going by Scott Benson's Twitter and also an interview with him, it sounds like the idea he was going for was that the real problem with the world is not individuals, but capitalism and its dupes, and some if not all of the game's problems stem from that. For example, Mae needs mental healthcare, but she lives in Shitpit, Pennsylvania where there's no money and the only doctor in town is on the take from Big Journal, so she barely has the opportunity to be a net positive force in the world. And then we've got the giant, possibly sentient hole in the ground, which is apparently meant to turn Lovecraft's metaphors from the white supremacist fear of marginalization to a criticism of necropolitics. I liked that. The cult stuff gets some flak, but I think the game makes it work. But anyway there are LPers who aren't socialists but still enjoyed the game (Woolie from Best Friends Play, Liam from Liam), so that's just one way of reading NITW. "How ACAB Cat and Her Weird Friends Defeated a Big Hole." Shoplifting as a cure for existential dread. When the whole town gets hosed up on mine gas and invents a cult, the only people who can stop it are the local failures. "gently caress the Rust Belt: The Musical." "If Animals Took Over They Wouldn't Do Much Better."

Lori sequel about making horror movies, except as you play it, you realize the whole game is a scorching indictment of fascism and cops. The climax of the game is a race to prevent Sheriff Braun from completing the sacrificial ritual at the abandoned glass factory to resurrect J. H. Blair and his dark army of union-busting demons. Sheriff Braun's head is crushed in a trash compactor, and it's left open-ended whether the ritual would have worked, though Germ and Scamz both say they definitely saw something. The game ends with Lori clicking the button to upload her completed horror movie on the internet, and you can see has another tab open for an application to Ham Panther, a wordless resolution to the subplot where Lori is terrified of having to give up on her dreams of being an indie horror film director to be a cashier or whatever.
