An uncountable number, to be sure.
I am looking forward to seeing how much VFD butchered the setting of this in order to retroactively fit it into their timeline.

Shhh... don't wake up the sleeping lion :3:

This reminds me, I have a 7th Dragon playthrough to go back to. Maybe I'll play along with the LP!

Name: Haru
Class: Samurai
Portrait: 1

Bio: Life as a gardener was simple for Haru. Sure, the old mistress is harsh and rude, and her mansion is a chore to weed out, but he gets a roof to sleep under, regular meals and a decent allowance. So he keeps wearing a smile and cheery demeanor even though the mistress chews on him daily, because he's one to see silver linings. All things considered, he's lucked out.

One day, though, these ominous-looking flowers started appearing everywhere in the mansion, and when Haru peeked out the walls, he could see the fields outside swarming with them too. As luck would have it, the mistress returned from her vacation on that same day, and she was furious. She screamed at Haru to get rid of them. Not just the ones inside the mansion - she doesn't want to see them when on her way to town, when she looks out the window, or when she takes a walk anywhere. "And don't come back until every single one of those flowers out there is gone!"

Well, he's known better by now than to question her unreasonable demands, Haru sighed inwardly. And hey, on the bright side, that'sa a couple of days, maybe, without the mistress shouting in his ears. It's obvious there's no way he could do this on his own, though. So he packed up some essentials, crafted a makeshift weapon out of his gardening shears for self-protection, and made his way to Kazan. It's a big city, someone there's probably crazy enough to help him weed out a continent.

Hope I didn't jump the gun too much with the flowers? Anyway, I like Odyssey for a guild name. And yeah, you need some more meatshields in there, I think, so voting for Samurai, Knight, Fighter.

"Questionable" design decisions don't even begin to cover this game. Somehow it manages to have a decent core-experience anyways (with either the USA-patch or using the secret-code accessory).

This game was released after Etrian Odyssey, but manages to be even less polished. Luckily, there still manages to be incredibly cheesy party compositions to play around with despite the straightforward class designs, but I'll wait until Fetus covers them to elaborate.

Name: Zenie (It's short for Zenie van der Gil, apparently)
Class: Healer

Zenie was a sheltered rich girl (read: "oh~hohohoho~!") whose primary access to the world in her high tower was via fine literature (read: comic books), and who longed for nothing more than a life of quiet contemplation of the good (read: aimless hedonism). Unfortunately for her, after she came of age, testing revealed her innate aptitude for healing magic, and her town of origin, being a weird little theocracy, had a rule that anyone gifted in magical medicine -- as a favored child of the divine -- must embark on a pilgrimage of holy self-discovery. Thrown out on her rear end with an ascetic's rags and begging bowl, Zenie has resolved to train her power and live up to her gifts, despite her constant and, frankly, totally avoidable backsliding into sin and excess.

("Priestess?! How could you eat those cakes?! They were meant for the orphans!"
"In my defense, those orphans will no longer have to worry about the deadly sin of gluttony."
"There were over ten full cakes!"
"I was feeling extremely generous about saving their orphan souls. Do you have any milk?")

Well, unlike EO, none of the skills are bugged and they all work as intended. That counts for something, right? :v:

But yeah, even with the USA patch, there are some real poor design decisions in the game. I still enjoyed it (and like it more than VFD), I wouldn't be doing an LP if I didn't. Though I do consider EO to be better designed. (Haven't played the PSP games, so I can't speak for those.)

Probably gonna decide on the roster soon. It's gonna be pretty tough, since there are a lot of good submissions.

You say you're not quite sure why there's 8-bit tracks, but I can quite easily explain that. It's Yuzo Koshiro's MO. Every track he composes is intentionally done on a much weaker soundchip, and then scaled up. In this case, the absolute original tracks are the 8-bit ones, and the ones you DO hear in the game are the presented ones.

Even as a child, he was just as unpleasant to be around, which only became worse as his magic began to develop and he found new ways to make the lives of those around hum just that much more miserable. Eventually, his small town got fed up and sent him packing with the instructions to "Do some good with your life for once", but with the tone of "If you die out there, you're not our problem anymore". Zhi will claim that he didn't accept, just that he had already gotten fed up with everyone there as well. Somehow, he managed to survive long enough to make it to Kazan, but since making it here has already been kicked out of two guilds for his abhorrent behavior. But hey, one of these "abject failures" has to need a mage eventually, right?

Over a thousand years ago, an evil demon ruled the planet with an iron fist. A Dark One whose name may never be uttered, it unleashed evils so horrific that ancient accounts of its wrath barely scratched the surface of the pure agony and destruction it caused. But, despite how much terror it bestowed into the hearts of all living beings who have come to know it, a clan of warriors stepped forth to challenge the demon and set the world free of its wrath. Against the staggering odds, the clan fought a bloody, merciless battle until, miraculously, it finally prevailed over the demon. In an effort to prevent such evil from escaping into the world again, the clan sealed the demon into the planet's core, never to see the light of day ever again. However, the demon proclaimed it would have the final laugh, as it cursed the remaining clan members with an evil that will haunt them for generations: an eventuality that, one day, the clan will cause the reawakening of the demon once again.

Exactly one thousand years later, about fifteen years from the present day, the last descendant of the clan had been born. A young princess, claiming her royalty thanks to the ancestors who defeated the Dark One, had received the full brunt of the curse. Her parents had witnessed the awakening of the demon once again, through the eyes of the girl that they had carefully raised in peace. But alas, though the demon had awoken as this young girl, its power was still hopelessly sealed away in the core of the planet, never to be wielded by this once all-powerful ruler ever again. Now stuck as a young girl, Dia joins the Hunters in Kazan, hopelessly defeated by the prospect of never regaining her dark glory ever again. But hey, maybe she can eventually find a group strong enough to undo her power's seal, and restore her to her true self? Who knows.

Fighter, Mage, Healer, and Princess

That's a really strong party. I don't know how well they do in the early game (as I usually start with a Knight because of the "questionable design choices" we will soon see) but starting around mid-game this set-up is an perpetuum-mobile of destruction.
Fighter + Mage deals enough damage to kill most things in a few turns, Fighter can take a hit and Healer + Princess make sure your Life and even your Mana will always be full.
So the only reasons to go back to town is because your inventory is full, to complete a quest or because you ran out of things to murder.
Though it's not too exciting to play as the most effective strategy with this party is to always use the same few skills.

However we probably will not see the Mana restoration before it's time to vote for the next party.
I still wanted to throw my thoughts on this party out there is case someone wants to pick up the game and is looking for a party.
Fighter alone in the front, Mage, Healer and Princess in the back is a rock solid choice.

Game Mechanics: Basic Mechanics and Formulae

In this minor update, I'm just gonna cover a few basic mechanics and formulae to give you an idea of how this game operates.

Okay, first off, let's create a character. I'll use a Fighter as an example.

So this is the Fighter's skill tree, where they can spend their skill points to learn various skills. Some skills require the user to learn some other skills first before they can be learned. The skill map for those is helpfully shown on the bottom screen. All newly created characters start off with 3 skill points.

Skill points can only be obtained through level ups. Every time a character gains a level, they also gain 1 skill point. The exception to this is if they hit a level that's a multiple of 5, at which point they gain 2 skill points instead. For those of you familiar with Etrian Odyssey, most of this may sound familiar. However, there's one key difference between this game and the EO series that you should be aware of.

Unlike in Etrian Odyssey, where it always takes 1 point to level up a skill, 7th Dragon makes it so that sometimes, you need to spend multiple skill points to level up a skill. In some cases, the SP cost of a skill can even increase while you're leveling it up. Meaning that in some cases, it's better to save your skill points than to spend them right away.

Oh, and there are a few skills for every class that you won't be able to unlock for a good while. For the record, 7th Dragon doesn't really tell you how much more powerful a skill becomes when leveling it up, but don't worry. I'm able to pull out that data to get it right out into the open.

Anyways, there's something else I want to show off, but I'll have to create another character to do so.

There's actually a special password you can input during character creation. Input that and then a number ranging from 1 to 28, depending on the portrait you're using.

Since this is the 4th portrait out of all 28 of them, that will be the password I'll input for this one.

Doing so will give the character their canon name. Oh, but this isn't just an Easter Egg.

Inputting that password also gives you an extra skill point to make use of. I won't be doing this, since it really doesn't matter that much in the end, and having an extra skill point at the beginning of the game is just plain overkill since you can get some key skills you aren't supposed to get during the toughest part of the game. For the record...

You have to put in the password to get the extra skill point. Inputting their name right away does nothing. If you're having trouble with the game, you can try doing this little trick to get a leg up.

Anyways, let's take a look at some of the formulas 7th Dragon uses. First off, the physical attack formula. The game takes a look at your physical attack stat, which is determined by this formula:

ATK = POW + (Weapon Attack * Weapon Mastery)

POW and Weapon Attack are self explanatory. The Weapon Mastery is a multiplier that most classes have to increase the power of their weapon. In most cases, this maxes out at 1.3. Since enemies don't have a weapon, they only use their ATK stat to calculate damage.

Damage = [(User's ATK – Target's DEF) + ATK Bonus] * Damage Multipliers

User's ATK and Target's DEF is self explanatory. ATK Bonus is a special attribute that some skills have, in which case they add onto the base damage calculated from stats. Damage Multipliers are the damage multipliers from skills, and the ones that belong to enemies. Critical hits only apply to regular attacks, but if they activate, the attack gets a 30% damage boost.

The final result is a bit random, but it'll be around the base damage output.

The formula for spells is... not as simple.

For players, the formula is:

Damage = [((User's INT / 2) * Spell Power + (2.5 + (Mastery Power * 2.5)) – (Target's DEF / 2) – (Target's INT / 2)) * Damage Multipliers]

For enemies, the formula is:

Damage = [(User's INT / 2) + Base Damage – (Target's DEF / 2) – (Target's INT / 2)] * Damage Multipliers

The final result then has a random factor added on.

If the damage is less than 20, the random factor ranges from -2 to 2.
If the damage output is greater than 20, but less than 200, the random factor ranges from -5 to 5.
If the damage output is greater than 200, the random factor ranges from -10 to 10.

Spell Mastery is an attribute that only the Mage has. It doesn't do much, and only adds 7.5 to 22.5 points of damage depending on how high their Spell Mastery level is. All of the Mage's spells have an additional multiplier attached to them, which is factored in at the end. Most enemy spells don't have an additional damage multiplier, so in most cases, you can ignore that.

Anyways, INT is very important, and if you want your Mage to deal a lot of damage with their spells, you need to increase their INT as much as possible. Of course if you want to reduce spell damage, you need to increase both your DEF and your INT, though that's not as effective as reducing physical damage.

Do note that if you try to run away from battle, any party member that inputted the Run command will take 30% more damage.

INT is actually used in one more formula. Namely, the healing formula.

Healing = Skill Healing Power * [1 + (0.2 * Healing Mastery Bonus)] + (INT / 5)

INT doesn't really give that much of a boost to healing, though it can help a bit.

The formula for speed is fairly simple:

Speed = SPD * Skill Speed Modifier + A random number from 0 to 10.

All skills have a speed modifier that basically influences how fast or slow the user will act when they cast it.

Ailment infliction has no formula associated with it, aside from the infliction rate being multiplied by the target's susceptibility to ailments. Ailment recovery does, and it's dependent the victim's level. I don't know the exact formula, but the bigger the victim's level, the longer they take to recover.

Speaking of ailments, let's look into Poison damage.

Poison Damage = (20 * Poison Skill Power + 3) * Poison Boosts

The damage that Poison deals is dependent upon what skill was used to inflict it, but it can also be amplified in this game.

React skills are a staple of the 7th Dragon series. Most classes can use one to place a buff on themselves for a few turns. If the character fulfills a specific condition while the buff is in effect, they'll get an extra turn when the turn ends. And yes, reacts can still activate during an extra turn, so you could theoretically create a positive feedback loop where a character takes multiple actions in only 1 actual turn.

And here's the exp formula:

EXP = (Total EXP / # of living party members) * Character Multiplier

The character multiplier is a special factor that depends on the party member's level. It's determined through a separate formula.

Scaling Factor = Lowest Level in Enemy Group - Character's Level

If Scaling Factor is equal to 20 or more, Character Multiplier is equal to 1.2.
If Scaling Factor is equal to 1 to 19, Character Multiplier is equal to 1 + 0.01 * Scaling Factor.
If Scaling Factor is equal to -5 to 0, Character Multiplier is equal to 1.
If Scaling Factor is equal to -6 to -10, Character Multiplier is equal to 0.5.
If Scaling Factor is equal to -11 or less, Character Multiplier is equal to 0.25.

Basically, if you're at a lower level than intended, you'll be gaining exp pretty fast. If you're overleveled, don't expect to gain much.

All characters share 3 skills, POW Bonus, INT Bonus, and SPD Bonus. All those increase those stats by a specific amount.

POW costs twice as much as the other skills since increasing POW does increase both the character's ATK and DEF stats. Which stats should be leveled up depends on the class, though unless said skills are a prerequisite to something, they shouldn't be leveled up until you have nothing else you want to spend your skill points on.

Oh, and one last thing.

Rogues can equip Bows, which have a... special property. Namely that every time the Rogue fires an arrow from their bow, their accuracy decreases by 5% for each shot they make for the rest of the battle.

The game does not tell you that this mechanic exists at all. Your only hint that said mechanic exists is that the Rogue specifically has a skill to reset said accuracy back to normal (which is not worded all that well), and that during long battles, your Rogue will mysteriously start missing their attacks very often.

Welcome to 7th Dragon.

I assume the accuracy penalty is an attempt of balancing for the Rogue sitting in the back dealing good damage instead of getting punched in the face in the frontline.

Strange thing is, bows are strongest early- to mid-game when battles are short enough anyways so the accuracy decrease does not even matter at this point.
They have higher base attack, Bow Mastery scales better than Sword Mastery (although it takes more SP starting with rank 6) and they basically only need Double Shot to deal damage. All their other skills will rarely if ever get used.
Daggers are more combo-oriented, have several good skills worth maxing and need a second mastery skill with Dagger Fetish to get good damage values.

So as the game goes on and you get more skill points, daggers become slowly better while bows get actively worse since the accuracy decrease will have an effect more often which means a turn spent aiming.
Yeah, I don't know if anyone in the thread already said it but there are some questionable design decisions in this game...

For the most part, spellcasters are "balanced" by having a secondary finite resource to have to manage. This means that if bows didn't have a downside they'd just be flatout better in most games since who wants to deal with micromanaging arrows and junk?

It just doesn't work out like that at all in practice because MP (or item uses in FE) is either really easy to recover in multiple ways, something that affects everyone equally and so it's not really a balancing method or both.

One nice thing about the skill system is that a lot of skills are quite usable at low levels. It makes the early progression a lot faster than in the early etrians, also partially because of that extra skill point.

EDIT: Also about the 1 skill point characters, the way you got the passwords for them was through a little promotional thing on the JP website http://dragon.sega.jp/ , where you talked to them a lot. One of the passwords is a little different though, as it starts you with a character that has special equipment. The stats are poor, but one piece disables random encounters, and the other piece disables bloom damage. Both very useful for obvious reasons.

:cawg: Of course it does! Wouldn't be not-Etrian Odyssey unless there was some stupid quirk. Wanted to say it was a bug, but why would they add a skill specifically for that?

It's definitely not a bug. There's a counter exclusive to the Rogue when they use a bow that goes up whenever they make a shot. It's hard capped at 255, since it's just a 1-bit counter. If I'm reading the code right, accuracy is capped between 50% and 150%. And that value gets multiplied by 5, meaning that every shot decreases the Rogue's accuracy by 5%. So they have some leeway before they start whiffing. Even at 255, shots will still hit 50% of the time, that much I can confirm.

Bows deal more raw damage than swords, and don't need as much setup as Daggers. (Also to use Dagger Rogue to great effect, you really need a Princess.) I suspect it may have been implemented to curb a potential positive feedback loop with their react skill. Though nothing's stopping you from using Daggers instead. Really, my problem with it is that it's not communicated to the player well at all.

There wasn't much of a following at release for the English fanbase. Even though the game got a fan translation 3 years ago, it still didn't gather much attention. There are a couple of English resources out there, but they're fairly sparse in info. And the ones that do exist don't use the fan translated names, since those sites were created before the fan translation came out. Your best bet is either looking at the Japanese sites and using Google Translate (And trying to decipher the nonsense it will spit out), or trying to cross reference the fan translated names with the literal translations, and figure out which is which.

Though with that said, unlike Etrian Odyssey, there's not really much emphasis on enemy drops unlocking items. Most of them just exist purely to be sold for cash and won't unlock anything. (Or get used in a fetch quest somewhere.)

That is basically the best resource I have found.
It has a weapon section and an enemies section; cross-referencing both will help you to find where you get stuff for new weapons.

Update 2: Touring Kazan

It's the first place a new Hunter in Kazan ought to come visit. It's a place for Hunters to meet, to form guilds, and to sign up new members. Do you belong to a guild already? Or are you starting your own?
Oh, I'm starting my own!
Oh, setting one up? Hmm, I wonder what you want to call it?
Hmm... Aha! I've got the perfect name!

This is what was voted on, so Odyssey is what we'll be going with.

That's a nice name. I'll register it for you. There's just one name there now, but you can add members at any time. I recommend finding 3 friends before you go! Go with your friends to the building next door. The Quest Office is the main place where Hunters can find work. Anyhow, best of luck. I'll be seeing you.
Don't worry, I got a few more on the way!
...And that's when I noticed a bunch near that forest as well.
I wonder if those sneaks had anything to do with it.
Tch, does it matter how they appeared? It's not our problem. Yet.
...Not them.
Ah, another fellow looking to make a guild?
Heh, good luck to ya!

For the record, I have no idea what they say.

I spy with my little eye...

Free food!
Sure, take food that you find in random places. It's not like it's unsanitary or anything.

There are various kinds of containers around towns that can contain an item or something else. It's generally worth your time to inspect them.

Paro Fruits are the basic healing item in this game. At this point, 30 Life is pretty much a full heal for a few classes. Like I said, looking around town can be worth your time.

So I'm going to build one with my own two hands! It'll be fun to see what kind of folks come to join up ♪

We're not allowed to explore the town until we enter that building.

Might as well look around town a bit first.

May as well.

Welcome to the Quest Office! We're all over the world. Our job is to connect Hunters and clients. First, go about town to discover new quests. Then, stop by the Office to formally accept them. Next, talk with the client to get the details. And once you're done, come back to the Quest Office for a reward. If you find a quest is completely impossible, you can cancel it. There are Quest Offices in lots of countries, not just in Kazan. You can accept and turn in quests at all of them. However, each guild can only be assigned to three quests at one time. We hope the questing life works out wonderfully for you! Best of luck!

I'll talk a bit more about the quest system later, but all I'll say for now is that it has problems.

There aren't any available now. Things have been peaceful lately.

I don't see any right now. Try talking to people around town and see what they need.

This is where the world's Hunters come for work, and the rewards thereof. We mediate between clients and Hunters. Keep doing requests in order to build a name for yourselves as Hunters. Got it?

Uhh, run that by me again.
Oh for the love of-!
Off to a great start, I see.
Really? Well, you'll catch on soon enough. You also might want to poke around town for any other jobs to do. We're happy to have rookies like you. Stay safe and good luck!

As we go to leave...

The "CUSTOM" option is very important. It lets you spend your SP on various skills. As you adventure, you'll gain more SP each time you level up. Anyway, those're the basics. So get to it!

Why don't we listen to him and start customizing our characters?

Chopping's more flashy than slashing!

Fighters have 2 weapons that they can make use of, swords or axes. Sword skills are faster to go off compared to axes, and they can hit multiple enemies at once. While axes can only target 1 enemy and are slower to go off, but they're more powerful than swords. Which is why I'm going with an axe build for Stella. I just prefer having more offensive power.

I call this, the super axe chop!

Leveling up Axecraft to 1 unlocks Power Crash, which I pick up for Stella in case I want her to deal more damage than usual. I won't be leveling it past 1, but it should hold her over for now. It has a speed modifier of 85%, and deals 130% damage at level 1. Spending a skill point like this may seem wasteful to an EO player, but the early game in 7th Dragon is really rough, and I need all the help I can get. Also, you have plenty of skill points to spare in 7th Dragon.

Look, I'll try my best to keep you all safe, but only if you actually work with me here.

Medicine is the basic mastery skill for Healers. What it does is provide a boost to healing and cast speed of healing skills. Though it doesn't do anything at level 1 since the healing bonus and cast speed multiplier are both 100%. Now the healing boost isn't applied to the actual healing component. Instead, it's applied to a 20% boost that's applied to all healing skills, so it's not as potent as it could be.

This'll keep you alive, as long as you aren't being stupid. Please don't be stupid.

Cure I is the basic healing skill. It has a speed modifier of 80%, and has a base healing of 12 HP.

Then again, I don't really trust any of you to actually listen to me, so I'm just gonna take matters into my own hands here.

The Healer's main form of offense is inflicting Poison upon their enemies. I'm mainly getting this for Edward just so he has something to do other than being a healbot. Toxicology affects both Poison damage and casting speed, but like with Medicine, Toxicology basically does nothing at level 1 since both of those modifiers are at 100%.

I wonder how well living things take to being shocked.

I pick up Shock Mastery which increases Lightning damage and the cast speed of Lighting spells. Of course, it does nothing at level 1. However, these skills really don't do much when it comes to increasing damage, because they only increase spell damage by 3 or 4 points per level. Yeah... At least they do have a somewhat noticeable effect on casting speed.

Only one way to find out!

Shock deals Lightning damage to one enemy. It has a speed modifier of 80%, has a spell power of 300%, and a damage multiplier of 150% at level 1.

I should experiment with ice too.

I'm gonna pick up all 3 elements for Nila, but I'm mainly gonna focus on Ice and Lighting. Mainly because Fire is kind of the “worst” element in this game. Ice tends to be the big weakness for a lot of bosses, and Lightning can provide additional coverage on top of that.

I may as well put this vessel to good use.

Nobility increases the casting speed of holy songs. Like with all other mastery skills, it does nothing at level 1.

There shall be plenty of slaughter on the battlefields.

Heated Words places a buff on the party that increases their ATK stat. It has an 80% speed modifier, and at level 1, it applies an 110% multiplier to the party's attack stat. Something to keep in mind is that most of the Princess' holy songs have a permanent duration, so they won't wear off until the battle ends, or if a party member dies. Even if you're not interested in offensive buffs for whatever reason, you should still invest one point into this since it can dispel attack debuffs.

...What use do I have for this?

Hard Words has an 80% speed modifier and applies an 110% multiplier to the party's defense stat at level 1 for the duration of the battle. I'm not really a fan of Hard Words, since I prefer offensive buffs over defensive ones. Though it's definitely worth it to take a point in this since it can dispel defense debuffs.

Anyways, once we leave the quest office...

The game helpfully points out which NPCs you need to talk to. Don't expect it to keep this up.

How am I going to get a more exciting mission?

In order to initiate quests in this game, you have to talk with NPCs. Outside of those 3 NPCs the game indicated, you can't really tell which NPC will give you a quest or not. So basically, talk to everyone.

Resting at an inn recovers all your party member's Life and Mana, as well as refilling their EX Gauges. However, it can't dispel status effects or revive dead party members. And dead party members are unaffected by sleeping at an inn. There's also a penalty to using them, but that won't be seen for a while. They also serve as a way you can save your game, as 7th Dragon makes use of a save point system instead of a save anywhere system. Thankfully, you don't have to pay for an inn stay to save your game.

You're gonna love it!

And here's the weapon shop. Oh, about that 100% thing at the top, don't worry about it for now. It won't be relevant until later.

Swords can be equipped by multiple classes, and are considered to be a melee weapon.

Axes can only be equipped by Fighters. They're generally more powerful than swords, but most of them come with a SPD penalty to compensate. They're also considered melee weapons.

Wands are actually one of the stronger weapon types in the game, though they can only be used by the casting classes. Some of them come with some nice stat boosts, though the starting wand doesn't come with them. Again, it's considered to be a melee weapon.

Whips can only be used by Princesses (And those are the only weapon type they can make use of.) They're actually the weakest weapon type in the game, but they are considered to be a ranged weapon. So there's absolutely no reason to have a Princess in the front row unless you somehow don't have a frontliner.

Bows can only be used by Rogues. They're obviously a ranged weapon, but they all have a hidden property where every time an arrow gets fired from one, the Rogue's accuracy gets reduced by 5% per shot for the rest of the battle. There's a lower cap of 50%, so the Rogue can't ever not hit, but it can be annoying to run into in long battles. Of course depending on the Rogue's SPD stat, their accuracy can go as high as 150%, so it may take a while for them to get there.

There are two weapon types that aren't available in the shop right now. One of them are daggers. They're only usable by Rogues, and along with whips, they're also the weakest weapon type in the game. They're considered to be melee weapons.

The other one are katanas, and those can only be used by Samurai. Samurai specifically need katanas to make use of most of their skills, so for a good part of the earlygame, they won't be able to use said skills. For the time being, they'll have to stick with swords.

You might want to spend your starting money on armor upgrades. Those defense boosts may not seem like much, but they can increase the number of attacks enemies will need to make to kill a character. Even forcing them to make 1 extra attack can make a huge difference, especially since reviving characters without going to a revival clinic isn't possible to pull off at this point in the game.

I don't do any of that and proceed to bankrupt my party by buying a Hand Axe for Stella.

It's so shiny and sharp! Just what I need to clobber everything!
Um, maybe you shouldn't have spent all our funds on just one weapon, and you know, actually bought us some armor!?

I think I saw one in the shop.
It's something you make to keep travelers safe. Right now, my brother's away, journeying as a rookie Hunter. So I wanted to make a Traveler's Amulet for him! But... you absolutely need a certain kind of nut. He's leaving Kazan soon, though... What do I do?

Okay, now that we've activated all 3 quests, let's take them up.

You can't really just accept the quest on the spot, you have to go to the quest office first, then take them up. It's a little cumbersome.

On second thought, I regret this already. No.
Wha-? We totally-
Sooo... does that mean you guys wanna join my guild?!
No no no, you got this all wrong.
Oh... I guess you would probably just say so if that were it, huh? But that's fine! I'm still pretty grateful to you! Okay, lemme explain things. I'm a rookie Hunter, but... I still wanted to form a guild.
Uh huh.
Don't look at me like that! It's more fun this way! Better to learn the trade with a bunch of friends to party with, right?? But... nobody showed up! Is no one interested? Or does nobody have confidence in me cuz I'm still learning? Hey, I bet you could do it! You could convince some people to join my guild! Well... at least... 2 people, I guess. That's enough.
Do you actually have an idea of where to find anyone?
...Huh? Where can you find 'em? I... don't really know! Buuut… probably not here. I mean, I looked all over town and found nothing. So I would look around just outside of town.

Talking to her again will net us another hint.

Could you at least give us a place to start?
Remember, 2 people just outside of town is what I need! Like, maybe, Rorakka Cavern up north of here. Or off to the southeast? If there's anybody, they must be out there. Cuz I checked around here. You guys gotta join my guild if you don't find 'em!

This is probably the easiest quest to do, so I recommend getting it done first.

Oh it's fine! It's our job after all! Soooo... what do you need?
I'm the leader of the Courier Guild. It's my job to deliver packages. But I forgot how old I'm getting these days. I just threw out my hip. I could ask my son, but the monsters are strong. But you'd have no problem. Some courier I am! I can't even walk. It really is a shame. If you could deliver this to Miross in my place, I would be most grateful.

It's for a popular knight in Miross. Please deliver it for me!

From ruling the world with an iron fist, to delivering a mere package. How far I've fallen.
Are you still keeping up that crazy demon act?
IT IS NO MERE ACT, MORTAL!
Mmhmm, that's cute.
Somebody end me now.

It's probably best to save this quest for last, as the enemies around Miross are very dangerous to our party for the moment.

I'm looking for the Nuts dropped by Nutshells outside of town. I'll need about three Nuts to make a charm. Thanks for helping!

This is just a fetch quest, and there are a lot of those in this game. We just need to kill a few monsters for their item drops, but the monsters that drop these are a little tough to deal with at this point in the game. Just a word of warning.

Okay... backing away slowly...

Next time we'll leave town and get some quests done.

You think you can defeat ME, Ephraimcopter?!?

You couldn't even beat Assassincopter!!!
Let me guess, you also have to go back to the questgiver first and then go back to the Quest Office to turn it in?

Pointless busywork :argh:

It does seem like the whole quest system could've been simplified a bit. There's no real point in having to find the quest-giver, who could be anyone, and then go to the guild. At least mark the NPCs that give quests, geez.
