I have never been hugely into art but recently started doodling when I get bored. Mostly I still kind of don't know what things look like when I'm not looking at them, so I like drawing from reference photos. This is from a day when I saw a seagull in the parking lot and also had a lot of coffee - I used Google Image Search to find references and try to draw them. This is from today and was not, uh, done from any reference. As if I needed to tell you that.

Painting a mural and struggling with the skin. Acrylic glazes can be hard. Especially when we are talking glazes several feet in size. It's above a local bar. I plan on using masking tape and contact paper / spray paint for the mandala.

I use floetrol which is something like 14 bucks a gallon and works just as well as any acrylic medium IMO. The thing is something like 8 foot in width so I need a lot. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Flood-Floetrol-1-qt-Clear-Latex-Paint-Additive-FLD6-04/100198078 Making skin from glazes is especially difficult at that size. The pearl I wanted to use for the highlights ended up being too much and much more luminescent / cool in tone than expected.

Thank you!!! I am working on a sort of WatW universe type thing right now, not sure what form it's going to take but the world building is always fun. BTW that's Securities Frog.

Thank you! I love toned paper with black and white charcoal or colored pencils. The paper provides the mid tones naturally. More work on the mural.

Currently working on getting the speed of my sketching up to par. This one only took an hour. I'm hoping I'll be able to get it down to about 30 minutes for the same quality, now that I've roughly figured out tools and workflow.

You're all doing great work and should be proud of yourselves! I'm picking up the tablet for the first time in a month so I'm warming up them art muscles and getting the daily train rollin' with The Crypt of the Necrodancer, which I played for like 15 mins and then had to draw.

Hey guys, I almost never post but I'm trying to work on getting back on the horse with drawing/illustration, so here's a bunch of quick-ish movement study bodes in pigment liner:

It's a little rough going with the brush pens, probably because I do legit love working with ball point pens, but I might get a set with various sizes-I foresee them being good for finishing pencil sketches, and as a swooshier complement to felt tips I've been learning to use the past year.

sharpest crayon posted:Don't stop posting but I screamed internally when I read this. I'm not insulted, but curious as to why? I can qualify why I like ball point pen, beyond familiarity and comfort, and can equally understand why someone would prefer a brush pen-I've seen amazing work produced with them, that's why I'm experimenting with them now. Anyway, (ball point pen 😈)doodles from watching tv and work respectively: And fresh brush pen lines over an old pencil sketch:

Sharpest Crayon posted:Don't stop posting but I screamed internally when I read this. It's more similar, mechanically, to etching than to art pens. As such, it's not bad as practice for etching. Myself, I use ball points a lot for sketching, since they're so cheap and readily available. I don't use graphite pencils unless I really have to, and have basically replaced them with ballpoints in my repertoire.

My hatred for ballpoint pens is purely based on the ink and the lack of control. The pen will sometimes leave a thinner line, meaning you gotta go over it again and now the line's messy. Sometimes you don't get a line at all, just a scratch on soft paper. And then another scratch. And another and ffffff come onnn *draws smudges in the corner to get the ink flowing* goddamnit I can SEE there's ink in there come onnnn ok here we go again. Sometimes when you're shading the sticky ink comes out in a blob that will smear as you're moving your hand around. The thicker lines you sometimes get stay sticky and smear-able for too long. I also obviously prefer having line width variation. If you like even lines though, the felt tips are so much easier to control if you don't wanna splurge on those mechanical ink pens (which I did, because I loved doing tiny details). I understand ballpoints are available and cheap and I'll doodle with them if I have nothing else at hand as well, but the idea of actually working with them brings up a cold sweat and a faint memory of paper with squares printed on it. This is obvs personal preference, you like working with them, you keep doing it.

Ha, the reason I like ballpoint seems to be the reason the previous two posts don't (and that's totally fine!)-I prefer building up the lines, and like the similarities to graphite (the other medium I tend to work in); I like that I can get different effects with different pressure, as well as the lack of line fidelity. The etching comparison is apt, and not one I'd realized, but makes total sense.
