I wonder if there's a memory leak or something like that going on. I've occasionally gotten situations like that, but only after a few hours of gameplay. Or I'm seeing a pattern in static and luck, who knows.

I tried making a cistern at the top of my base, but I just used sandstone to make the floors and walls of it as that was what I had available. I did not have that cistern for very long.

Part of it right now is that as it is still in the early access alpha there is not a whole lot of content yet, so people are experimenting to see what crazy stuff they can make after they've done all the research and gotten to a fairly sustainable state. You don't need to have a crazy gas freezing setup, but that doesn't mean you can't make one.
