange Atmosphere
Stillness Before (Theme of Kandori - Silence)

Kandori...
My, what a rare pleasure. What business does the scion of the Nanjo family have with us?

I didn't come here for you. I'm only tagging along with these people.
Aha... Then these must be the young master's school friends. You accompanied them to a sordid place like this? Quite a friendship indeed...
Cease calling me "young master." I never gave you permission to use that name.
You little--!
Stand down, Takeda. It seems the Nanjo family lacks discipline... Well, I'll allow it. But Nanjo... I will teach you the proper form of address to your betters.

Tch... It's almost time, Mr. Kandori.
Yes, I'll be right there. Now then, the time has come for me to ask you all to leave.
Heh! Let's go, Naoya.

There's one last location we need to stop at before heading to the hospital: the abandoned factory. It acts as the base for Mark's Tailors group.

Hm...? Masao, is he one of your "crew" as well?
Say what!? Huh...? So you're the dude with the scar on his head... What're you doin' here?

Oh hey, it's Reiji. This saves me the trouble of having to go all the way to your house. Wanna hang?

I mean, you could've just said "no"... Like before, Reiji walks off without saying anything.

Now then! With the city and school explored, the group heads into Mikage Hospital.

A Girl At the Window (Dungeon - Hospital)

Best not be idle, after all.
Heh... Cold, man. By the way, Maki's in Room 302.

The other three pause and stare at Mark.

You're pretty well-informed, Masao.
Uh... Shut up! A friend of mine told me! Yo, Naoya, let's just go already.

Most of the doors are closed - it wouldn't do to run into somebody's hospital room, after all - but we can still get into the nurse's stations on 2F and 3F.

Uh...
Nurse: You visited her last week too didn't you? And the week before...
Is that so...? You're unexpectedly nice to her, I see.
Leave him alone, Nanjo.

Nurse: You know she's been in and out of the hospital since she was a child, right? I always worried about her keeping up her friendships...

Nurse: Her only daughter is in the hospital and she hasn't visited even once! I don't care how busy she is at SEBEC! She's a failure as a mother! Poor Maki...
Why is Maki's mother working at THAT company, of all places!?
Oh, crap! Y'think I should've brought flowers or something? Well, too late now!

Too late indeed - the party heads to Room 302 to see Maki. Luckily Maki is the only one whose plate outside the door is yellow, making her even easier to spot.

True to his word, the doctor and nurse take their leave and leave the group alone with Maki.

You're so thoughtful, Masao.
What do you mean?
I told Masao I wanted to see everyone when he was here last time...Isn't that why you all came?

"Gate to Paradise," I think it was.
Ah... That's okay. I've read it so many times, I practically have it memorized.
Alright, I'll tell her next time I see her. So how've you been? You doing okay?
Uh-huh. I'm doing much better. I wonder if it's because of that good dream... It's hard to remember, but I keep dreaming of a really nice man... He's like a father...
Like that doctor? He seemed nice.

Did he do somethin' to you!?
No, that's not it... I just...don't like doctors...
Well, let's talk about other stuff, then. Hey, how about your mom? How's she doin' at SEBEC?
She's not my mom! She cares more about her job than me! She doesn't care about me at all...
S-Sorry...

This isn't good! Call a doctor!

:siren: Scene - Hospital Disappearance :siren:

The group stands outside the ICU, waiting to hear any news.

I do hope it's nothing serious.

...Dammit...

Mark casts his head down, looking even more dejected than everybody else. After he speaks, a rumbling begins to start in the building.

Hm? An earthquake?

The benches shake and the plaques rattle around before falling to the ground. Mark jumps out of the way as one crashes on the floor.

Whoa, it's a big one!
The hell!? Hold on!

It seems to have subsided.

Mark rushes towards the ICU door, ready to yank it open.

Maki!

Whoa! Wh-What the hell!? Where'd the room go?

What...How is that...? No, I was positive that was the ICU a moment ago!

As the group continues to stare in wonder, a woman's scream erupts from down the hallway.

That scream...It came from downstairs! Let's go!

Wh-What's with these guys?
Panicked nurse: Th-The dead patients suddenly got up and walked...That old man rescued me and...Nooooo!

Unable to take it anymore, the nurse bolts from the room in terror.

How the hell are we supposed to fight somethin' that's already dead!?

Naoya awakens to his Persona, Seimen Kongou. A Rakshasa in Hindu lore and a protector deity in Buddhist lore, he once spread disease and suffering but dedicated himself to now ridding the world of such ills.

Mark's Persona is Ogun, who is known by many names across different religions. He is most well-known as a warrior god and a spirit of metal work.

Yukino's Persona is Vesta, the Roman goddess of hearth, home, and family who is one of the twelve of the most honored gods in the Roman pantheon.

Lastly, Nanjo's Persona is Aizen Myouou, one of the five Wisdom Kings who is known to transform worldly lust into spiritual awakening.

No! No no no! I won't let you leave me! Hang in there, Yamaoka!
It's time I said farewell... Just one last thing... Please promise me, young master... Promise to become the No. 1 man in the country and carry Japan on your back! *cough* *cough*
...Of course... Of course I will. When that time comes, you'll see.

That's my young master... I will always be... in your heart...

It said it would lend us power, so I kinda doubt it's hostile. If we're lucky, maybe it'll listen to what we tell it...I guess we might as well go on calling it "Persona."
That's how it felt to me, too...I have a bad feeling about this. Let's go.

The Persona awakening music is highly recommended and one of the worst exclusions from the PSP soundtrack. Though I didn't realize until now Kandori's theme didn't make the cut either.

Cool , I never knew about those two enterable houses before, mostly since they aren't labeled on the PS1 map and the map in that version is such a chore to deal with. Likewise, probably for the same reason, I never saw that scene at SEBEC until I picked up the game again after this LP started.

Yeah, like I mentioned in the OP, the PSP version did a bit of cutting when it came to music - the PSP soundtrack has 67 tracks as opposed to the PS1 version's 109. Luckily the dungeon themes tend more towards remixes rather than entirely new tracks.

Your comment also reminded me - how much extraneous dialogue were any of you interested in?

GoneRampant posted:

Well, consider me another member of the Persona fanbase who's never played this or either of the P2 games. I have a PSTV so I can buy this if I want it, which I may do if the LP makes it look worth my time.

Whether or not you go through playing the game depends a lot on your appreciation of (or perhaps tolerance for) old 90s RPG dungeons and turn-based battles with a slight twist. I still really love the game, but I have a high tolerance for dungeon crawling.

Update 4 - PERSONA!

Last time our heroes awakened to their Persona, but it wasn't enough to save Nanjo's beloved Yamaoka.

Without you, I'm all alone... No one is here to encourage me... No one...will stand by me...
Nanjo seemed like a little boy in front of that old guy... Failing to protect the ones you love... Nothing hurts worse than that.
I didn't think he was gonna cry... He must've really loved that old guy.

Mad Hospital
Dungeon - Hospital (After Disaster)

The post-disaster hospital is our first real dungeon of the game, with demons crawling all over the place. The mini-map has been improved from the PS1 version, as it now shows us where we've been before highlighted in yellow.

Bringing up the full map shows us both where we've been (and which way we've been going) and a small part of where we can head to. You can now also cycle through different floors.

There are a few stragglers left behind besides us.

Doctor: Dammit, why can't I get to the ICU!? There's a patient in there! I have to treat the Sonomura girl...!
Nurse: The TV's not working, and the phone's dead too! What in the world is going on!?

Hopefully they won't mind if we just borrow some of this medicine. Not like they'll be needing it, right?

A Lone Prayer
Common Battle

Taking a few steps lands us into our first battle of the game, so I'll go over the battle system which which is likely the reason that many people just kinda stop playing it.

The first thing to notice is that despite being a turn-based RPG, Persona's battle screen takes place on a grid. Both weapons and spells have a specific range they will hit, and you can set where each character stands. You can change where your characters are during battle, but it takes up a whole turn and so strategically won't be used much or at all.

Persona 1 also has a whole boatload of spell and attack types that didn't make it into most of the newer Persona games, such as Miracle, Gravity, Nuclear (back for P5!), Blessing, Prayer, Occult, Tech, Rush, and Special. You don't really have to worry about knowing the names of skills for this reading, as I'll be sure to mention names and effects when needed.

Here's another irritating quirk of the battle system: EXP is entirely based on who acted during battle. While every other Persona game (and most RPGs) evenly distribute EXP at the end of battle, this game has it so that EXP matches up to how much a character did during battle, seemingly dependent on how much damage they did and if they hit an enemy's weakness. This leads to situations where slower characters who can't act before a battle ends earn less EXP and don't level, so players must then make their fast characters guard to allow slower characters to act. In the end it's just a lot of unneeded micromanagement that I'm surprised they didn't change in the PSP remake.

Every level-up nets you 3 points you can place in any of the 5 stats, letting you customize Naoya's build.

So, for Persona themselves, Persona don't become stronger by leveling up but rather by ranking up. When a Persona is used in battle enough, they will earn a new rank (up to the max, 8), which raises their stats and sometimes bestows a new skill to them. Here Seimen Kongou has learned Delyte, a move which inflicts the Blind ailment and will prevent the affected from taking any action.

Persona are sort of like a second set of equipment, as they will influence the stats and resistances of the character they're used by. Every Persona is associated with a specific arcana, and each character has an arcana affinity which determines which arcana they are Best, Good, Bad, or Worst with. Characters can only use Persona with arcana they are Best or Good with.

Of course, your party isn't stuck with their initial Persona. To create new Persona, the first step is to collect spell cards from the various demons you meet by striking up a conversation with them. Each character has four different actions they can take during conversation, which will direct the flow of conversation.

Of course, we all know Mark's "Dance" option is the best one:

Demons will react to a character's actions in one of four different ways: Anger (red), Happy (orange), Eager (yellow), or Scared (blue). Which one you want depends on what you want from the demons, and you can even combine emotions for other effects (i.e. Eager + Happy will get you a gift and a chance at negotiation).

Getting a demon angry will just piss them off, either making their power increase or binding the character who contacted them.

Scaring a demon will either bind them, make them give you a gift, or simply make them run away from battle. This one is good if you need certain demons to leave the battlefield.

Making a demon happy will inflict the Happy status ailment, which causes them to sometimes not act during their turn. They may also choose to give you gifts.

Lastly, making them eager allows you to strike up a deal with them. You can ask them to leave or ask them for a gift, but the main thing you'll be using this for is getting spell cards.

Spell cards are the only way to get new Persona, so it's in your best interest to take some time during dungeons to get a few (though you can only hold 12 at a time). Apart from using them to make new Persona, having a demon's spell card means that any time you talk to them in another battle they will leave and sometimes give you a gift.

Those are the basics of battle which will take you through the rest of the game. More specifics such as status ailments, buffs/debuffs, etc. will be brought up when needed. The party continues through the hospital.

I'm worried about Maki too, but let's get to the streets. I have a bad feeling...
I can still feel Maki here... Hang on, Maki. We'll find you.

>You can sense Maki's pain just by looking at it...

I always thought you were a pushover, Naoya... I'm surprised how calm you are.
I wonder if there are other patients besides Maki in trouble right now...

The doctor on the first floor examination room will give you free healing as much as you want, since the only other source of healing is any medicine you found as well as Yukino's Dia spell.

Agaysta Tree
Augustia's Wood

The last stop before leaving is the Agaysta Tree, whose PS1 theme sounds almost downright devious. This full-grown version of the plant in Dr. Natsumi's office is just one of the several trees spread all throughout Mikage-cho who are more than happy to save your game for you.

Just like always, Reiji leaves without another word.

So even you'll lend a hand to others... Interesting. I wouldn't have thought it.

I don't like this... This isn't how an ordinary company acts.
What could this mean? I heard SEBEC was a Fortuna 500 company... But this may as well be a Mafia front operation.
Hey, doesn't Maki's mom work for SEBEC? What in the world's going on...?

This is a gunshot wound... Who did this to you?
Kandori's... goons...
Kandori!? The president of SEBEC?
The alterations to this town... Kandori's behind them all... I... was involved in the development of a certain device...
A device... And you're saying this machine is causing the changes?

It's engineered to affect reality. But I didn't think it could do this... Kandori said... he doesn't care what happens to this town... I have to hurry and tell the police!
Oh dear... The police station is already overrun with demons. I just came from there.
My God... But Kandori has to be stopped...!
...How did you escape, Ma'am?
Through the abandoned factory... It has a secret freight entrance. Use this security card...

Setsuko falls to the ground again.

Whew... she only passed out. We have to get her to the school, quick!
...You handle this, Naoya. I got business to take care of.

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained..." I'll come with you. Remember, you won't be able to get near Kandori without this card.

Nanjo meets Mark at the door, and the two of them depart back into the city.

H-Hey! ...Tch, thanks, guys. C'mon, let's go back to the school ourselves. Honestly! Men never think about how the ones they leave behind feel.
Those two do have a similarly reckless temperament. Well, I'm sure they'll give up and come back once they see the place.

It's really exciting to see an LP of this game and how things have changed over the years (only played P2ISP)! The grid system seems like a more in depth version of stuff like rows, but it feels like a pain.

Personally, I'm a big fan of NPC dialogue, so I'm all for more of it! :) Though if it stretches out updates too much, maybe put it in LPix at the start of updates or put them as bonus updates?

But if you're planning on doing Persona 2 and its NPC dialogue, go with my prayers... :rip:

Yeah, I think less important fluff dialogue will go in a bonus update, or I could do what Mega64 did in their Mother 3 LP where they had dedicated "town dialogue" sections. Putting them in a separate LP Tester window is a good workaround.

For P2, I'm planning on probably doing an SSLP of IS's PSP remake, since it was also requested in the request thread. If I start transcribing dialogue now, maybe I'll be finished by the time this LP is over!

MythosDragon posted:

There are 3 main reasons I could never get into this game.

1. I strongly dislike the "use any persona" nonsense, especially when the method here in p1 makes no sense. The absolute last thing I'd think was a good idea would be to put the concentrated essense of a demon into my pysche. My enjoyment of 3 and beyond was helped greatly by limiting it to the protag, and if I had it my way I'd still remove that and replace it with some kind of role change system where you can have several skill sets and stat spreads for each role. Canon representations of their pysche are only cool when you can actually use then the entire game.

Also100% of non generic dialogue should be shown, and I know its too late but if you have the confidence for 2, I absolutely adore it when Lpers give a voice to silent protags.

The Persona differences between P1-2 and P3 and beyond was something I said I'd talk about, as conceptually I think it's interesting. I posted about this in the main MegaTen thread, but I may as well post about it in here as well.

In Persona 1, the reason why every character can change their Persona is rooted in the fact that Personas are supposed to represent the varied selves within somebody, and everybody has several different masks they use. People are better at some than others (which is why characters have different arcana compatibilities), but they can still be switched depending on the situation and people involved. These Persona come about as a reaction to life's difficulties (in the game case, fighting with and speaking with demons), and some are more difficult to get than others - sometimes you must work hard and gain enough experience in life (to get higher-level Persona).

With Persona 3, it seems to dismiss that idea and instead runs with the idea that a Persona is a single mask that a person had developed and that this Persona is only a means to an end, that this Persona will eventually be shed for another. Indeed, Jung warns that strong identification with a single persona will inhibit a person, and that those with a strong ego relate to the outside world with a flexible persona. This speaks towards P3's themes of unity and growth of characters, which leads to their awakening. The awakenings also speak to Jung's idea of the regressive restoration of the persona. The character must awaken to a new persona, because if not then they will attempt to keep their social reputation within "the confines of a much more limited personality... pretending that he is as he was before the crucial experience."

There's probably more to say, but overall, both the early Persona titles and later Persona titles play on Jungian psychology in different ways. The decision to have the main character be a wild card while the others keep only one Persona was likely done due to the increased number of avaliable party members, and the switch from Ranks to Levels was also likely done for gameplay reasons, but I think it's interesting to see how they played with the Jungian themes established with the first 2 games. I'm not sure which I prefer, to be honest, as I have fun with both of them. However, it may be very true that the Persona system of P1-2 wouldn't mesh with the gameplay mechanics of P3-5 as the player is not afforded as much time to make Personas.

Moving on from fun psychological stuff! I've never done any sort of voiced protag in my LPs, but I might try it out for P2 (seeing as the protag's got a more canon voice than P1's protag).

PeaceDiner

Item Getter posted:

I'm not sure what you mean about "not having as much time" but I would agree that the P1-2 system wouldn't mesh with P3-5's mechanics. I would more say that Persona 3-5's persona system was designed to work well together with the overarching life-sim concept and its Social Links system, as well as Persona 3-5's variant of the Press Turn battle system. Since the level bonuses from Social Links are an integral part of creating Personas in those games, and they're supposed to represent the protagonist's own relationships it wouldn't make sense if the other characters had access to them as well. The all-out attacks and enemy knockdown features of the battle system would become extremely broken if you could switch all characters' Personas at will P2-style... or if you could give characters the sort of well rounded Personas you can make with the game's adoption of a Nocturne style Persona fusion system with skill inheritance.

When I say "not enough time," I meant how P3-5 are built around a calendar system, plus you may also need certain Persona for Social Links, so trying to juggle having that many Persona would be a lot more difficult. I guess the intermediary between the P1/2 system and P3-5 system would be Persona Q with its Sub-Persona system, which a lot of people felt broke the game (it's been awhile since I played it, and I only played it once).

Update 5 - Uninvited guest

After Mark and Nanjo left the party, Naoya and the rest of the gang continue on back to St. Hermelin High.

Strange Atmosphere
Elly's Theme

We have an injured woman with us. Won't you open the gate?

Ah, yes. "Roses are red, zombies are blue, I don't want brains, so you know I'm true." Now will you let us in?
Boy on watch: Alright, come in!

The school's gates swing open, and Naoya and Yukino carry Setsuko inside.

Daily Life
Ms. Saeko's Theme

You're all safe!? Oh, I'm so glad... Oh! What happened to her!?
We'll tell you later! We need to get her to the infirmary, quick!
You're right! Naoya, come with me to the infirmary! Yukino, Eriko, I want you to head to the passageway to the gym. Yuka and Yuko are there plugging up the hole in the wall. Please help them out!

Yes, let's go!

Yukino and Elly leave the room, heading for the back of the first floor.

Alright, then we should get going, too.

So that's what SEBEC is up to, huh...? I can't believe them! Hey, Naoya? Sorry to ask, but... Could you go by the hole and ask Yukino and the others not to fill it up? Masao and Kei might have to come back in through there.
Maki's mother isn't badly hurt. You can relax.

School Days
Monochrome (Dungeon - School Revisited)

St. Hermelin High is basically the same as last, except for a change in music in the PS1 version and the fact that some previously locked doors are now open. Naoya needs to get to the passageway to talk to Elly and Yukino but, well, they can wait, can't they? He's got to check on the school and see how everybody's doing after the disaster, starting with the principal.

When I think about something happening to one of my students, I worry so much.

And we can kiss our careers goodbye! If this had just happened a little later, all the students would've gone home... Why is my luck so terrible!?

Teacher: Me? I-I can't leave this spot... I have to sort out all the reports I get!

You're lucky he was already on his way around school. You can't accuse somebody of opening and closing doors and then dump work on them like that!

Amidst all the chaos, the rumor-loving students have more confidence than ever.

Rumor-loving girl: I bet the spirits are angry that SEBEC built their HQ on top of it! It must be the ghost of a Sengoku-era general or something!

Short-haired girl: I mean, not a single demon has gotten in here yet, right?
Resting boy: Won't she shut up...? All that crap about guardians and demons... She's dreaming.

However, there are other students who are still a bit preoccupied.

If I prove to Ayase how macho I am... She... she might l-like me... right?
Male student: Something's up with Toro. You can see it in his eyes... Guess he's still hung up on Ayase. His type is scary when they can't let go.

Art club member: Guess it wasn't just the art club, through... the whole school was cursed. Hahaha, what a relief! ...Uh...

Student council president: Hey, if you want to be helpful, run along and solve this disaster, hmm?
Student council member: The other members and I were organizing a safety committee while HE sat back... We never should have elected that jerk!

Female student: It should've just affected SEBEC, but nooo... We had to get dragged in too. Ugh, honestly! What a pain!
Male student: I know there are demons outside, but I'm getting really hungry... Maybe I could duck out for a bite using that secret shortcut... Nah, too scary.

Alright, I guess that's enough playing around. Naoya heads back down to the first floor passageway.

Strange Atmosphere
The Cave Behind the Gym

And it turns out neither of them are even here.

She said she was going to look for something to block up the hole...
Hey, if we block this thing up, is that really gonna make us safe? Huh? We're not blocking it up anymore? Uhh... Is that okay...?

I tried to stop her, but of course she doesn't listen. Talk about trouble... Is there really a passage that leads outside of town?

Alright, then I guess some more exploring wouldn't hurt.

All of the club rooms now have items sitting around in them for the taking, and it's a good chance to show off the rooms I didn't get to in the second update.

The boxing club's room. Perhaps Mark was the one to do up the wall? He does dance pretty crazy, though...

The archery club's room. One of the signs reads "Inside practice is prohibited," but I guess they went ahead and crossed that rule out.

You went outside, right? Is that cueball still running the shop?

"That cueball" refers to his father, who runs the Satomi Tadashi pharmacy.

What's the matter, you scared? Go see for yourself, fraidy cat!
Wh-What the hell... I ain't s-scared of those demons! You're scarier than they are, you muscley freak!
What did you call me, fraidy cat!? Fraidy cat, fraidy cat, fraidy cat!
Argh! Stupid muscley freak! Muscley freak, mussel fr--drat, that's hard to say.

The last room to check is the ballet club's room. Unfortunately, we can't get any tutus as armor.

Now, with all that done and with Elly and Yukino still not back, there's not much else to do except venture outside again ourselves.

Gonna go trash SEBEC, huh?

It's like, impossible. Don't do it!

The sound of the door's latch echoes throughout the yard, and the door opens up to reveal an unexpected guest.

Maki
Maki's Theme - Bright

C'mon, of course it is. Everyone knows good ol' Maki! What's wrong, Yuka?
Woah... Like, something's seriously weird with her, Naoya! There's no way Maki would be that cheerful!

Hey, when did that hole show up? Ohhh, I get it... You made it, didn't you, Naoya?

Why does Naoya keep getting blamed for so much deviant behavior? First the door opening and closing that Reiji was doing and now this. Is he actually some kinda bad boy?

See!? It's totally not like her! I mean, wasn't she in the hospital!?
Yuka! I'm going to get teed off if you keep saying that. Do you WANT me to be hospitalized...?

How can you tell? I bet she's, like, a demon or something!
Oh, um... I'm sorry... But she has Maki's favorite compact...
C'mon, Yuka, quit picking on her! Although... Is something different about you today, Yuko...?

Naoya! What the... Why is Maki here!?
Oh, come on! Don't you start talking nonsense too, Nanjo! What's wrong, anyway? Why are you so bent out of shape?

But if you must know... demons captured that moron Masao at the police station. He mentioned getting weapons, so I went with him, and then... Normally, I'd leave him. Unfortunately, he has the security card... I'll need your help to rescue him.
Demons got Masao!? We need to save him, Naoya!
We were able to procure some guns... Here you are. It seems it can be quite draining to invoke one's Persona. Masao became exhausted after repeated use. That's how they caught him. But forewarned is forearmed. Don't forget to equip these.

With guns in our hands, we can now fully equip our current three party members.

Naoya uses one-handed swords and automatics.

Maki uses bows and handguns - a bit weaker, but her arrows always hit twice.

Nanjo uses two-handed swords and rifles, though currently he's stuck with a mop for a weapon.

Maki is also the character that really drives home how important character placement is during battle. If you don't move her to the back then she'll only be able to hit one or two rows instead of the entire battlefield.

Naoya's interest is piqued, but he doesn't ask any further questions.

U-Umm... Be careful...

The party steps into the void behind St. Heremelin's gym.

...This is hardly the time for jokes.
Excuse you! I wasn't kidding.
It's... a public service that maintains societal order. In this case, it refers specifically to the service's headquarters.
Oh... I think I kinda remember now?

That happened while you were hospitalized. It's been complete for roughly six months... You couldn't have known.
Hahaha, but I was never in the hospital! You're the kidder here, not me.

In her condition, she'll only be a hindrance.
What're you guys whispering about? Let's hurry! Masao might be in trouble!

Confrontation

Looks like we got one already... Well, bring it on!

Maki, don't do anything foolish!

Maki awakens to her Persona, Maso, a Chinese goddess that protects fishermen and sailors from the treacherous sea.

Maki
Maki's Theme - Bright

Persona... the soul's power... It's another me, huh?
It's Latin for "mask." It's the root of the word, "personality."
So there are angels and demons within people's souls? Is that it?
That's a poetic way of putting it, yes. As one fights fire with fire, it seems we'll fight demons with demons. I don't know the reasons for it, but it should certainly prove useful.

Let's root out the source of these demons and get our town back!
Mm... We'll need to rescue the idiot for that. Come, Naoya.

Sounds good to me! Next time: Operation Save Mark.

Taking into account Persona selection and stat spread, who would the current party best be compared to in modern Person games?

I'm guessing that Maki's the Mitsuru (well-rounded casting-based stat spread) and Nanjo's something of an... Makoto (P5 character, Jack of all trades)?

Due to the Persona-switching mechanics, I guess that not every character is a 1:1 in terms of archetype, and many times a person's weakness can be fixed up a bit by the right Persona. Anyway, I guess I'll still talk a bit about them. I'm probably not the best at it, other people can discuss battle tactics if they wish to!

Tactless Ogre's already talked a bit about Maki, who is indeed the resident magic user/healer like Mitsuru or Yukiko.

Nanjo's main draw is his high Vitality stat, so he's a bit of a damage sponge, and he can hit pretty hard with his sword. Aizen Myouou is good for its early game buffs (raising hit rate or magic), though does suffer from a weakness to physical attacks. I guess if I had to compare him to anybody, it'd probably be Akihiko.

Mark is our strong but at times inaccurate powerhouse, who hits hard but doesn't get many critical hits. He can't do much in the way of ranged combat due to his weapons. A Kanji, I guess.

Yukino's another good spellcaster, with weak but accurate weapons that get a fair number of crit hits. Vesta also is fairly versatile, with nuclear, fire, and electric attacks, plus an early-game healing spell. Naoto, maybe?

Elly also fits in the magic user/healer archetype, though her Persona focuses on light magic instead of Maki's ice attacks. Her sword attack focuses more on accuracy than pure power, while her gun attack is both accurate and powerful (plus gets a lot of crit hits). Another Mitsuru, perhaps? (though I am biased since they both use rapiers)

If we're also talking magic, you've got Fire, Ice, Wind, Earth, Electric, Nuclear, Gravity, Blast, Death, Nerve, Occult, Curse, Expel, Prayer, Miracle, and Bless, along with special magic that can do stuff like warp you to a dungeon entrance or null damage floors.

Update 6 - Jail break

With Maki now in tow, the party heads out from school and over to the 3rd ward to the police station.

Strange Atmosphere
Conversation - Generic 1

Er... yes. Masao should be detained in the prison cells, Naoya. But we can't access that section without a key. What to do...?
They might have left it somewhere. Let's see if we can find it.
True. Could you help search, Naoya?

The group splits up in search of the key, with Naoya making a beeline for the top right of the room.

More police stations should label their important key boxes with a big 'ol "KEY."

Masao should be in the prison. I'm loathe to rescue him, but he does have the security card.
Prison... Oh, yes, the prison cells. Yes, that's right, they did have those.

Mikage Police Station
MAJIN...FOREVER (Dungeon - Police Station)

The police station is a very basic dungeon, with only two floors to its name and no gimmicks. There's not much to talk about with it, so I'll take the chance to discuss our current party and their starting Personas.

The player is given complete control of Naoya's stats, so you can build him as you'd like. I'm going for a well-rounded Naoya who specializes in speed and vitality. His Persona Seimen Kongou fights with Wind and Tech moves and mostly deals with strength and agility.

Maki is the requisite mage character who heals and dishes out some nice magic damage. Her Persona Maso specializes in Ice and has a nasty Arrow attack called Rapid Fire that hits a large area 3-5 times.

Though he looks intellectual, Nanjo is actually better at physical attacks. His main draw is that he puts a lot of points into vitality, turning him into a natural damage sponge. His Persona Aizen Myouyou dabbles in Miracle damage as well as buffs.

In almost no time, the party has made it to the prison cells.

Strange Atmosphere
Brown's Theme

You won't get away with this!

We should play nice for now and... Huh?
Hey, there they are! You okay, Masao? ...Huh? Hidehiko's here too!
Hah... A cage suits this monkey.

Wait a sec... Maki?
Hey, it's you guys. Ohhh, I get it... You missed me that much, huh?
Hey, Hidehiko? Why were you gonna play nice with us?
Urgh...
Most likely, he mistook us for someone else. Fortunately, we're on your side. Isn't that good to hear, Hidehiko?

That can wait for later. Let's get them out!

Maki steps up and unlocks both of the cells, letting the two step out.

So I came here looking for some, but I ended up getting caught with Mark!
Shuddup, Hidehiko! Just... shut up! Maki... Why're you here? It must've been a long trip... Are you feelin' okay!?
C'mon, Masao, why're you joking around like that? I'm totally fine!
S-So I see... Okay, then. Anyways--

Confrontation

Look, Baldy, this is goin' too drat far, even for a joke. I haven't done anything!
Wait... something's wrong. Masao, they're--!
Police: Lieutenaaant, this kid broke out of priiison.
Lieutenant: I seeee... Vicious criminals must be execuuuted.
Ugh, that stink... Don't tell me...!

Awakening Legend (Battle - Awakening)

We didn't have a choice! No hard feelings, right, old man?

The demon lieutenant cracks his whip across the ground as the zombies stand at attention.

Huh!? Wh-Wh-What the...!?

Each party member summons their Persona and blasts one of the zombies, until only the lieutenant is left.

Cascades of ice come tumbling down onto Brown.

Brown awakens to the Persona Nemhain, the Irish goddess of havoc and war who can kill 100 men with a single battle cry.

Daily Life
Brown's Theme

You too, eh, Hidehiko? But why him, of all people...?
Alright, lemme explain it to you. Listen up...

Several seconds pass, the screen fading back in from black after Mark's explanation.

Ever since I was a kid... I suspected something was different about me...
I don't think he really gets it... Oh well. Anyways, I'm comin' too, Naoya. I'd be nervous for you guys if you were on your own.
We could say the same about you. You should leave the security card in Naoya's care, Masao.
Alright... Here's the security card, man. Better not lose that thing...
We have a firearm for you, Masao. Just don't shoot us by mistake.

Without me, you fools don't have any star power, y'know? You guys need me to whip you into shape! How about it, Naoya!?
...It's your call, Naoya.

This main route of the game has four optional characters for you to choose from to fill the party's fifth slot. In the original PS1 localization, this is the only way you could play with any of these characters and you could only use one every time you replayed the game. However, with the inclusion of the game's second route, it's possible to use every single character without having to do any replaying. Since we'll get a chance to see Brown later, we'll be skipping over him for right now. Sorry, Brown!

Oh? Is that... Really? You're sure you won't regret it? Alright... Guess I'll head to the school, then. Later, chumps!

Dejected, Brown leaves the rest of the group and heads out.

Hold on tight to that security card. We need it to get into the secret freight entrance at the abandoned factory.
I can't believe ol' Baldy turned into a demon... This is so messed up!

The party backtracks to the front of the police station.

I'm wondering if we should have left those two locked up once we had the card.
Hey, Naoya... Nanjo keeps saying something's wrong with me. You think so?
Baldy better not let the demons overtake the police that easy! Me and Baldy... I mean, that lieutenant, had run-ins before, and it pissed me off... But he really was worried about me. Could that demon have...? Nah, it can't be... There's no way that dude would lay down and die, right?

Before we head to the factory, the construction workers near the subway tell us that a cute girl in the same uniform as us went down into the subway. I can only think of one girl who'd be wandering around...

Daily Life
Elly's Theme

Maki...? When did you get out of the hospital? But then, I suppose now isn't the time for such questions. I'm glad to see you all safe.
So this place is out too, huh?
Yes... I took a look around to be certain, but it's all buried... It seems there really is no way out. How about all of you? Have there been any new developments?
Actually, yeah. It's a long story, but here goes...

Like with Brown, Mark takes the time to tell Elly what's been going down.

I'm sad I wasn't there to witness it... But it sounds like it's only just begun. There should be more chances for me! Won't you take me with you, Naoya? There's so many things I'd love to see. Please, let me come along!

Sorry, Elly, we'll be able to see you again later as well. Bye bye for now!

I'm going to look around town some more. Stay safe, all of you.

Elly leaves in search of new strange phenomena to discover.

There's one place left to go before we head out to SEBEC, and we'll finally be able to put our spell cards to use. The door here was locked before, but we're now free to enter it.

Aria of the Soul
Velvet Room

This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter... It's been quite some time since we last had a guest. This is a room that only those bound by a "contract" may enter... From this day forth, you will be our guest in this Velvet Room. Your destiny will require you to hone your power... And for that, you will inevitably require our help.
The Velvet Room is also known as the room of Personas. A Persona is a side of you that shows itself when you face the world... Think of it as a facade of protection you wear to face hardships in life. Hm... Perhaps that may have been rather difficult to understand...
To battle opponents that cannot be dealt with by human strength alone... We in this room will lend you inhuman power... The power of demons... Now then. Allow me to explain my role here...

Igor goes on to explain how the spell cards we've gathered can be used to make new Personas, as I explained back a few updates. Though they aren't named, there's two more residents of the Velvet Room - the piano player, Nameless, and the singer, Belladonna.

Now, there are two ways to go about fusing spell cards to create new Personas - manual and guided.

Manual fusion is how it's done in most regular MegaTen and Persona games - you pick one fusion material and then another in order to create Personas.

Guided fusion does the reverse - you pick the desired Persona and then see which fusion materials can be used to create the Persona. Its first appearance was in Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, and some newer games like Shin Megami Tensei IV and the Devil Survivor series use it.

Fusions are calculated using Orders and Tribes. Every demon in the game belongs to a certain Tribe, such as Fairy or Beast, and every Persona also belongs to a certain Order, such as Magician or Strength. The Order of a resulting Persona is dependent upon the demons' Tribes - for example, Night x Fairy = Magician.

The arrows and other icons next to a demon refer to whether a fusion can take place between two demons and whether a skill will be inherited by the resulting Persona. An X means fusion is not possible, a circle means fusion is possible but no skill inheritance will take place, a forward-facing arrow means the Persona will inherit a skill from the first demon, an up-facing arrow means the Persona will inherit a skill from the second demon and receive +1 to all stats, and a down-facing arrow means the Persona will inherit a skill from the second demon and receive -1 to all stats

In addition to regular White Fusions (seen in the above screenshots), there's also Red Fusions and Blue Fusions. Red Fusions indicate that there's a higher chance for a fusion accident while a Blue Fusion indicates that the resulting Persona will receive +5 to its highest stat and +20 to Magic Def. Fusion accidents usually mean that the resulting Persona will be of a different Order with either increased or decreased stats and a chance to randomly inherit a skill... but fusion accidents are also the only way to get demons of a special Order, which I'll explore more in detail later.

For now I've fused three new Personas. First is Phaleg, an Olympian spirit who rules over Mars. Along with an attack-lowering spell (Tarunda), he also has an all-target medium heal spell (Mediarama). Phaleg is also super-helpful because of the fact that he nulls all elemental attacks.

Next is Shouki, a Chinese god who can command ghosts and spirits. He's got both an attack- and defense-lowering spell (Tarunda and Rakunda), as well a handy spell that wards off low-level encounters (Estoma).

Last is Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec god of wind. He's got a nice mix of Fire, Nuclear, and Blast skills, which our party was missing.

Persona Fusion
Velvet Room - Coalescence

As for the fusion process itself, Igor gets on his cellphone...

And calls up some curtain. Underneath the two demons are subjected to some violent force as the screen shakes.

Finally, the curtain is lifted and a gigantic card is unveiled.

You can also take on your newly-created Personas in the Velvet Room. Each character can carry up to three Personas with them.

Next time we'll get around to using our new Personas as we storm SEBEC!

The thing is, I'm actually only kinda okay at video games and am mostly doing this LP to show off the story, so my explanations of strategy and the like will be short or non-existent. Therefore, anybody is welcome to talk about things I didn't talk about when it comes to gameplay.

Update 7 - Field trip

For everybody who wants to see the extra dialogue that Persona offers (and those who don't), I've sectioned the dialogue into a little section I call "Talkin' Around Town." When you see the banner below, it means that the dialogue is not story-related at all and can be safely ignored if you so wish. When you see the banner again, it means the section has ended.

Last time we visited Igor and company at his location in Mikage Sun Mall, so let's check out what else is going on around here, starting with the clothing store Rosa Candida.

You're hiding around here someplace, right? It's me, Masao, I'm not a demon. It's safe... You can come out... We'll take you home. Mom...?

Mark continues to make his way around the store, checking every nook and cranny before returning to the front of the store.

The old bat must've gone home before it all went down. I bet she's bawlin' over her "stories" on TV as we speak. C'mon, let's go!

Satomi Tadashi's Pharmacy's Theme 2009
Satomi Tadashi's Drugstore Song

Next is the pharmacy, Satomi Tadashi. The store is famous for its catchy jingle, which has been known to constantly get stuck in Nanjo's head. The song describes the store's products and what their effects are, and you can check out the lyrics here. This store sells most all medicine that can be found in the game.

Hey, have you seen Tamaki? I'm really worried about her... My son, on the other hand, can take a running jump! Hm...? Oh, right, medicine. Coming right up!
The owner here really knows how to sell his product.
There's too much I gotta say to Kandori. I'm not lettin' that guy off easy.
A well-prepared man fears nothing! ...That's what Yamaoka always said.

Sennen-Mannen Hall

Right nearby is Sennen Mannen-Do. They sell both medicinal and non-medicinal expendable items for our party to use.

That clerk seems to be suspicious of us. But ARE we really still human now that we have this power? What do you think?
I wish I could be as laid back as you, Naoya.

Casino

The last place to stop at in the mall is the casino, Judgement 1999. They offer a variety of games to play, but truthfully I'm really not that good at them. If you can score big, the prizes include some nice equipment as well as items that will greatly help for fusing killer Personas, but we don't need them at the moment. Anyway, when we walk in we're immediately accosted by a man.

Flirtatious man: That girl Elly isn't with you? Aww, I was gonna show her how tough I am. Well, that was a bust. But she'll need someone to protect her sooner or later. I'll just keep trying until then!
Huh... Elly's pretty popular.
What a feeble mind you possess. Though I'm actually rather jealous that you can be so calm in this situation.

The other place of interest are the stores in the second ward's Joy Street. There's some of the same stores, including Sennen Mannen-Do:

Is it okay, these stores bein' open? I ain't responsible if they get messed up by demons!
We're going to the abandoned factory, right? Um... what is SEBEC? Is it a company? I don't remember there being anything like that...
Don't you think there's something strange about Maki? Hmmm...

As well as Judgement 1999:

Blonde man: And Mark ain't gonna be around, neither. I gotta say, I'm scared.
Dude, don't go freakin' out over somethin' like this. I'm leavin' the Tailors in your hands while I'm gone, y'know. I feel sorry for the rest of the Tailors crew, but I got places to be.
Is there a deeper plan underlying your actions, or...? I'm completely unable to fathom your motivations for being here.
I've never really been to a place like this. Huh... it's pretty fun!

One of the stores that Joy Street has that the mall doesn't is the convenience store Yin&Yan.

Customer 1: Why wouldn't they have weapons, too!? Don't you agree? Yes! Exactly! Shouldn't this store be serving its customers' needs!?
Customer 2: Are these stores good for anything!? Isn't it odd they don't have weapons? Yeah! You tell 'em! A store's gotta serve its customers' needs!
Huh? They don't have weapons here? That's weird.
Is this the place Yukino works part-time? Oh, wait, that was another store.

The party is ready to storm the factory! But since we have guns now as well, maybe we can try and get in through the front?

What's he acting all superior about!? It really makes me mad! C'mon, guys, let's go! Pbbbbt!

Same.

Alright, then it's through the secret entrance for us.

Strange Atmosphere
Mark's Theme

(If you notice, Mark's PS1 theme was the basis for the PSP theme "Appearance!")

Hey, didn't Masao say he drew this? It's really good! He's pretty talented.
Hold on a moment. You... came here often, yes?

Hell yeah! This place is like a studio for my buds in the Tailors.
So you used this place as a hideout... and never noticed SEBEC's involvement?

That's "under your nose," you dunce!
Ahahaha! C'mon, that's enough... Let's find the entrance.

The party finally notices the presence lurking in the shadows.

Appearance!
Ayase's Theme

Ayase swiftly moves from her hiding place and to the front of the group.

Is that you, Ayase? What on earth are you doing here? It's rather unusual to see you alone.
Hey! I, like, barely got out alive! Can you be a little nicer to me?
Got out alive...? Yuka, did something happen at St. Hermelin!?
Oh man, it's like, awful. That stuff about the school being safe was bogus. St. Hermelin's just, like... gone.
No way! Then what happened to Yuko and everyone? Did you run away by yourself!?
How should I know!? Like I have any idea what's going on...

Calm down, Maki. The school most likely vanished due to the Deva System's effects. In which case, our best course of action is to make Kandori undo it.
I'm coming with you! If I stay here alone, I'll be totally hosed.
Ayase, huh...? What's the word? Are we gonna bring her along?

Unfortunately for Ayase, she won't be our companion this time around either. If you hadn't fulfilled the steps to get the fourth optional party member and you rejected both Brown and Elly, you'd be forced to bring Ayase along for the ride at this point.

Well, fine, assholes!! Go to hell!

Ayase takes one last look at the group before storming off in a huff. Well, she should be fine.

Daily Life
Generic BGM-A

Now, there must be a machine nearby where we can use the security card. I suggest we split up and look for it.

Once again the party splits up to find something important, and once again it's up to Naoya to actually find it. I don't know why their first instinct is to look at Mark's graffiti instead of the highly suspicious set of stairs to the right.

Heheheh, I bombed this wall myself. That's what graf writin' is about... Lettin' your soul shout loud and proud.
Something's off about this town and the people in it... Huh? Wh-What? I don't think the machine is over here...
Kandori... I sensed he was a crafty one when I met him at a business party... But I didn't imagine he could be this audacious.

Strange Atmosphere
Mark's Theme

Huh! Man, so that's where it was!

Naoya found the machine we're supposed to use the card on. C'mon, let's give it a try.
Wait. We don't know what will happen. Let's think this through--
Man, whatever. C'mon, fork it over.

Mark snatches the card from Naoya's hands and swipes it. Mere seconds later, the room begins to shake as the lights flicker on and off.

Huuuuh?
I told you to wait!
Wh-What's going on? Something happened to the lights...

Masao! Are you TRYING to kill me!?
Hahahaha, sorry, man. (Tch... guess he won't go down that easy...)
Masao, Naoya, hurry on down here.

Space

Yeah, yeah, I got it.
Well then, Naoya, let's go.
C'mon, Naoya! Let's go!

Underground

It's all so amazing... like some kind of sci-fi film...
Naoya! If you see anything else suspicious, think before you touch it! Honestly, that Masao... It makes me angry all over again to think about!
This is nuts... If they're building this kinda crap, they must be serious...

Now for the important choice: the right or left door. Who knows what sorts of danger is lurking behind these doors, waiting--

Ah, never mind.

Mikage Police Station
Electric Brain Travel (Dungeon - Abandoned Factory)

The PSP Mikage Police Station dungeon theme is actually a remix of the Abandoned Factory dungeon theme from the PS1 original, so it gets played here as well.

This dungeon's a bit more curvy and filled with dead ends compared to the police station, with the walls made up of freights emblazoned with the SEBEC logo.

Hmm, what did Nanjo tell Naoya? "If you see anything else suspicious, think before you touch it..." "Don't touch anything suspicious without a very good reason..."

I'm pretty sure curiosity is a good reason. Switch on!

There's another switch further inside. What didn't hurt the first time shouldn't hurt a second!

Overall the switches are the only thing to worry about before we can head back up above ground.

It looks like we can enter the SEBEC building now.
I feel like Maki's different somehow...
This is kinda exciting!

SEBEC
A City, SEBEC (Dungeon - SEBEC Above Ground)

SEBEC itself is a pretty nice place, as such a prestigious company should be. Along with demons, the group will also run into some of Kandori's men in black.

Such a nice building also has a few helpful rooms, including a number of Agaysta Trees as well as a few new facilities for us.

Agaysta Tree
Spring of Restoration

The first is Trish's Spring, which is one of our sources of healing within dungeons.

This world runs on give-and-take! Give me money and I'll take away your pain!

Trish heals both HP and MP, but her prices are always more expensive than any of the healing facilities in the city, so it's only smart to use her in a real pinch. She's a fairy who got exiled by King Oberon for being too greedy, and she's only allowed to return to the fairy world after doing enough good deeds. Good luck with that, Trish.

SEBEC also has a fully-stocked store in the building that carries the same kind of items as the convenience stores, so it's technically another source of healing in dungeons.

However, there's one more good source of healing in dungeons, and that's your own party. Healing HP can of course be done with Persona, and the party automatically restores their MP just by walking around the dungeon. If you combine this with the move Estoma or the item Clean Salt, both which ward off weaker foes, you can take a moment to restore MP by simply running around the dungeon for a bit.

Along with being much larger than the previous dungeons, SEBEC also introduces the concept of damage floors, as indicated by the exclamation point on the map. Stepping onto them hurts your entire party, and there's both an item and spell that neutralizes their effect.

We can also stop by the front desk for a moment.

Receptionist: Eh? You came through the basement? I've heard rumors of a division down there that's a secret even to employees... But you say you went through it?

Unfortunately, the elevators aren't working, and we can't even get through the front doors either.

C'mon, man, quit ogling the secretary and get on with it.
Secrets not even the employees know? What's with this company?

The elevators outside of the reception area work just fine. You could just head straight to the top, but there's some goodies and equipment strewn about the building that you'd be missing.

On the fourth floor, SEBEC graciously offers Igor's services should you need them.

I take a moment to fuse Urvashi, a nymph in Hindu lore who is infinitely charming but always elusive. In this game she specializes in Ice magic. Another component of Persona fusion is the use of items in the fusion process. You can add drat near anything you want, including expendable items (random effects), equipment (boosts stats), gems (changes to a different Persona within the same Order), and tablets (adds spells to the Persona's move pool). Using special items called Totems during fusion is also the only way to get certain Personas. I added Mamagna, an all-target Earth skill, to Urvashi this time around.

Along with hidden items, the rooms in SEBEC also have employees milling about.

SEBEC employee: I can't believe something like this happened on the day of your field trip. It must be tough for you kids.

Angry SEBEC employee: And what's with the weird toys!? If I ever get my hands on this clown...!
It seems SEBEC's rank and file know next to nothing.
Looks like these people are victims too.

Along with offices, the fourth floor also houses an underground facility.

Scientist: Oh, Sonomura... please be safe!
That scientist says he knows my mom... But I don't have a mother!
Those scientists... What kind of research is going on here?
This is one suspicious place. Huh... guess the rumors about SEBEC had a little truth to 'em!

Down on the second floor...

SEBEC employee: It must be the curse of the haunted mansion! Of course!

SEBEC employee: But I didn't think they'd resort to biological warfare!
Biological warfare!?
What's Kandori doing!? He's treating the corporation as his personal property!
The haunted mansion... I used to go there a lot to play when I was little.

Now then, it's on to Kandori's office. Simply riding the elevator up to the fifth and top floor won't get you there, though. First you must reach the stairs on the fifth floor, head all the way downstairs...

...and then go back up a different flight of stairs to the top floor. Every day must be leg day for Kandori.

I'm sorry, Mr. Kandori... The woman escaped.
That was a mistake, Takeda. Well... let her be. There's nowhere for her to go. It's more important that the scientists finish the Deva System's adjustments.
Yes, Sir.
He's definitely in there... Are you ready, Naoya?

Ready as I'll ever be... next update.

Ah, thank you so much! I really like showing off some of the less recognized MegaTen titles, and I'm glad to see that a lot of people are looking forward to experiencing the game through my LP. While Persona's gameplay may not have aged well, I think its story has stood the test of time.

Gaius Marius posted:

I also want to point out that when Peace Diner mentions running around in the dungeon to recover SP he means RUN. In contrast to every other system in this game which are universally extremely slow your movement speed in this game is perhaps the fastest I've ever seen in a first person RPG. while sprinting you can cross the entire map in Seconds, of course it's rarely all that helpful with all the twists and dead ends in the various dungeons.

Update 8 - System failure

Confrontation
Stillness Before (Theme of Kandori - Silence)

This is a disgrace, Takeda. First that brat, and now this. When did my company become a nursery?
I see you haven't changed, Kandori. You're like an rear end in a lion's skin... Pushing your luck, aren't you? Does President Saeki know about this?
My, my, the young master of the Nanjo Group. No, the old man knows nothing. But this is preposterous... Your mother would spank you if she knew you had stooped to breaking and entering. Or is that your senile butler's job?
Silence! You... Don't think I'll easily forgive this!
Yo, quit grandstandin', man. You're gonna pay for what you did!

...Undisciplined children are no better than dumb beasts. Takeda. Take them from my sight. Do it however you like, just don't make a mess.

:siren: Boss - Takeda :siren:

Videos for boss battles will be included for those who wish to hear voice acting/SFX and see animations, and the videos will also include pre-battle dialogue. Rejoice that the all-important toilet flushing Persona summoning sound effect was retained for the PSP remake.

Bloody Destiny
Dead Line (Mid-Boss Battle)

"Bloody Destiny" is another one of my top 3 PSP themes, while the original PS1 version is still badass after all these years.

Kandori!

No matter which Persona he's using at the time, Nanjo attempts to use the Expel-based skill Hama on Kandori even if his Persona doesn't know the skill.

What!? Don't tell me... You too!?

Kandori summons his Persona and blasts the party with the all-target Fire attack Maragi. This attack hits everyone, even if a character's Persona nulls, drains, or repels Fire.

Yes, Sir.
You're going nowhere!
Oh, no you don't!

Kandori (quite literally) slides out of the room and leaves the party to fend off against Takeda and four black-suited men.

Now taste the power of my Persona!

Takeda is our first boss battle of the game, and as such isn't too difficult to deal with. The group specializes in physical and gun attacks, with Takeda's unnamed Persona also possessing ailment-inflicting and Wind skills.

The men in black use Drive Shot and Middle Shot with their automatics, with Takeda able to use Middle Shot as well. Though Maki's Phaleg is weak to physical attacks, I leave him on due to his healing ability.

Takeda's other physical attack is Spin Kick, a Tech move that hits one person.

When he summons his Persona, Takeda can also use the medium-range Wind attack Earthly Vortex, the Blind-inducing Delyte, and Quikka. Quikka induces the ailment Counter in the user, which raises allows them to make counter-attacks.

Luckily, Takeda has several weaknesses that the party can hit. One is Ice, which is the reason I fused Urvashi earlier. Other than that, he is also weak to Earth, Tech, and Rush. Takeda's 720 HP goes down easy, and the battle ends without too much damage done to the party.

Confrontation
God Taker (Theme of Kandori - Pathos)

There's no sign that he used the door... There must be another way out.
...That's Kandori, huh...? Where have I...?
Hm? Wassup, Maki? You look all down.
Huh? O-Oh, I'm okay. It's nothing. C'mon, let's hurry after him!
There must be another way out. I'll keep watch. Find the exit... quickly.

It's nothing, really. I just felt a little faint. But thanks for worrying about me!

Up to Naoya again, huh. Well, the desk looks pretty suspicious.

A hidden path, eh? He seems to love his cheap tricks...
Naoya! Let's hurry after him!
Let's catch that dickwipe and put an end to this!
His makeshift ambition given form is most likely carefully hidden ahead.
He screwed up my town... He's going down! Huh? Ahaha... it's nothing. C'mon, let's go!

SEBEC
A City, SEBEC (Dungeon - SEBEC Above Ground)

So, in the chaos of battle Kandori managed to slip over to his desk, open the secret path, and get out without any of the party noticing. Not gonna lie, I've got some respect for a man who can do that. The secret path takes us to an elevator that allows us to get to the basement.

Along with the damage floors from earlier, SEBEC also has trap chests lying around. Opening one will hurt Naoya (and only Naoya) in some way, whether it just be damage or inflicting an ailment like poison.

And y'know, that's fine, but imagining that hag... I mean, my mom, crying over it... It bugs the hell out of me.
I've never gotten along with Kandori, ever since meeting him at a party. I wish I had known his scheme then...
Let's hurry after Kandori!

SEBEC (Underground Lab)
Touching Unhappiness (Dungeon - SEBEC Underground Research Lab)

The underground lab eschews the elegant white walls and instead opts for a bright red. While the PS1 track changes entirely, the PSP music has a more subtle change: the intro is ditched, the length of the loop shortens, and a kicking drum is added to the mix. If you aren't paying attention (or are distracted by the incredible cacophony that Naoya's shoes make against the metal floor), it's easy to miss.

Like the above-ground offices, the labs underground are full of employees realizing they got screwed over by Kandori.

Scientist: Though it presents a rather intriguing situation, don't you think?
Scientist: Was that high school boy a friend of yours? I'm sorry to say, he was...
It sounds like someone from St. Hermelin snuck in here before us!
That Kandori... He's gone too far!
Don't these guys feel guilty at all for what they did?

We also get to see (or rather, not see) a new dungeon gimmick: dark areas. These make it so that the only way you know where you're going is to look at your map (thank goodness for the mini-map).

The party makes it to the other side, where another lab is located.

Scientist: I knew he had his own secret projects, but he must've been in with Kandori!
I feel like I've seen this place before.
Let's get that Kandori and bring this town back to normal!
Naoya... Are your weapons ready? We won't let him escape this time!

The party makes it to the last door in the underground, where Kandori is surely waiting.

Strange Atmosphere
Theme of Kandori - Ambition

Preposterous. It's the rest of mankind that must atone. What I've done here is nothing more than facilitate that process.
But that young man... You didn't have to send him into the dimensional rift! What did you hope to gain by throwing away a child's life!?
I won't allow anyone to stand in my way. Not even a child... Judgement will come regardless. It's only a question of sooner, or later.

Ah... I had a feeling you'd come. So you beat Takeda? He always was useless...
Your time has come, Kandori!
Loud noises from young children... I don't have time for you. I have matters to attend to... Come, Dr. Nicholai.

The two men walk into the large chamber, the doors closing behind them.

So this is the Deva System. What are Kandori's plans for this!?
This machine... I... Where do I know this thing from...?

The room begins to rumble, shaking the screen.

I... I'm disappearing! Nicholai! What's happening!?
It's over, Sir. You and I are going down together! For your treachery, for your crimes, for all mankind... you will atone!
Nicholai, you swine! H-How dare you betray me!?
Young man! If we are reduced to our component atoms, the system will stop! The barrier enclosing this town will be released! Leave us and escape!
You out there! Boy! Stop the system!

Let's save him! There's no need for the old guy to die just 'cause of Kandori! We'll smack down Kandori ourselves! That's what we came for, isn't it!?
Wait! The old man must have invented the system. He's taking responsibility... We should respect his wishes. We don't even know how to stop the machine.

Here! This'll stop the machine! The blue button increases the output... But the red button is the emergency stop! If you push it, we can save him!
Maki...? Where did you learn that!?
I don't know how I know, I just know! Naoya! Hurry!

We can save him if you push the red button! Red or blue... What's it going to be!?

Destroying Kandori won't deliver any justice, and Dr. Nicholai doesn't need to go down for him... so Naoya pushes the red button. (Pushing the blue button basically gets the same results, but choosing red unlocks a special something down the road)

H...How can this be!? My plan should have worked perfectly! Don't tell me... Is she--!?

BLACK KID (Aki's Theme)

Heh... Heheh... Hahaha! I refuse to die! Now... take me to your world!

Whoa! Wh-What the!?
Ugh... K-Kandori...!

Strange Atmosphere
Mystery

Naoya stumbles onto his feet, still disoriented from the trip.

Mark gets up next, fitting his hat back onto his head.

...Nggh...

...Ma...sao...?
Ungh...

Last to get up is Nanjo, who slides his glasses back on before standing up.

Looks like everyone's unhurt. We certainly have the devil's luck.
Hey... isn't this the school gym? The one they tore down six months ago?
I get it... We've gone back...
Gone back? To six months ago!? C'mon, Maki, snap out of it!
A time slip? That's rather different than what your mother said.
...I've told you before, I don't have a real mom. I never thought the stuff Yosuke was saying was... actually true...

While the group discusses their predicament, the gym doors open up and a girl runs in.

Harried girl: That girl in black came back again...
No way! Th-That's impossible! Yosuke!

Maki rushes out of the room, leaving the three boys to themselves.

Could Yosuke be that guy who went missing a couple months ago?
...That dolt. I can't believe she took off on her own at a time like this. Come, Naoya. We'd better go after Maki.

Restless boy: I must've been dreaming! Ahahahaha!

You there. How many days are left until the sports festival?
Female student: Uch, you're always so rude. The sports festival is still a month off. You have amnesia or something, Nanjo?
...So the date's the same. Tell me, which year am I in?
Female student: What the... You really DO have amnesia! We're all second-year students. Man, I gotta tell the others about this!

These two tracks still hold up for me. Dead Line's PSP remix in Persona 2 is what I wish made it into this game. Mystery is a silent, rather simple track that really feels very peaceful to me. I really can listen to that track on end forever. :allears:

Takeda's persona is supposedly Noperra-Bo, but I only remember reading that somewhere before. So I consider that a "Tales From My rear end" sorta thing as I've never been able to confirm it. The Maragi from Kandori hits everybody; even those that either absorb fire or are immune to it. A lame handicap, really. Elly if you have her with you, knows what persona he is using is. The only threat in that entire battle is if everyone decides to spam MidShot, and even that is if they get lucky with multiple hits. Cherish the sword in that cabinet too, as if you don't have the patience for gambling and you don't pull a plasma sword that's as good as it's going to get for you for a long time.

[Whoops, misread somethong] Also thank you for reminding me about his fire attack, I'm gonna edit that in real quick.

Bloody Destiny is way too peppy.

Who the heck thought that was an improvement over Deadline?

I can only defend Bloody Destiny as far as the song itself and not in place of Dead Line, really. It's an enjoyable song that gets stuck in my head, but I do prefer the original over it. I don't know if "peppy" is the exact word I would used to describe it, but it's much closer to the style of P3/P4 despite the game itself retaining its atmosphere, so it doesn't entirely mesh.

As something fun, feel free to attempt to decipher the lyrics to Bloody Destiny and post 'em here! P1P's soundtrack only ever got released as a bonus with the game and liner notes didn't provide the lyrics, so there's absolutely no official lyrics for it.

On the other hand, it seems like a lot of people hate it but I think Lone Prayer is a quite good substitute for the original P1 battle theme. It manages to capture a very similar mood to the original P1 track while also capturing the dark mood of the game well. The opening section in particular. My only regret with that is that the Persona Awakening theme didn't make the cut in the PSP version.

My only problem with Lone Prayer is my problem with vocals in any common battle theme: no matter how good it is, you're gonna get drat tired of hearing it, even quicker than a battle theme without vocals. I played P1P so much around my mom that she can still sing Lone Prayer to this day. Well, that may just be a problem I have, though.

I think in general that while I love the PSP tracks, the soundtrack isn't as defined as the original. Many of the tracks sound like they were cut from P3 or P4 rather than standing on their own. On the other hand, the original PS1 soundtrack has a more distinct sound to it. There's times in my life where I've heard a song and thought, "Hey, that sounds like Persona 1," which the PSP soundtrack doesn't bring out as much.

Quick Question, about how long is this game for both routes in Hours and how long have you played?

Hmmm, I'd say both routes it about 40 to 60 hours, though it's hard for me to tell because the PSP version does the strange thing of also counting hours spent in sleep mode (so my total time on my original copy is something like 150 hours despite not playing nearly that long). The file I'm using for this LP is currently clocked in at 15 hours.

Speaking of music, I apologize if the next update is a bit late. There are some tracks from the PS1 game which don't appear on any official soundtrack releases nor on the ripped PSF files (or if they do then I'm a dummy who can't locate them), so I'm going through and just recording them off of the game itself. Sorry about that!

Alright, two PS1 tracks have been added to previous updates. Since they have no official names as far as I can tell, I had to make do with sorta dumb generic names. Oh well.

Update 9 - Bullying intervention

School Days
Dungeon - Ice Castle

We need to chase after Maki, but why not take the time to see what else has changed in the school?

Huh. There's no hole here.
Student: Why does that girl keep attacking the school? Does she have some kinda grudge?
Male student: Doesn't that girl in black look like someone we know?

It's also a good idea to head to the infirmary, where we can save and heal ourselves.

Ooh, it's Nurse Natsumi!
.....
Ah, Ms. Saeko. It feels as though we haven't seen you in a while.

She's... She's all depressed...! H-Huh? Hey, what's wrong, Ms. Saeko? And don't just say you overate again!
Even Ms. Saeko is acting strangely...

...Let's just move on to the principal's office, shall we?

Don't tell me that girl in black showed up again!
No, that's not it. But who's this girl in black you mentioned...?
You haven't heard about her, Kei? A girl in black clothes has been appearing... It only started happening recently. They say she controls demons.
Whoa... there are demons over here, too...?
But don't worry! Principal Ooishi and I will protect you children!
Wh... What the hell!? Why's Hamya bein' so nice to us!? U-Um, we gotta get goin'!

There's far less people hanging around school compared to the last time we were here, but a few classrooms have students inside.

Why don't you get one, too? Oh... I suppose that's impossible for you, hmm? It would cost quite a bit of money, after all. So sorry.

...That was Yuko, right? Am I seein' things? Did she used to be like that...?
Oh my, Nanjo. Are you still mingling with that sort?
...It's not as though I enjoy it.
"That sort"? Is she talkin' about us?

But then why does it anger me so to hear others say it...? What on earth...? Did your dinner disagree with you, Yuko?
Whaddaya mean, "that sort"!?
Yes? What is it? Don't speak to me without a good reason!
Female student: Everyone loves Maki and everyone hates Yuko. But oddly enough, they're friends.
Male student: I can't stand Yuko! Why is Maki still friends with her, anyway?

Male student: Chisato, on the other hand, never won anything. Plus she got taken by the girl in black... She's got some seriously bad luck.
Female student: Maki was good friends with Chisato. She must be awfully worried.
Chisato Kasai... So she's missing here, too. The fates must have it in for her...
Man, I forget sometimes what a good painter Maki is.

Student council member: He's supposedly trying to be like one of the past presidents... Yama-something.
Student council member: Our president's really into it. It makes us feel like we should try just as hard.
Student council member: What are these fools thinking, passing me over as president!? I dreamed of going down in St. Hermelin history as a perfect council president!!
Heh, guy got what he deserved! The one before had big plans, but did diddly squat.
So someone else is president here... A wise decision. Though it doesn't seem as though there was a new election...

With everybody else talked to, the group heads to Class 2-5 in search of Maki.

Daily Life
Conversation - Generic 1

I didn't think I'd see people from the original world here!

What? Oh, don't tell me... Are you Yosuke Naito? The guy who went missing?
Yeah, that's me! About two months ago, Chisato... She and I wandered into this world. I'm from the same place you are!
You said, "this world." Then this isn't the past, but another dimension, or another world, yes?
Yeah. I thought it was the past too, at first. Everything here is exactly the same as it was a year ago. Some things are weird, though. The police station turned into a forest, and the hospital is a castle... And Maki there was just like you see her. Yeah... It was practically a paradise... Until last month.

The "many worlds" theory, where countless similar worlds exist.
Seriously? We thought you ran off with Chisato, but you were in another world? I want to say that's completely nuts... But then again, we're in the same boat.
It's hard to believe, but it isn't out of the question for the Deva System...
Yeah, I can see that... I didn't think you'd bring back this world's Maki, though.
Whoa, whoa, whoa! You're saying... Maki really is Maki, but not the one we know?

I wasn't trying to lie... I just wasn't sure until I got back here. I never even thought there was another world, let alone that I'd go over to it.
I see. No wonder your words and actions seemed amiss...
I was dozing off in class, and when I woke up, I was in another world. I didn't figure it out until much later.
Oh, man... Then the real Maki is still somewhere in that hospital... Couldn't you have at least said something, uh... Maki?
I'm sorry, I really am. But if I did mention it, would you have believed me? I just thought if we beat Kandori, both worlds would go back to normal... That's why I figured I'd wait until it was all over to tell you.
Hmmm... So does that mean Chisato's still with that brat in black?
Ugh... I was with her, too... Dammit!

Tension

The conversation is interrupted by a huge tremor that rattles the windows and shakes the floor.

I took away the exits! Now no one can escape! Ahahahahahahaha...!
There's no mistaking that voice... It's that girl! Did she say she removed the exits!? If demons show up now, we'll be slaughtered! Dammit... I gotta go!
Wait, Yosuke! Don't strain yourself! Everyone... give me a hand. We have to do something!
I'm not sure what's goin' on here, but at this rate, we can't go outside.

There's no use sitting around and worrying over this! We gotta take action and find a way back home.
What sort of relationship does that girl have with Kandori? There's too little data to draw a useful conclusion...
That girl must be somewhere in the school! Don't let your guard down just because she's a kid. She has strange powers...
Dammit! If only I wasn't so banged up, I could get Chisato back this time... Huh? My wounds? Oh... The last time that little girl was here, she kicked my rear end... Man, talk about pathetic!

Let Butterflies Spread Until The Dawn
Dungeon - Distorted School

Apart from sealing off the exits, the girl in black has also transformed the school's layout

Luckily for us, the Velvet Room and infirmary are located right nearby.

I don't know what to do... I'm in a real fix. Right, Ms. Saeko?
........
I thought she'd at least speak up at a time like this... But she's still down.

The school is sectioned off into different areas, seemingly in different dimensions. A few rooms have scared students in them, which Maki takes the time to reassure, as well as students with some more savory information.

Are you saying there's another one like her, then?
Student: I think so. Well... it's a forest now, but remember what used to be the flower garden? I saw her playing there.
Uhh, if this forest used to be a flower garden... I don't get this town at all.
A forest? Hmmm... Yosuke did say that a forest had replaced the police station.
The police station is where we went to rescue Masao and Hidehiko, right? Now that you mention it, that is the area where it should be... It was a beautiful flower garden. I was surprised to see it become a forest.

Student: Hey, are you really Naoya?
Hey, we should hurry and get going! We have to go... See you!

Though we had been on the second floor, the transformed St. Hermelin has us back on the first floor.

Another classroom, probably just some more scared students...

Argh!

We get our first taste of pitfalls, which will send you spiraling back down to a floor before. The party heads back up to the second floor and enters the room this time.

Confrontation
Rage (Reiji's Theme)

Whoa! Are you okay!? Alright, demon, hold it right there!
Demon: Ah, more have arrived. My fists thirst for blood this night... I shall grow flowers of blood to my heart's content.
Yo, man, it's dangerous! Step back! W-Wait, are you... Are you Reiji!?
You guys? Stay back... This one's mine.
Demon: Mm... a feisty child. In acknowledgement of your bravado, I'll kill you first. Regret your inexperience in Hell!

Without missing a beat, Reiji summons his Persona - Bres, king of the Tuatha Dé Danann who was beautiful to behold but harsh and inhospitable.

Daily Life
Rage (Reiji's Theme)

What? Then you can all...?
That seems to be the case. By the way... You appear to be the real Reiji.
What's that mean?
This place isn't your world. I don't know how else to explain it.
Kandori sent us here, to an alternate world. I take it you met the same fate. That scientist mentioned a young man sent through the dimensional rift... You, I presume? So why are you here, safe and sound? Why are you pursuing Kandori?

When I came to, I was here. That's all... You don't need to know the rest.
A child wearing white...?
C'mon, drop the hotshot act. We're gonna smack Kandori around and find a way back. You should come. I bet your mom's worried about you.
What? That bastard's here, too...!? Alright... I'll go with you.
It's decided, then! Nice to meet you, Reiji! I'm Maki Sonomura!
......
What, is something on my face? Oh, I get it! You were admiring me. Well, I am pretty cute! It's only natural!

Mark pushes himself in front of Reiji, trying to block him from Maki's view.

Huh? Whaddaya mean, what's got me so pissed off? Shuddup, dude!
You're asking me why Reiji is after Kandori? Mm... we'll find out eventually. For now, it's enough that our goals dovetail.
Reiji said a child wearing white rescue him, right? Could that have been Mai...? I've seen her several times, but she's a very mysterious girl...
That Maki girl... I don't think this is the first time we've met. Who is she...?

And with that, we now have our fifth and final party member! Reiji is what many people consider to be the biggest damage-dealer in the game, as his fists are accurate and have a drat good critical hit rate, while his gun has good range and does multiple hits. Even without a Persona, he has a high Strength stat that surpasses Mark's, and with a Persona he's even better. His best Arcana is Death, an Arcana whose Personas deal mostly in physical and death skills.

His conversation options are typical of his appearance, except for the last one which reveals one of his hobbies.

Magic tricks! Who knew demons would be so smitten with simple sleight of hand.

After getting Reiji, the party continues on back down to the first floor.

While many enemies in the game are more common demons and mythological figures, the school has a few more interesting additions. There's two different toilet spirits, Bukimi and Hanako from the Japanese urban legends.

Dribblers are spirits who just wanna kick back and play some b-ball.

Anatomy models have managed to find new life as well.

Lastly there's Carrie, named after the Stephen King character. Her name was, for some reason, changed to Karen for the PS1 localization.

Right before we head to the courtyard to confront the black-dressed girl, we stop by the Velvet Room to fuse two new Personas.

First is Ogma, an Irish deity who is one of the trí dée dána (or three gods of skill). He's an early source of Dekunda, which will nullify all stat debuffs that the enemy throws at you.

Second is Lilim, daughters of the succubi queen Lilith who tempt men and kidnap children. She specializes in inflicting ailments, and is useful throughout the entire game due to her absorption of all elemental magic.

Now then, to the courtyard we go.

BLACK KID (Aki's Theme)

The party approaches her.

No way, Jose! I don't listen to anybody but my Daddy! Try and stop me, flatty!
Flat--!? Oh, that does it! What a little brat!

Maki assumes a fighting position, ready for a battle.

Cool it, Maki... She's just a kid. You gotta have patience with--
Shuddup, monkeyboy! Ook ook, eek eek, it's a monkeyboy!
What did you call me, you spoiled brat!?
Calm down, monkeyman.
Nanjo, you jerk! You're next!
Geez, won't you shut up!? Now would be a good time... for you to die here!

...You'd all better snap out of it, or it'll be your funeral.
Get them, Tesso!

:siren: Boss - Tesso :siren:

Battle With Tesso
Child Abuse (Battle - Tesso)

I highly recommend checking out the music for this battle..

What the hell IS this thing!?
Awww... it's adorable!

After Maki makes her comment, Tesso attempts to unload a case of bullets into Naoya but misses.

Tesso (known as Robo Rat in Revelations) is a demonic spirit who was borne from the Buddhist monk Raigo after he died during a hunger strike. Unlike Takeda, he really isn't messing around and specializes in Gravity, Nuclear, and Rush attacks.

He can use both the medium-strength one-target Gravity attack Gryva as well as the all-target Gravity attack Magry.

Also within his arsenal is the Rush attack Stun Bite which damages a single party member and potentially inflicts paralysis. He can also inflict Blind with Delyte.

His big "screw you" move is Megido, an all-target Nuclear attack that can knock a big chunk of HP off of everybody and turn a winning battle into a losing one pretty quickly.

His weaknesses are Rush and Electricity, but failing that he's also vulnerable to swords, spears, and axes. If you can manage to stay on your toes and keep up with healing and maybe knock him down a peg or two with debuffs, then you'll do fine.

Daily Life
Child Abuse (Intro)

Daddy's REAL strong! You guys won't stand a chance!

Aww...! She got away again.
...Who is that girl...?

The group huddles around Yosuke, waiting for some good news.

Yeah! The school's back to normal, thanks to you guys.
Don't worry about it.
I really can't thank you guys enough. By the way... I want you to meet someone. Would you mind coming with me?
Why?
There's a guy who's helped me out since I came here. He actually believed me... He's investigating the two worlds... Maybe he's figured something out by now.
Wow, I'm kinda surprised someone took you seriously. Who is this guy?
Uh... you'll see. Alright, I'll be waiting at the library.

Yosuke hobbles off back through the door.

Wanna go after him, Reiji?
......
Man! You really don't know how to play along. You gotta take it easy, y'know?
...Leave me alone...
Whatever you say, man. Alright, let's get going, Naoya.

Jeez Mark, don't you know how to talk to people? Here, just watch Naoya.

...Well, we'll get there eventually.

That girl referred to Kandori as her father, but is she really his child? This is the first I've heard of him having a daughter.
That Reiji jerk sure acts strange around people. Hey, let's you and me do something about it.
I wonder if he's the one Yosuke means... If so, he'll definitely be at the library.

Oh, that reminds me. Would it be okay (for archival purposes) for me to put together compilation posts with your Persona analysis? As I've stated before, I'm really not the best at games and am mostly doing this LP to show off the story and characters, but I know a lot of people would also be interested in hearing about strategy, and I think you're doing a fantastic job of talking about all the different Persona.

Update 10 - Mirror, mirror

Now that the whole Tesso situation is resolved, let's make sure everybody's still doing alright.

But I hear you rescued us, so thanks very much!
......
She's... She's so despondent...!

...Hmph. I like her better now that she's not so loud.
I'm sure Yukino would be shocked to see Ms. Saeko this way.
We might be better off with this one. She won't make us do push-ups as punishment.

And of course it wouldn't do to move on without checking in with our dear principal.

Thank goodness... But what was that? From what I can tell, the school's layout has been shaken up...
Don't worry! We'll protect you!
Did you hear that, Ms. Ooishi!? So considerate of her... It can only be the result of the stellar education you provide!
Oh, no, no, Hanya. It's due to your guidance!
...I can't take this much longer. Let's go, Naoya!

Indeed. With those two done, we head on up to the library to meet with Yosuke's patron.

Strange Atmosphere
Child Abuse (Intro)

It seems you're having a unique experience... I'm rather jealous.

...Are you really Tsutomu? Dude... He's talking like a normal person!
Hm.... the me on the other side must be an odd duck indeed. I'd like to meet him.

We heard you're investigating the two worlds. What are your thoughts thus far?
The things in this world seem to be unrelated... But they are all connected by the strings of fate. The same holds true for the black door that suddenly appeared. Only those who can draw on that strength may learn the truth. Unfortunately... that does not seem to be my role.
Our coming here was inevitable. Which means... it's on us to solve everything.
I don't know who spun the thread, but that's a helpful way to think of it. Now, name this man you pursue who holds the string's end.

Hm. Exactly the name I expected. In truth, I knew beforehand that these incidents would occur... thanks to the prophecy of a certain monkey-suited gentleman at the shrine.
Monkey-suited!? There's nothing gentle about monkeys!
Will someone shut this dumb ape up!?
Look who's talking, bib boy!
...What a bunch of children.

Y-yes... He said his name was Philemon, but... should we do something about them?
Oh, it's fine. Just ignore them, they're always like that! Naoya, let's try our luck at the Alaya Shrine. I've met that man before too... Maybe he knows where Kandori is!
The Alaya Shrine is right where it was in our world. Find a way home. And... if you happen to see Chisato, save her for me. I'm begging you...

Though you're a rather unruly crowd...
For heaven's sake! Thanks to this idiot, I forgot what I was going to ask!
Dammit! I'll settle this, just you wait!
...I told you to leave me alone.
This door... I don't like the way it feels...

You're curious too, I see. This door appeared during the incident last month. I've tried everything, but it won't budge. Though if the threads of fate lead there, even this door must open.

Alright, that's our next objective set. Time to bust outta here.

The school troubles have been settled for now, but...
I got no business at a school. I just wanna hurry and kill that bastard.
The town's probably pretty different from your town, too!

Let Butterflies Spread Until The Dawn
City 2 - Accident

While the layout has stay relatively the same, there's a few things that are different in this Mikage-cho. The biggest is the gargantuan wall on the right side that spans as far across the city as we can see. The residents have also changed, but the party heads to the shrine first.

But this world's Tsutomu seemed reliable...

What's that? Say, Masao... isn't that butterfly...?
Could this be one of his traps...? One false move and I'll catch it and crush it.
No... I... feel faint...!

Like last time, the screen flashes white and black as the butterfly flits about. Y'know Philemon, we've really got stop meeting like this.

:siren: Scene - The Expel Mirror :siren:

How are you, friends? Just as you thought, this world is a counterfeit of your own. It is this world where Kandori's ambitions lie. If you pursue him, you will eventually discover the nature of this world and how to return to your home world. Kandori has made his fortress on the east side of town, where he is searching for something. Should it fall into his hands, there will be no tomorrow for either world.

You must stop Kandori. The first step is to use the subway terminal to reach the east side of town. But, the gate has a guardian. Look for the Expel Mirror.

Space
Conversation - Generic 1

He said there's a demon in the subway. And this, uh... Exp... Expel...?
The Expel Mirror. He said if we have it, we can cross to the east side. Kandori evidently wasn't satisfied with simply overtaking our town... But I'll teach him that his brand of greed will be his ruin.
But I've never even heard of this "Expel Mirror" before...
Hm... I feel as though I've heard that name somewhere... What do you think, Naoya?

I know I've heard of that mirror before... it's on the tip of my tongue.
The wall dividing this town is new. We used to be able to go across town.
Why don't you think for yourself instead of relying on others?

Reiji's just embarrassed 'cause he doesn't know where the mirror is either. Don't worry, Naoya's got your back! Before that, though, let's take a lot around town, starting with the Himeno Mansion.

I'm afraid they're not accessible to the public. So they're not stolen, you see.
Why would you care about that stuff? What, you think we're thieves?
My, is that how it came across? I didn't mean that at all. It sounds as though you have an inferiority complex.

...I'll be waiting outside.
Yuko! That's so rude! Apologize to them.
But Maki... You're my friend! These people are just... just...
Sheesh, Yuko... Oh, well. C'mon, everyone, let's go.
Maki, won't you come in for some tea? I have an extra serving of cake that our own personal patisserie baked. I'm sure my brothers would be delighted to see you, too!
Yuko... All right. I'll stop by with everyone next time.
...How dull.

Across the way, another familiar face shows up in an familiar place.

You're not debt collectors, are you? 'Cause there's no money here! Those ruins I was countin' on didn't have any treasure, so there goes my business!

Business? What sort of business were you conducting in the ruins?
Sheesh, Nanjo! Kaneda's a ruin raider.
Ruin raiding...? No one actually does that. You're not a kid, Maki, so cut it out with that stuff.
But that's what everyone says...
Hey, that reminds me... There was a rumor about how that old lady got so rich... About a year back, people were sayin' it was 'cause she went around raidin' ruins. You believed that stuff, Maki? But then again... you are a different Maki.
Will you shut your yap!? If you got no business with me, scram!

After getting the boot, the party heads to the last building in the ward, the Yin&Yan store.

Something seems a little...different.

No matter how many times I come here, I'm never gonna get used to that. It's so weird bein' asked, "What weapon would you like?" with a smile.
The weapons here are strictly for dealing with demons. No wonder the police aren't needed.
What's with this store? All these mags are a year old.

Young man: Is there a tree-planting campaign on?
Area man: There was a girl who used to play in that flower patch all the time. I wonder what she's been up to since the place turned into a forest. Huh? Black clothes? No, she was a cute little girl in white clothes.
The girl in white clothes must be little Mai.

The Expel Mirror is hiding somewhere in the north side of town, but why not stop and do some shopping at Mikage Sun Mall first?

First I stop off at the Velvet Room and fuse Illuyanka, the Hittite god of storm who ruled the sea but was slayed by Tarhunz. He's weak to elements but strong against physical and comes packed with Gravity, Rush, and Nuclear attacks. I put him on Reiji.

The Sennen Mannen-Do now has two merchants available. The first sells the same items as the other store, but the second one provides a new service.

Instead of using money, Khamenturun wants gems and in return will give you items or incense. Items include both helpful healing items as well as skill stones used in Persona fusion. Incense permanently boosts a character's stat by one and can also be used to boost stats during Persona fusion. You need to watch out, though, since what gems he wants for each incense changes depending on the phase of the moon.

Don't let them trick you into buying anything that seems suspicious.
The clerks are suspicious... but their stock is even more suspicious.
Y'know, I've been wondering about the relationship between those two...
That's a cute mask! I want to hang it up in my room.
Area man: There've been more demons lately, I've noticed. But they seem different from the demons that girl in black had with her.

A cute girl transferred into his class, and he can't stand the sight of her. Hm? Oh, yes, medicine... right.
Woo! I'm Mr. Frog! Ribbit, ribbit! Just kidding. Quit looking so grim! Let's do this with a smile, man!
I'm not tired or anything. I just wanna hurry up and go.
Area man: Until lately, we just had to look out for demons when the girl in black showed up. But now I'm nervous... They've been roaming around without the girl..
Little girl: Everyone's scared of the demons, but I don't think we need to worry. I just have this feeling that they won't attack us.
Demons that ignore humans...? But clearly, they've attacked us. Could they be choosing their targets? Inconceivable...
The demons only really started getting bad here a little while ago. But even then, there hasn't been much talk of them attacking people.

Are they complete idiots? There's no way everything can be fun and games!
Naoya... Do you also think things are fine as long as you enjoy each day? Would you idle away the hours, never knowing what lurks behind that peace?

Oh jeez Nanjo, don't say stuff like that to people playing video games. Or people sitting on the internet reading through other people playing video games, for that matter.

High school girl: I'm gonna get a place by the plasma wall. The night view is awesome out there.
Wouldn't you wanna live somewhere like Shibuya or Daikanyama?
High school girl: Daikan-what? I don't get it. Well, whatever. I like this town, so I'm gonna stay here.
I've heard of Shibuya, but what's Daikanyama? Is that a place? There's a city called that in your world? Huh...
Daikanyama is pretty small compared to Shibuya... But it's been in a bunch of magazines lately. These girls oughtta know it.

The Rosa Candida has changed into an armor store. I wonder if they'd sell me that mohawk the mannequin in the back is wearing...

I'm not picky, but if they have any armor with "#1" markings... Mm, probably not. Never mind...
My mom has the worst fashion sense! Last time she went shopping, she got me a t-shirt with a huge airbrushed wolf. Where in the world does she find this stuff!? Oh... uh... Not that I'm worried about my mom or anything. Don't get me wrong.
I don't give a crap what I wear. Can we hurry this up?

Obviously.

Area woman: I'm lucky to be able to live in a town this amazing. But when things get TOO amazing, it makes people nervous. You start wondering if it's all a dream that'll end when you wake up.
I don't get that lady... She says she gets nervous when things are too nice. I think it's wonderful when things are nice every day! Don't you?

Now then, all this shopping is making me hungry. Maybe Mark can finally give us that all-you-can-eat lunch at Peace Diner that he promised?

Alright then. Rather than offering a service, Peace Diner is just a restaurant you can hang out at where at least one of your party members will remind you of your current goal.

What, no burgers or fries or shakes at all? Lame! What's that clerk talkin' all big for when they have nothin' to sell!?
It won't do to be too hasty. In the end, going one step at a time is quickest.
It's nice coming here. I feel like I'm back to being a normal high schooler.
Area man: I accidentally ran smack into a demon yesterday... But just when I was sure it was staring right at me, it walked away. It was like... it was looking for someone in particular.

So, after a nice shopping trip, Naoya leads them to the location of the Expel Mirror - Mikage-cho's Hisotrical Society, nestled at the top of the first ward.

Strange Atmosphere
Door, Frozen Shut

Here it is! This must be the Expel Mirror!

.....! What the...!?
Girl's voice: Don't take this... You shouldn't... You shouldn't...

Just as mysteriously as it appeared, the girl's image disappears.

It looked like a little girl's face, but she was saying not to take "this." Did she mean the Expel Mirror?
Who gives a drat? We gotta have it, or else.
That face just now... It looked like Mai...

As gently as he can, Mark slips the mirror from its resting place and brings it to the front of the room.

We can fight the monster in the subway once we have this, right?

With that all settled, the party heads down into the depths of the subway.

Kama Palace
Invasion (Dungeon - Subway)

The subway's interior hasn't changed much since we went down it to find Elly back in our world, but the layout has become considerably longer and twisted.

The walls are plastered with advertisements, with the second set advertising the Devil Summoner game and strategy guide.

This dungeon introduces us to moving panels, as seen by the arrows on the mini-map. These panels will simply move you in the direction indicated. Didn't want to go that way? Too bad, now you are.

Confrontation
Dead Line (Monster Intro)

Yog-Sothoth Jr.: But you cannot pass... until you have defeated me...
I knew it was gonna say that! Let's do this, Naoya!
Now's not the time to bitch and moan. If we don't beat this thing, we'll never get out hands on that bastard!

:siren: Boss - Yog-Sothoth Jr. :siren:

Bloody Destiny
Dead Line (Mid-Boss Battle)

Shaddup!

Our opponent this time is Yog-Sothoth Jr. Yog-Sothoth himself is a Lovecraftian cosmic entity who knows all and sees all, but who exactly is Yog-Sothoth Jr.? The most plausible explanation is that he's the offspring of Yog-Sothoth and the deity Shub-Niggurath, as they were believed to have mated. Seeing as he begins battle by screaming their names, it's likely.

So, Yog is sorta a cool-down boss after Tesso. His main specialty is the medium-damage Electric attack Sanraigeki, which can also potentially shock any party member who gets hit with it. He also has the potential to freeze people with his medium-damage Ice attack Mighty Wave. Other than those moves, he can put people to sleep with the ailment-inducing Dormina.

Yog is the first boss to start messing around with debuffs, as he can cast Tarunda (attack down) and Sukuna (hit rate down). Having a Persona with Dekunda handy to dispel the debuffs is a good idea, but not super necessary for beating Yog.

He's also the first boss to absorb or repel elements - Ice and Electric, respectively. He still has plenty of weaknesses, though, taking double damage from Nuclear, Gravity, Blast, and Sword. Most of the people in my party had at least one skill that could hit him hard, so he goes down in a measly three turns.

Yog-Sothoth Jr.: N'grkdl'lh... You who have defeated me... My master would be pleased to see it is you who vanquished me. Now go...

What a dumb monster! How could it let them win?

BLACK KID (Aki's Theme)

Up ahead is where I live. If you go in there, I'll never let you out!
We're still going in, you realize. We absolutely must defeat Kandori.
I won't let you! If you go in there, I'll trap you inside!
You dumb kid... We're not gonna fall for the same trick twice! You better start behavin', or we'll really punish you.
I'm not dumb! Watch, I came up with a really fun game! You'll fight a cute girl in it... Wait and see!

And just like that, she's gone again.

The demon that was here before mentioned its "master"... Did it mean Aki, or...?
That Aki is so full of herself... I'll give her a good scolding next time!
You're not taking the stuff that brat said seriously, are you?
Alright, let's get back topside and look for Kandori!

Let Butterflies Spread Until The Dawn
City 2 - Darkness

The east side of Mikage-cho is looking quite a bit worse for wear - other than the wall, it's also plagued with a thick black mist. Broken roads are strewn about, so the only way to get to the next ward is through the Black Market.

Dark Shopping District (Black Market)

Well, this place doesn't look too bad.

Let's stop by the local Peace Diner to get some info.

Strange Atmosphere
Bar Attacked by Harem Queen

This stale air... Smells like the windows here haven't been opened for a month.

Pink-afroed man: ...Yesss! A straight!
Red-afroed man: We must look sad to you, huh? Yep... The Harem Queen's our only salvation! ...Hah! Full house!
Orange-afroed woman: Teeheee... I'm what you'll end up as. You'll understand sooner or later!
Afroed drunk: Huhhh...? Are you guysh from outshide? Pishes me off... I remember now... I remember the outshide... Waaaah! Nrrrrgh... Wanna go outshide...

We share a fate... What's the use of this bickering? None so long as we loyally serve our Harem Queen!

This must be what that brat referred to. It seems we've been locked in again.
I wonder what this Harem Queen is like...
"Harem Queen"? Heh... funny stuff.
Orange-afroed woman: You're not going to wear moles? Wearing moles like the Queen's is all the rage now.
Downcast woman: A labyrinth of sadness forgotten in the oubliette of time... Only alcohol dulls my suffering. Dammit... that fricking bitch! She took all the decent-looking men! I wanna go to the harem too!
Pink-afroed man: You wanna meet the Harem Queen? The entrance is by the casino, but I warn you: you don't wanna piss her off.
Red-afroed man: I'll tell you one thing. Whatever you do, say nice things about the Queen's painting. If you don't...
Afroed drunk: *urrrrp* Yer painting'sh aweshome, Queen... Can I go home now?

Such is the decree of the Harem Queen, this market's mistress. You must make every effort to curry the Queen's favor.
Let's go to the palace. We gotta hurry, man! We don't have any time to waste playing along with this Queen's stupid rules.
Masao's right. Let's go meet this Queen! We can ask her to let us out of here.

So it's off to the Queen's palace we go. Because if we don't...

Tactless Ogre, can you start off by saying [Name]: for the persona's?
Cuz unless I'm suddenly blind, those images dont have the persona names on them, and it drives me crazy not knowing the name at the start and it'd help with formatting if this gets linked to in the OP.

So about revelations, was everything translated horribly or was it still full of random japanese words even after low effort recoloring of all the characters?

The first group (called Persona Pitstop), has been linked in the OP and includes names as well as additional mythological information on the Personas. For the latest post, the Personas in order are Aonbarr, Cu Chulainn, Macha, and Hathor.

So, Revelations. I'm going to talk more in-depth about it at the end of the first route, but yes, Revelations took all the Japanese stuff and threw it out the window. Almost everyone got a name change, including most Personas (such as Maso becoming Maria or Seimen Kongou becoming Starion) and a number of demons. The quality of the translation could be poor at times (such as the infamous "No, you're stupid!" or "You're face looks flushed and upset"), and at times outright changed things - for example, instead of being in the hospital for an illness, Maki (or Mary) was in the hospital for "minor mental delusions." However, it's not the absolute worst translation out there, and apparently the mess of a localization caused Atlus rethink their strategy when it came to localizing Japanese games, so good came out of it.

Update 11 - Boy problems

Since we're trapped inside the Black Market, why not see what wares they have for sale?

One of the best things about this particular location is that its Sennen Mannen-Do doesn't just trade gems for spell tablets - they also just straight out sell spell tablets. You can easily get your hands on some nice high-level skills for Persona fusing if you've got enough cash. Not everyone in our party seems to appreciate the store, though.

This Sennen Mannen-Do is very weird...
...Is this place haunted?
I guess the Sennen Mannen-Do in this town doesn't sell sweets.
This market seems devoid of normal shops.
Customer: If I was a beautiful youth who looked like a stray dog, the Queen would've liked me! Then I could've kicked back at the palace instead of living in this dump.

Fine! I surrender! Here, Naoya, you sing along too!
This store's owned by the uncle of a friend of mine named Tadashi. Tadashi doesn't get along with Tamaki, this transfer student. He won't speak even one word to her.
Tadashi's uncle, huh? This place doesn't seem that different from our version.
Welcome to Satomi Tadashi! Feel free to call me "the Satser"!

The Yin&Yan in this market is sporting some, shall we say, interesting art.

It looks like those Nazca lines.
Tch, all they got is weapons. Not even a magazine rack...
I wonder if the day will come where our convenience stores sell weapons too.

Even the armor shop fits right into this crazy town.
A Queen, eh...? That reminds me, Aki said something about a "cute girl"...
We're going to see this Queen, huh? I hope she's not too scary...
Whatever's going on, we can't get anything done unless we find a way out.
Customer: Well, as long as we're all trapped in this market anyways... Might as well butter up the Queen and enjoy our stay!

A quick stop at the casino...

Hmm... It's necessary to enjoy oneself sometimes, I suppose.
All right! Get ready to be dazzled by my poker skills!
Um... Naoya... To tell the truth, I...
Customer: Sometimes I see a little girl in black at this market. I hate to think of a helpless little girl trapped here too...

And the last stop is the Velvet Room to fuse two new Personas.

First is Anubis, the Egyptian god of mummification who weighs the hearts of the dead to determine their final destination. He has Dark Verdict, the strongest Curse spell in the game, and I managed to get Tarukaja (buffs attack) on him as well.

Second is Vidofnir, a rooster who sits atop the Mímameior tree in Norse mythology whose crowing at dawn signifies the victory of light over darkness. He's a speedy demon who has a well-rounded set of Miracle, Wind, Ice, and Rush skills, and I threw the heavy Fire attack Agidyne on him.

As somebody in the Peace Diner said, the entrance to the Queen's palace is an inconspicuous door next to the casino.

Kama Palace
1000 Ri of Moles (Dungeon - Kama Palace)

And the Queen's palace... well, I'd hesitate to call it a "palace." More of a dungeon, really. There's been some confusion as to whether the palace's name is "Kama" or "Karma," but the Persona World Guidance book states that it's named Kama after the Hindu god of love.

Despite its namesake, this dungeon is anything but loving. Its main gimmick is that it's filled to the brim with pitfalls, located behind doors like the one in the picture above. It's also pretty big, with ten floors in total.

The floors themselves can span pretty wide, and are filled with dead ends. There is a an elevator, which helps if you forgot to bring items or skills that return you to the dungeon's entrance.

We finally meet some of the Harem Queen's harem all the way down in the 8th floor.

Strange Atmosphere
Generic BGM-A

What, Chisato Kasai's? I thought they said she went missing. Wait... Chisato's painting is here, and they're saying it's the Queen's...?
But why? Does this mean... Chisato is being held captive by the Harem Queen?

Young man: Our Queen is both talented and gorgeous! Her many moles only enhance her beauty! She once showed me a painting by someone she knew, and I retched at the sight!
It's a beautiful painting. It's just not really to my tastes...
This piece looks good at first glance, y'know? But that's not enough. I know it sounds corny, but I think heart is more important than technique! This is pretty, but where's the soul? I'm just not feelin' it.
I don't claim to understand art... But compared to Maki's work, this leaves me completely cold.
The Harem Queen must be pretty childish to decorate a room so tastelessly.

Another art gallery can be found on the 9th floor, with a different painting on display.

Young man: Our Queen is both talented and gorgeous! She's gotten more moles lately... Oh, but she's still beautiful!
I'm really nervous about this, Naoya.
When we get to this Queen, she's goin' down!
Yamaoka always told me to be proud of myself. He also said never to curry favor with those stronger than you.
You need something from me?

And one final gallery.

Young man: This is our Queen's fabulous painting. Our Queen's a great artist, and beautiful too. I'm not so bad-looking either, eh?
There's no way it's Chisato...!
We don't have time to waste, either!
Is she taunting us by trapping us here? Or is she buying time? If only I could deduce her intentions...
Worrying about crap we can't figure out won't get us anywhere! What we gotta do now is find this Queen.

At long last, ten floors underground, we reach the Queen's chambers.

Strange Atmosphere
Dead Line (Intro)

Same to Naoya, and the rest of you, too. Welcome to my palace.

Ch...Chisato! It really was you...!? No...!
...Knew it. Yo Naoya, did Chisato always have that many moles? Didn't she always used to brag about how clear her skin was?
C'mon, Chisato! There's an explanation for this, right? Is the real Queen threatening you? You're not really the enemy... That's a lie, isn't it?
You're such an idiot! Me, being threatened... utterly ridiculous. I'm here because I choose to be! Isn't this palace wonderful? An angel in black lent me a mirror that grants my every wish! All this... from my mirror.
An angel in black...

I mean, didn't she kidnap you?
That's what I thought at first. But that's not how it went. She was looking for someone who could use the mirror... It happened to be me.
...Okay. So you're the Queen. Isn't it about time to put an end to this? Let's go back together! Yosuke's hurt! He needs you, Chisato...
Yosuke... got hurt...?
...Y'know what, Maki? I don't need Yosuke anymore. I didn't really like him anyway.

Huh? What did you just say?
I don't like Yosuke. In fact, I never did.
That's a lie! You always bragged about what a wonderful boyfriend he was...
What, you still don't get it? Wow! You really are stupid! I started dating Yosuke because I knew you liked him! In the beginning, you know, he liked you better. And I couldn't allow that... I mean, I was the pretty one! I'm the one he should have gone for! So I made my move, and that feebleminded moron was powerless to resist.

Maki turns to face away from Chisato, hand held up to her face.

No... Why would you joke like this...?
It's not joke, Maki! It's the truth! My art was better than yours, and you got all the attention! But I hated you even before that! I was always prettier and more talented! Why are YOU the one everyone fawns over!?
So that's why you stole Yosuke... And why you forced people to praise your artwork.
.....? Wait, Chisato. You should be aware that this isn't the Maki you know.
Shut up! This has nothing to do with you! Just stay out of this! You must've been howling with laughter, right Maki? I bet you made fun of me behind my back, wearing that innocent face of yours! Well, I won't let you do it to me anymore! I'm much better than you now!
Sure... Thanks to the power that girl in black gave you. Right?
I said SHUT UP! Naoya... Isn't my painting wonderful? Everyone says so. They all say it's much better than Maki's trash!

Now I get why your paintings are so crappy! You're rotten through and through! A girl like you could never make real art! Quit fooling yourself into thinking you're an artist!
...What... did you say...?
You were so caught in the throes of envy over Maki, you never made a real effort. And this is where it brought you... Forcibly enslaving people.
You think this is you at your best? You're a Queen with no clothes! You're deluding yourself if you think their praise means anything. They only humor you out of terror!
...Me? A Queen with no clothes...?
You heard him, Chisato! I can't stand the way you hurt Maki because of your stupid complex! I'll say this as many times at it takes, so listen up!

I think you need to have another look! If you can't grasp my artwork, you're the ones who are wrong!

...Erusaer Tsymmom!

Strange Atmosphere
Bar Attacked by Harem Queen

I wonder if Chisato really meant what she said... Maybe she's being controlled? Hey, yeah! I bet that Aki girl is controlling her!
Mm... Chisato's eyes were clear. To me, at least, they didn't seem to be the eyes of one under someone's control.
Well, we won't get anywhere by staying here. We'll have to go see her again.

The most loving part of Kama Palace? You have to do it twice.

Pink-afroed man: That dumbstruck look of yours... Been to see the Queen, huh? Yeah, I can tell. If I was a handsome guy in the Queen's good books like you... I coulda lived in her palace.
Orange-afroed woman: ...I know how you feel, but you have to be an adult about this. Otherwise, you'll never survive this place.
I admit, I'm somewhat surprised, but maybe those were Chisato's true feelings.
I... I had no idea...
Maki... This must be a real shock for her.
I don't think it's so bad to be honest about what you want.

Says the guy who is constantly hiding his true intentions. Now then, before heading back into the palace, I stop by the Velvet Room to get new Personas.

First up is Azrael, the Islamic angel of death who carries a book where he inscribes and erases all those who are born and die. He's got both the Miracle skill Baikouha as well as the Curse skill Dark Verdict, and comes equipped with Tarukaja as well as the Fear-inducing Frenzy Song. I also throw the heavy Ice skill Bufudyne on him. Like Lilim, he's pretty drat convenient due to the fact that he nulls all elemental attacks.

The second Persona takes a little bit more prep work, but it's worth it.

Personas of the Fool Arcana are almost like a hidden Arcana - they can only be obtained through an event called fusion accidents. Fusion accidents have anywhere between a 1/256 to 20/256 chance of happening, depending on the type of Fusion used. Other than making Fool Personas, fusion accidents can also switch the Arcana, add a +5 to all stats, subtract a -5 from all stats, or cause the Persona to randomly inherit a skill from its one of its parent demons.

In the PSP version, there's a way to guarantee all sorts of fusion accidents. First, you have to save at an Agastya Tree in an area where enemies don't appear, and then completely turn the game off - just going back to the main menu won't work. After you do this, leave the Agastya Tree and walk a certain number of steps (anywhere from 6 to 1194, depending on what you want) and enter the Velvet Room. Voila! Instant fusion accident. It doesn't work with tablets or items, but you can still use gems.

Why go to all the trouble? Because Fool Personas are pretty darn good. They're strong against everything, have Best affinity with all characters, have low SP costs, and have nice skill sets. They also all have origins in Japanese history and folklore - Tenjiku Tokubei here is a famous 17th-century Japanese adventurer and writer. Though they're not shown here, his skills are: Sweet Trap (special physical damage), Quikka (inflicts Counter status), Mamagnara (medium Earth damage to all enemies), Makakaja (buffs magic), Samarecarm (revives one party member with full HP), and Fire Breath (medium Fire damage).

With all that done, it's time to back into the demon's lair. Luckily for me, the dungeon remembers where you've walked before, so it's a bit easier to get back to the queen's chamber. The art galleries along the way also have new dialogue for everybody.

That stuff's only superficial... It isn't real.
So it was Chisato... But how did she set herself up as mistress of this market?
Chisato... What are you doin' on Aki's side? Why'd you abandon Yosuke...?
...Chisato...

...What's gotten into Chisato?
First she disappears, then Aki kidnaps her... and now she's the Harem Queen.
Better she found out now instead of going on thinking they were friends.

Dammit... All this crap about the palace and junk ain't funny!
She'd better hold a proper conversation with us this time.
You'll never survive in this world if you let little things like this get you. There's plenty of people out there going through worse poo poo than this.

Strange Atmosphere
Dead Line (Intro)

This mirror's great, but I hate how I get more moles every time I make a wish!
Chisato!

Chisato... Just end this already... I know now that your paintings are better. And... and your moles...
Shut up! Don't say things you don't even mean! You probably think I deserve these moles! But never mind that... I want to show you something, Naoya.

The camera pans to the left, and a curtain opens to reveal a piece of art.

Alright, Naoya. You saw my paintings in the gallery, right? Which did you like more? My masterpieces, or Maki's filth smeared on a canvas?
Maki's painting is a million drat times better than yours!
I don't think I asked you, monkey!

Turn these monkeys into stone! Erusaer Tsymmom!

With a puff of smoke, Mark, Nanjo, and Reiji's bodies begin to turn to stone from the feet up.

Whoa!
Ngh!
......!

Aaahahahahaha! Turn to stone, all of you! Ack...!

Turning them to stone was too nice... I should've made them suffer more! I'll give you, and only you, one last chance, Naoya...
Which is better? My breathtaking painting, or Maki's piece? And I want an honest answer!

You want a completely honest answer? You may not like it, but it's what you asked for.

Ngh...!

The stone encroaches further and further up, until all three of them are completely immobile.

I'll return this humiliation tenfold... You can turn to stone like the rest!

BLACK KID (Aki's Theme)

Hey Queen, if you beat these guys up, I'll fix your face back to normal!
Really!? All right... I'll do it! If that's what Miss Angel wants, then the plan has changed.

Confrontation

Mirror, mirror, now's the hour: Give to me your strongest power! Erusaer Tsymmom!

:siren: Boss - Harem Queen :siren:

Bloody Destiny
Dead Line (Mid-Boss Battle)

Chisato faces away from us, knees buckling.

Her arms reach around to the back of her head, gently grabbing onto her hair.

She pulls her hair back, revealing two bright beady eyes and a bright red smile.

Harem Queen: Now hurry up and die!
Please, Chisato! Stop! If you insist on hurting everyone, I... I... I'll have to fight you!
Harem Queen: Tchahahahaaaaa! That terrified face! That's the face! That's it! God, I LOVE it!

It's just Maki and Naoya for this battle. Despite being down three party members, the Harem Queen isn't too tough. She has 1240 HP, only about 100 more HP than Yog-Sothoth Jr. She can use Dia to heal for about 150 HP and can also use Sukukaja to increase her agility and make her harder to hit.

She can use Freila to hit an area for medium Nuclear damage, an element which she absorbs. She can also attempt to turn us into stone herself using Petra Eyes.

Her last skill is Infinite Spiral, a medium-strength whip attack that she uses her hair for.

Her weakness is Ice, likely a nod to the fact that Maki's starting Persona specializes in Ice. Other than that, she's also vulnerable to Wind, Tech, Rush, and Gun.

BLACK KID (Aki's Theme)

If you can't win, I'm not gonna fix your face! Though I was never gonna do that anyway! Pbbbbt!
Huh? Hey, wait... What do you mean!?
Daddy called you a "ginnee pig" and a "useless pon"! He said, "Even if Chisato loses, she's not worth our trouble." So you can have fun staying that way as long as you live! Bye-bye!

Overcoming Sadness
Remembrance (Maki's Theme - Sad)

And when we do, we'll make her put your face back the way it was!
Maki... You're lying! Don't feed me that crap! I know you think I deserve all this!
I'm not lying, Chisato. I still like you... even now.

Yep! You're energetic, beautiful, fashionable, and self-possessed. I can tell what Yosuke sees in you.
No! I'm... sure Yosuke still has a thing for you, Maki. ...I'm sorry. I was so jealous of you, Maki. You say I'm self-possessed, but it's just an act.
The real me is helpless. I have to act out and look pretty or everyone will ignore me... That's why I envied you. You just had to be yourself, and everyone loved you.
Chisato...
Yosuke will hate me now. Then, you and him will... Yosuke...
Ohhhh, you're so stubborn! Deep down, you really like Yosuke. But you don't have to worry about me getting in the way. See...

...What happened to your face!? Did you get hurt!?

Umm, what happened was, Aki put a curse on her, and...

Theme of Nemurin's Love

Maki! Are you trying to cover for me? No... Not this time!

Chisato turns to face Yosuke, looking him straight in the eyes.

I did terrible things... I was so cruel to Maki. This is my punishment!
Chisato...!
I don't deserve you, Yosuke! I'm a terrible person... Even the face I was so proud of shows it. If people see you with me, they'll laugh at you, too. That's why it's okay if you want Maki instead! You always liked her, right?

Yeah, I did like Maki... But that was in the past. I like you now, Chisato! Argh, listen to me...! This is so embarrassing! C'mon, let's go.
But... these moles will never come off, you know... You don't care if your friends laugh at us...?
Let 'em laugh! See if I care! You said you're a bad person? Well, I'm not saint, either. Don't worry about it. Just be honest with me, like you were a second ago.
I'm your boyfriend, Chisato... I don't care what you look like, as long as you're you. I love you, Chisato!

With one big crack, the mirror shatters and litters the floor with glass shards.

And I'm not talking about my face. I... always thought you still liked Maki, Yosuke. Thanks...

Chisato's face isn't the only thing back to normal - one by one, the rest of the party is cured of their ailment.

Whoa! Yosuke!? Hey... did your moles fall off, Chisato?
Hrm... It seems things moved quickly while I wasn't watching.
Yosuke...? Hm. I see Chisato's back to normal, too.

After stretching their bodies, everybody returns to the center of the room to talk.

Like you said, deep down, I like Yosuke. I'd hope you could forgive me... But I doubt it. I did want us to be friends again, though...
Oh, come on! What's to forgive? You're still my best friend, Chisato. I'm really happy for you!
It seems Aki escaped... Chisato, do you know anything about a man named Kandori? He's in league with Aki.
I don't know anyone named Kandori... But you know, that girl said that she lives in a castle.

It's not all that surprising. Though still a child, Aki's powers are immense. Making a castle would be easy.
Alright, then that's our next goal. Let's find that castle!
Oh, I forgot to tell you, Chisato, but that Maki isn't the Maki we know.
Huh?

Following a short explanation from the party...

Is it right for me to be so blessed while Maki suffers...?
I'm sorry I was the cause of so much trouble for everyone. If I'd been a little more reliable, this wouldn't have happened. Sorry, guys.

And we're kicked out of the room and forced to walk back out of Kama Palace ourselves. Thanks, you two!

__________________________________

But what if...?

So, what happens if you say you like Chisato's paintings better?

The rest of the party is immediately freed from their stone prison.

Well, Maki? What now!? He chose mine!
.........
Fortunately, we weren't turned all the way...

I'm sorry, Miss Angel. I just didn't want any more moles...
Well... how about this? Beat them, and I'll put your face back to normal!
Really!? All right... I'll do it!

Mirror, mirror, now's the hour: Give to me your strongest power! Erusaer Tsymmom!

The battle with the Harem Queen is the exact same, except we now have a full party and Chisato has double the health at 2850 HP. Nothing new, so no video.

Did you get Persona 5'd?

Haha yeah, sorry for not saying anything. Persona 5 plus my computer acting up means I haven't had time to be working on recording and transcribing. If I'm not burned out on Persona, hopefully the next update will come sometime this week. I hope everyone who got it is enjoying P5!

I too have been Persona 5'd (With a mild case of Shovel Knight to boot), but it didn't stop me from binge reading this when I saw the thread because I've always been interested in this game.

It definitely seems to show its age a bit, but it seems like a good starting point for the series. It's sorta giving off more of a mainline SMT vibe than a modern Persona one so far, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd also like to submit a formal request to Atlus to add DLC for the new game that brings back Nanjo's "#1" necktie/bib/scarf, because it's the funniest poo poo.

Definitely interested in keeping up with this one, keep up the good work.

I'm really surprised Atlus didn't do more specialized outfits for everybody in the Persona DLC for P5, I think it would've been a lot of fun to match up different characters. An easy example would be Ann and Ayase, since both have blonde twintails and they share a weapon of choice.

Alright, onto business. First, a new update is going to be dropping in a second. It might be a bit longer than usual, but it's been awhile so I think it's okay to go a bit long. Second, the channel I was using for PS1 music had those videos taken down, so I'm using a different channel now. When I'm less lazy, I'll get around to changing the links in previous updates. If worst comes to worst then I'll probably upload music onto LPix, but for now I want to just use YouTube.

Update 12 - Storming the castle

Now that the Harem Queen has been dethroned, the denizens of the Black Market are freed from her trap. We stop by the Peace Diner for one quick chat.

Red-afroed man: I guess in the end, the Queen just had no self-confidence. Now that I think about it, I kinda feel sorry for her.
Pink-afroed man: That junky old mansion in the southeast? I heard it's connected to another world.
Orange-afroed woman: Whew! Goodbye moles, and good riddance! I didn't look very good with them.
Afroed drunk: The Queen'sh painting ish no better than a kid'sh scribble! Servesh her right!
Downcast woman: Even if the stopped clock starts again... My suffering continues unabated... Dammit... that fricking witch! She went and made a harem when she had a drat boyfriend all along!
Did you think I was in shock? Well, I think I can really hit it off with Chisato now...
Yosuke wasn't such a bad guy after all.
So he remains true even after seeing that side of her? Heh, that's love, I suppose.
Kind of an absurd outcome... But it's nice for things to end that way now and then.

Our party is free to come and go as we please as well, which means we can finally head north.

The only building in the 3rd ward is Aki's fortress - Mana Castle.

BLACK KID (Aki's Theme)

Pbbbbbt! You can't get in from here! If the one in the forest was here, yeah, but she's too much of a scaredy cat. That's how come no one can stop me and my Daddy!

Aki fiddles with the nearby pedestal before the door opens and she takes her leave.

Ugh! Sheesh... she got away again.
......

Hey Nanjo, quit starin' into space! Don't you have a plan or somethin'?

Nanjo steps forward to examine the pedestal.

The forest... it must be the one on the west side. It was a flower garden once... But now they call it the Lost Forest.
Oh well. Guess we'll go back... We gotta find whoever that brat was talking about.

Whoa there, Reiji. This isn't something you can just smash like that. You sure lose it when Kandori's involved. Well, I'm not gonna ask... But man, you don't have to carry whatever it is all by yourself.
......
Masao's right, Reiji. We're all in this together, after all.
...I have no reason to play nice. "All in this together"? You disgust me. And you, Masao? You disgust me most of all.

It's cool, Maki. Get disgusted or don't, dude, but we have to go back together for now. 'Cause we're all after the same thing. C'mon, Naoya, let's go.

Boys are so complicated. Masao's getting along with Reiji... I think.
I'm surprised he stood there and took that from Masao. Heh... He must sense another like himself. Feral beasts can do that, I suppose.
Huh? Am I feeling okay? What are you talking about...?

With our destination set, we dip down back into the subway real quick...

There's something that's been nagging at me, but... No. There's no proof. I must be mistaken.
There's something I've gotta force Kandori to apologize for...

...and head back to the other side of town.

In our world, this was a police station.
This world must have amazing security prior to this incident. The police simply don't exist here.
...You don't need to talk to me. Hurry and go.

Lost Forest
Night Cry of the Forest (Dungeon - Lost Forest)

The Lost Forest is probably named for the fact that it's a big ol' maze with a few tricks up its sleeves.

It has the moving panels that first showed up in the subway and it adds in rotating panels. These panels, as their name implies, will rotate you to the right or left and send you in a different direction from where you were trying to get to. If you walk into them from the correct direction then you'll eventually get to where you need to be.

The Lost Forest also ramps it up with treasure traps - cute, but deadly. Some of them are hiding goodies behind the traps, but most of them aren't.

After a long trek through the forest, the party stumbles upon the most fitting of buildings.

BLACK KID (Aki's Theme)
Mai's Theme

Hey, isn't that the ghost who showed up at the Historical Society? Is she friends with that brat in black!?

Yeah, I'd probably cry too if I ran into somebody with Mark's sense of fashion.

*sniffle* Yes...
Whoa...! She has a half-moon-shaped compact! It looks a lot like mine...
That must be the castle's key. But who are these children...?
Hey Mai, you know that girl Aki? Is she a friend of yours?
No! She's not my friend! She's Mai...

What!? What does that mean?
*sniffle* I was lonely... That's when Kandori came. Then she came out of me and left with Kandori. She knows Kandori isn't our real Daddy...
Hm... So she's a separate personality that split off... What is that compact?
It's my treasure. It grants wishes.

Yes. This little girl was this world's creator.

drat Nanjo, don't talk like you know everything. I saw that exclamation point above your head a second ago.

Can't you use the compact to catch Aki and Kandori, or send everyone home?
No... Aki took half of it. I know she's using the other half to do mean things... My wishes just get canceled out. That's how come I'm hiding here.
But we can't get to Kandori without it. Can't we borrow it for a while?
No! You can't! That's what Kandori wants!
Mai... You shouldn't hide like this.
Waaah... *sniffle* Why not...? Won't I be safe if I hide here?

Like many RPGs, Persona 1 experimented with the concept of multiple endings, which really just means one good "true" ending and one bad ending. This sequence of questions that Mai gives us is what determines the ending. I'll obviously be going for the good ending first, but we'll revisit the other ending at a later time.

Naoya is right. Hiding from your problems won't solve them. You have to meet them head on!
*sniffle* Why...? Why are you all trying so hard?

Gaaaah! We don't have time for this philosophical crap! We gotta get back to our world and save someone. C'mon, please let us borrow that thing! From the looks of it, she's...
She's... already dead?
H-Hell no! She's alive for sure! Look, anyway...
What are you all living for? Isn't... Isn't it painful?
What...?
Uh...
...
...
What about you, mister? What are you living for?

Naoya is right. There is sweetness in life.
Okay... Just for you... I'll let you borrow my compact.

Let's wish right now for it to send us to Kandori!
You can't. Only I can use it. And the castle is Aki's home, so my wishes won't work on it.
Ugh... I knew it seemed too good to be true. Oh well, let's hoof it back to the castle, then.

Can I see that compact, Naoya? Wow... It's only half of the whole thing, but it's the same as mine. Though mine doesn't have a mirror like this one.
Kandori... How does acquiring that compact play into his schemes...?
...That was one hell of an answer.
Well, wishes are supposed to be things you grant for yourself, after all. It would be boring if everything all went the way you wanted it to.

As Mark suggests, the party leaves the forest and "hoofs it" back over to Mana Castle.

Strange Atmosphere
Number 1 (Nanjo's Theme)

Let's try fitting that compact half into the pedestal.
Wait a second, Naoya...
'Sup, Nanjo?
...It's nothing. Carry on.
Man, you've always been weird, but it's really ramped up lately. You've been acting funny for a while now.
...Don't worry about it.
Heh! You heard him, Naoya. Go right ahead.

We might as well get everyone else's opinion first.

This is dirty pool, Kandori...
Kandori's not going anywhere. He'll get what's coming to him in the end.
Hurry up, man. Just put that compact into the pedestal.

Alright, alright, give the guy a second.

Good news, the door opens up. Bad news, we just lost Mai's compact half.

I'm sure Kandori is laughing himself hoarse right now.

The group turns to face Nanjo, waiting for his words of wisdom.

Kandori wanted that compact. Since Mai wouldn't come out, he needed someone to get it and bring it to him. We were his patsies.
What? That scumbag! Wait, if you knew, why didn't you tell us!?
Because it's still the only way to get to him.
Why, though?
If he just needed the compact, why would he let us in?

I hate looking like an idiot... Fine, then! We'll play along! Let's go, Naoya!
We had no choice but to dance according to his tune. A dirty trick, but one well played.
Now what do we do!? We have to get Mai's compact back!
He's a devil, just like his father...

Mana Castle
Dungeon - Mana Castle

Mana Castle is rather classy looking for a place conjured up by a kid. Knowing what kind of girl Aki is, I might have expected something a little different.

The only real point of interest is that dark zones return, though at a larger scale than the one at SEBEC's underground lab.

When people think "castle," sprawling hallways and hidden passages probably come to mind, and I guess that includes Aki as well.

And at the very top of the castle sits the throne room.

Strange Atmosphere
Stillness Before (Theme of Kandori - Silence)

If you didn't pick Reiji as your team member, you'd find him beaten and laying on the ground near Kandori's feet. Dude wasn't kidding about taking Kandori down.

Don't be so coarse with your brother's name. Watch your tongue... You may be the child of Father's mistress, but Kandori blood flows in you.
...But what's the use? A stray bitch will breed stray dogs.

Shut up! My name's Kido! Reiji Kido! This is for my mother--the woman your dad used and threw away like a dirty rag! This wound will never forget!
Hmph... Nonsense. Take your grievance up with my father's grave.
Kandori!
What a bothersome dog... Muzzle him, Aki.
Okay, Daddy! Erusaer Tsymmom!

Aki raises her compact high and sends a flash of lightning shooting through Reiji, bringing him to his knees.

Reiji!

Is that Mai's compact!?
Hmh. Youth oft destroys itself... A common failing of headstrong boys.
Aki! He's not your Daddy. Don't you know that!? Give that compact back!
Pbbbbbbt! You can't hurt Daddy!

You snake... What's your plan for the compact!?
Show them, Aki.
Okay, Daddy! Erusaer Tsymmom!

It's my ambition given shape... Now witness its power!

:siren: Scene - Deva Yuga's Formation :siren:

Confrontation
God Taker (Theme of Kandori - Pathos)

That's right. It's my new castle... I call it Deva Yuga. A worthy name for something that will usher in a new, shining era...

So, "Deva Yuga." In Hinduism, Deva is the word used for heavenly or divine beings or anything of excellence, and is another word used to describe deities. Hinduism also gives us yugas, which are eras within a four age cycle. A literal interpretation of the name Kandori picked would be something like "Era of God" or "Divine Era."

Ngh... You little...!
Kandori, you devil...
I can't believe you did that...

How exquisite... It's no mere compact. You've all seen its majestic power! I've acquired the power to make my desires reality... Power over the dimensions without need for the Deva System!
Yes... I'm starting to see now. The compacts and the Deva System were only laying the groundwork. Now...
I will become a god on Earth. And a god has only one duty... To wield the rod of judgement upon the wayward human race!
I get it... You're planning on annihilating humanity...
Like hell!
I won't allow it, Kandori!
Such senseless defiance...

With a flick of the wrist, Kandori takes matters into his own hands and sends lightning crashing down onto Mark and Nanjo.

I'll now return to the real world. Do you despise me? If so, then follow me there... after defeating this!

Ngh...
Y-You son of a...
Objects of one's desire cannot be easily obtained. But the joy of overcoming obstacles to obtain them is the highest bliss...

Kandori disappears, taking Aki and the mirror with him.

Saurva: It is showtime! I'll make you dance... A dance of death!

:siren: Boss - Saurva :siren:

Bloody Destiny
Dead Line (Mid-Boss Battle)

Saurva: I'll make you eat those words!

Our opponent this time is Saurva, a Zoroastrian Daeva who is the arch-demon of oppression that wages eternal war with Khshathra. Thanks to Kandori's dirty tricks, three of our party members start the battle with their HP cut down.

His main attacks are the Earth skills Magnara (one target) and Mamagnara (multiple targets), so Personas that null Earth or all elements are an easy way to avoid damage.

He can also attempt to mute characters with the skill Makajam. Characters who are muted may fail to invoke their Personas.

The last skill Saurva's got going for him is the heavy Arrow attack Arrow Volley. This can be quite deadly, especially if you're using Personas that null elements but are weak to physical skills.

Taking care of him is pretty simple, as he's weak to Fire, Ice, and Wind. Nanjo boosts everyone's magic power with Makakaja, causing even more damage and taking down Saurva without a hitch.

If we don't hurry and catch that scumbag, things are gonna get out of hand!
There must be a way! That's the kind of bastard he is! He's still toying with us. I'm not giving up until my hands are around that bastard's neck!
Reiji's right. There must be some way... Heh. For once, we're in agreement.
...Yeah.
Maybe there... The place where there were rumors of people being spirited away.
The haunted mansion! I used to sneak in there all the time when I was a kid. Ma would get so mad...
It's in the same place here as SEBEC is in our world... It's certainly possible.
Maki... It's our world's problem now. You can go back home.

I like this town! I like all of you! I like... me! And I can't just stay quiet and watch the things I like be destroyed! It's just not something I would do!
The things we like, huh...? Looks like no one has any more complaints. Let's get to the haunted mansion ASAP, Naoya!

"ASAP" means we can still stop to chat with everyone, right?

I'm Reiji Kido, dammit!
Heh... "In the lexicon of youth, there is no such word as 'fail.'" It may be a cheesy quote, but I think I'll take a shot at believing it.

...Worry about yourself first.
Heh! That was nothin'. No way I'm goin' down before you do.
You got one hell of a mouth... Better not forget those words.
You know it. Looks like Reiji's finally starting to come out of his shell.

Our heroes, beaten down by the enemy, grow closer and stronger. What awaits them at the haunted mansion, and will they be able to catch Kandori...? Find out next time on Persona!

Update 13 - Family reunion

The haunted mansion, huh? I remember sneaking in there when I was a kid... Wait... huh...? Who was it that used to yell at me for doing that?
You think this is the time for a chat!? We need to go and nail that bastard!
Reiji must be pretty pissed.
...No, that's not it. But if I think of it another way... No, wait... Hm? Sorry, but I'm busy now.

Before we head on over there, I make a quick stop at the Velvet Room to unload some cards.

First is Marduk, a Mesopotamian god who was the patron deity of Babylon. Other than Fire and Sword attacks, Marduk can also repel all physical attacks for one turn by using Tetrakarn.

The other Persona is Yatagarasu, a mythical three-legged crow whose appearance signifies divine intervention in human affairs. His specialty is Rush and Earth skills.

Now then, the rumored haunted mansion is located near the bottom of Mikage-cho's second ward, its atmosphere heightened by the mysterious smog and the ruined road.

Haunted Mansion
Dungeon - House

The inside is spookier than ever, thanks to the music. Our heroes travel through the dingy halls filled with tattered curtains and grimy walls.

This dungeon's main gimmick is dark areas, because what's more frightening than being completely enveloped in pitch black?

The mansion isn't completely abandoned, as some of Kandori's scientists can be found within the rooms.

Scientist: Only Dr. Nicholai realized Kandori's true nature... Well, I suppose it's too late now... But we should have stopped Kandori by any means available while we could.
Scientist: The dimensional passage on the third floor was unstable... If we don't hurry, it could become completely unusable!
Come to think of it... The old man who made the machine is the only one who owned up to what he did.
Kandori... What's his scheme...!?
We need to hurry, or you won't be able to go back!
Don't any of these people regret what they've done?

Scientist: The trouble is, we can't go into the room with the machine that will get us home. Could you please take a look for us?
Scientist: Dammit! Kandori used us for our research and then left us here!
These guys seem like they're in the same boast as you, Naoya.

Scientist: The others say ghosts don't exist, but none of them will actually go in...
Rumor has it that a woman's ghost haunts this place.
Scientists who are scared of ghosts? Kandori sure can pick 'em...
Sure, it's a haunted house... But I didn't think it had a real ghost!

I think it's a little too late to be surprised by ghosts, Mark.

On the third and final floor, we run into a large double door. Our party pauses before opening it, as an eerie noise can be heard emanating from the other side.

Hey Naoya, you hear somethin'?

Woman's voice: Maki... Where are you, Maki...?
Did you just hear it say "Maki"? Hmm... it sounded rather like Maki's mother to me.
I've been telling you, I don't have a mom!
Woman's voice: Maki...? Is that you, Maki? Come here...
The door doesn't seem locked... What should we do, Naoya? It may be a trap. Should we go in?

Oh, so now you're worried about traps? You were happy to let us put the compact in the pedestal last update. It's now or never, so we're bustin' in!

Confrontation
Encounter

Hariti: Oh, Maki, I finally found you. You're safe...
That voice... There's no mistaking it. It's Maki's mother...!
Hariti: I've been looking for you all this time... Please come to me, Maki.

Maki takes a few cautious steps towards the demon as everyone else watches on.

But that voice... That's Maki's mom, I'm dead sure... Isn't it? I don't know why she'd look like that, but what if it really is her mom...? Put your weapon away, Naoya!
......

Thanks for the input, Nanjo. Always glad to hear from ya.

For now, we should lower our weapons.

Daily Life
Remembrance (Maki's Theme - Sadness)

Oh, it's the haunted mansion. I was just having a dream about this place...
See? Maki's mom doesn't exist in this world, so... This has to be her! But what's she doing here...? You okay, lady?

Maki used to get lost at this haunted mansion often when she was little... I'm used to look for her here. I was just dreaming about those days... I was searching for her in this huge mansion, and I heard Maki call to me... I don't remember anything after that.
Um, Miss? I'm... not your real child after all...
What...?
Allow me to explain.

One explanation later...

But why don't I exist here...?

The dimensional passageway at the back of the room flickers and sputters, catching Maki's attention.

I'm sorry, lady, but we have to chase down Kandori.
Alright. Just give me one moment!

The group huddles around the machine as Setsuko begins to fiddle with it.

Someone has to stay here and operate the machine.
What? No...! We can't leave anyone here!
I'll do it! Don't worry... Go ahead on your own. Though I'd be grateful if you came to get me when this is all over with.
Miss...
Yes? Speak quickly... There isn't much time.
I... don't have a mother... But if I did... I'd hope for one as kind and caring as you...

Yes... Please do. Thank you...
.....

Space
Rage (Reiji's Theme)

Hurgh... I feel sick. You must be tougher than you look, Naoya...
*cough* Probably because it was a forced teleportation. Really, we should count ourselves lucky we came through in one piece.

Reiji is the first to stumble back onto his feet.

Heh... Might wanna look in a mirror, Reiji. You're blue as a zombie.
Heh. If you can make jokes about it, you'll be fine. Let's get back on track.
Can you stand up, Maki?
Ngh...

Look, Naoya, it's that scientist.

Hey, the old dude survived!
Something seems weird about him, though.
Urrgh... Let judgement fall upon the foolish humans! Mankind needs no future!

Confrontation
Theme of Kandori - Ambition

Let judgement fall on mankind! Let the music of destruction ring out!
Dude, what's gotten into you!? C'mon, why're you talking like Kandori?

In fact, humans around the world already share my desire for annihilation.

What the hell are you talking about!?
You madman... Have you brainwashed the entire globe with that mirror!?
Everyone following a unified ideology... Doesn't it sound wonderful?

That's preposterous!
All I need to do now is give the order for them to kill each other... And everything will be over. A fitting end for a species of fools. Nothing else will be hurt. Only mankind will be wiped from this planet.
But why!? Why do you want to do this to people!?
Hah... That sounds rather unlike you... Maki Sonomura.

The mirror's power affects all. You children are no exception. Can you still reach me where I await? Hahah...

Space

Kandori disappears just as suddenly as he appeared, his form fading out of Reiji's fists.

With Kandori gone, Naoya takes a moment to check in with everybody.

Now is the time for the final judgement! Why was mankind created? Without an answer to that question, the infection must be cleansed!
That jerk... I can't believe he's gonna go through with this!
So that's why... It's inconceivable...
How does Kandori know me...!?
There's no telling what dirty tricks that bastard has in store. Be careful.

Next update, the party will descend into the depths of Deva Yuga.

But what if...?

What happens if you choose to fight Hariti instead?

:siren: Boss - Hariti :siren:

Bloody Destiny
Dead Line (Mid-Boss Battle)

H-Hey! Isn't this really Maki's mom?
Here it comes!

The party is forced into a battle with Hariti. Known as both a goddess and demon, Hariti satiated her own children's hunger by abducting and killing the children of others. However, thanks to a message from Buddha, she changed her ways and vowed to protect all children.

Hariti's element of choice is Blast, able to use a multi-target heavy target skill.

Her two ailment-inducing skills are Shibaboo (pictured above) and Decover. Shibaboo can inflict Bind to stop people in their tracks, and Decover makes it impossible to recover HP for three turns.

Her last two attacks are physical, the first being the heavy Thrown skill Sonic Bullet.

The other skill is Rainbow Strike, a Special Physical attack.

Maki doesn't join us for the battle, but Hariti still goes down easily without the extra manpower or healing power. She absorbs Wind, but is weak to Fire, Ice, and Earth. After the battle, the scene continues on the same way it does if you choose to lower your weapons.

Sorry for the wait, a malfunctioning computer + finals + terrible cold meant no time to play and edit, but I'm back so expect an update tonight!

I started playing along at home, and I gotta ask: how on earth did you get your party to level 20+ before even going to the SEBEC building? I'm assuming the answer is "a bunch of grinding" because I'm almost done with SEBEC and my highest-leveled party member (Maki) is at 16. I'm playing on Beginner though, so maybe my encounter rate is lower and I'm getting less EXP as a result?

Like Eclectic explained, the fact that a party member joining means everybody gets to the same level is a very good way to game the system and get easy EXP. There was some grinding, too, of course.

By the way, as a coincidence, I'm also playing this for the first time just this week (I recently played through P3 for the first time and decided to try some other games in the series), and the fusion charts I've seen online keep trying to tell me that Wilder+Night gets a blue fusion for Emperor, but I've tried every possible combination of available Nights and Wilders, and every single one of them fuses into Sun. The only blue combination seems to be Yoma and Jaki, which includes a stat-down. Am I going to have to settle for that, or does someone know of a normal blue fusion that will work? I'm just glad Google tossed up this thread in my search results.

I have no idea why the charts would tell you Wilder + Night gives you Emperor, since the fusion chart from the game's manual clearly shows it giving you a Sun result. Anyway, the combo for a blue Emperor fusion that doesn't give you a stat down is Spirit + Wilder. Seems that GameFAQs doesn't have anything in the way of fusion charts, so perhaps that's something I should submit.
