I'm aware that this is a comparison between American and European middle-class people, but that's the only experiences I have made so far. I'm definitely looking forward to visiting the US for the first time this year, but I'm also more scared of going there than any other place I've been to yet, especially because of what you hear about paranoid officials and all the special things you need to worry about you wouldn't need to do when travelling to other, even non-EU places.

If you feel nervous in America, remember that your passport should be good enough to prove that you're over 18, and you can buy a drop knife for like $20. Usually a three-inch or smaller blade is classified as a tool, not a weapon, but that depends on jurisdiction.

e: some shops don't really care though, knives like that were pretty common in my high school.

e2: Euro-types, what's your opinion of US weed culture?

Question for all you dirty foreigners: how aware are you of regional differences in the US? Like, I kinda know that Europe has certain stereotypes by region, like how Bavarians are a bunch of hillbilly morons or how people from Berlin are jelly donuts, Parisians are assholes, and the English are just godawful all-round, I'm probably off on some of these, but you get the picture.

Do US states/regions have similar reputations?

Fun anecdote: The early development of the American identity involved differentiating the "historic" grandeur of Europe from the "naturalistic" grandeur of North America. I work in conservation, and I've used this to succesfully communicate with more conservative pro-development folks or the "duck dynasty" sportsman types. The implication being that by neglecting our natural assets, rivers, and wild areas, they risk ruining what's left of the American identity and turning us into pinko-commie Europe. :v:

So... If I litter more it's a victory for socialism?
