This does look interesting, but I'm so glad games have moved on from this. This looks like one of those games where you can play through the whole thing in 20 minutes if you know the true path, so most of the gameplay is dedicated to obscuring and messing with that as much as possible to make the game last 4 hours.

How crazy does the Prisoner-ness get as the game goes on?

It can be finished quite quickly without needing to use emulator speed up. There are in built skips for some of the slower sequences. Which is kind of sensible when you consider it's essentially a puzzle game but with permadeath.

Also, if the graphics were any better the game over sequence wouldn't be as terrifying :)

On that point, will you be doing the sequel/remake also?

Now I kinda want to see a game over demonstrated, I tried looking this up but I couldn't find any existing videos of this.

I don't know if showing it would screw up SelenicMartian's save game, so I shall describe how my young brain saw it:

The screen shows a computer or monitoring station with flashing lights, made out of the same white blocks as everything else. At the top middle is a screen, showing a # in the middle, and below are the three digits of your code.

Two more #'s appear beside yours, then two above, and then more, until the entire monitoring screen is full of them. Is the camera zooming in? Zooming out? Are you being copied? Who knows? But it's full of #'s, now, all just like you.

With a violent scratching sound a tide of X's slam down, obliterating all of the #'s and your code.

The bottom of the screen then types out: "THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION. YOU MAY HAVE LOST, BUT WE HAVE GAINED. BE SEEING YOU."

It probably looks like total crap to a modern viewer but that was how it felt when I first saw it.

I'm assuming Selenic knows the game too and is holding back spoilers for thread discovery. That's why I'm keeping quiet about what I know, since there's plenty more avoidable pain coming.

Ok, so that's the actual, legitimate, call-the-software-company error handler there. So I decided to take a look at this:

code:
]LOAD PR.CARNY
]LIST 600

600 VTAB 12: FOR I = 0 AND 2: HTAB 10 + I: PRINT CHR$(92): NEXT I: VTAB 13: HTAB 9: PRINT " + ": RETURN
Wait... FOR I = 0 AND 2? That's not even legal BASIC. It should be FOR I = 0 TO 2. I'm not sure if that's an error on the disk image or anything, but changing that should make it work.. I'm pretty sure this isn't an intended puzzle or anything either.

As for getting on in the game.. you need stuff to happen in the Theater. I'm not sure how to make it do so though.

I had the exact same error message once after running out of the library books. The game can do this "crash" instead of gassing you.

That's still not a fake crash though, it goes through an ON ERROR command and everything. Also you aren't supposed to get gassed at that point in the Carnival. I'm not sure why it'd happen randomly but it's not meant to be part of the game.

Edit: sorry but it's a pet peeve. Milgram did a whole series of experiments and only one produced the famous result. For example, the experiment began with the subject and the actor drawing cards to determine who would be getting the shocks. Of course the draw was faked/rigged. But if it wasn't included, the obedience rate went way down. And most real obedience scenarios that people connect with it don't contain any equivalent.

There were around 13 or 14 variations that Milgram wrote about. And at least one of them produced even higher rates of obedience than the original model--the one where the subject is only obliged to read the words or declare "correct" or "incorrect", not actually push the shock button.

So in order to disobey, they'd have to lie about the actor's response to prevent them from being shocked by the whitecoat? Interesting - and significant in the context.

So the game keeps repeating "no man is an island" over and over, just like the key to escape is the key to escape. But we've yet to see either no man or an island. The village is specifically not on an island, at least in the show. So what does it mean? Keep going long enough in one direction and you'll escape?

In the series, it was called the Village; in the game it's changed to the Island because the game wasn't actually officially licensed.

It's obvious this was a last minute change though. The data file on the game disc is still called PR.VILLAGE and.. well, we'll see later some other ways in which they forgot it was supposed to be an island.

And Portmeirion is awesome. You can walk around it on Google Earth now if you want to. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place...6!6m1!1e1?hl=en

I was delighted to learn that my Dad used to work in Wales and was a regular visitor to Portmeirion (in pre-Prisoner days). I think there used to be a Prisoner shop in situ there after the series came out, but it closed up when it became less well-known and now only travels there.. for the yearly Prisoner re-enactment convention. I'm not kidding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el28ZJoyzVY&t=2s

Didn't expect just having the number come up randomly would end the game but I guess it is gambling. I'm pretty much at a loss at what to do and am being reminded why I stopped playing text adventures :v:

It's not text adventures, it's just this game. It's really easy to just lose your direction totally.

And yea, you might have to manually patch PR.CARNY . Everything I've looked at since suggests that error is genuine, possibly caused by bit rot on the disk image.

pre:
]LOAD PR.CARNY
]600 VTAB 12: FOR I = 0 TO 2: HTAB 10 + I: PRINT CHR$(92): NEXT I: VTAB 13: HTAB 9: PRINT " + ": RETURN

That's interesting. It seems that version 1.9.1 doesn't just fix the Carnival bug, but it actually adds some features that were originally in Prisoner 2. The increased cost of clues is one of those, as is that particular mission, although oddly the court isn't updated, nor is the score loss from participating in your own humiliation in the carnival. In Prisoner 2 asking for a clue is the most damaging action you can take, and grabbing the balloon is tied for second most damaging at -20. The most damaging action in Prisoner 1 is also -25, so I wonder if it has been made worse to account for the increased clue cost? (We haven't see the action yet, but it's pretty easy to recognize it.)

But yea. Doing Brotherhood missions skyrockets your score and is by far the best way to unlock score-related stuff. That's why getting that Theatre contact is so important.

Ok, since this has been quiet and is freezing, here's a spoiler on the "Run the island" puzzle because it's frankly ruddy stupid. It's actually one of the parts of Prisoner 2 that was back-ported into Prisoner 1.9.1, so the answer is in the Prisoner 2 Design Document which is available online.

Hint: It's nothing to do with the 'running the island' game.

Spoiler: You have to trigger the fake Syntax Error message, and when it appears, enter the command that would run a program called "the island". This might just be RUN THE ISLAND or something more complicated, it depends on the implementation.

"SHOW ME THE ISLAND COMPUTER" also works but messes up the meaning.

But yea, "the point of this game is to show you how much games suck" is a really disappointing ending.

(Also, the logo of a person trapped inside an Apple logo becomes a good retroactive spoiler. Prisoner 2's cover showed a computer screen being broken from the side. Plus, it has the same "who is the master" thing as the original series did.)

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't get why typing [wt] would pull the plug. Unless it's just a completely arbitrary thing.

One of the later clues is "INPUT THE PLUG". The trick is that the Apple 2 had no [] keys, so the only way to enter the [=] string the caretaker gives you is to use the edit commands - which is what the "manufacturer's note" is telling you to do. It's the author's way of showing you're breaking the fourth wall, and in fact it's exactly the same as the method used to input [WT] in the carnival.

And I'm not sure I agree that it's not mocking the player - the main reason you want to find the ending, after all, is to experience the creative work that's gone into it. Having that creative work just say that you shouldn't have tried to find it is rather insulting. Although it is true that there was indeed a huge amount of cynicism about computer games when they first came out..
