My hatred for ballpoint pens is purely based on the ink and the lack of control. The pen will sometimes leave a thinner line, meaning you gotta go over it again and now the line's messy. Sometimes you don't get a line at all, just a scratch on soft paper. And then another scratch. And another and ffffff come onnn *draws smudges in the corner to get the ink flowing* goddamnit I can SEE there's ink in there come onnnn ok here we go again.

Sometimes when you're shading the sticky ink comes out in a blob that will smear as you're moving your hand around. The thicker lines you sometimes get stay sticky and smear-able for too long. I also obviously prefer having line width variation. If you like even lines though, the felt tips are so much easier to control if you don't wanna splurge on those mechanical ink pens (which I did, because I loved doing tiny details).

I understand ballpoints are available and cheap and I'll doodle with them if I have nothing else at hand as well, but the idea of actually working with them brings up a cold sweat and a faint memory of paper with squares printed on it.

This is obvs personal preference, you like working with them, you keep doing it.
totally understand. I guess to what I said I'd add the caveat that you need to find a brand of ballpoint that doesn't skip and doean't leave ink blobs. Myself, I use Bic Cristal and it works pretty well.

WIP of a drawing I'm doing (with color notes on the sides), Critique would be nice.

I'm trying a type of shading where I take the skin color and darken it/change the hue. It kinda looks like he's either burnt or missing skin :ohdear:

And yeah, it's supposed to be a portrait of Pyrocynical. Dunno what SA's opinion on him is but he's one of the better content creators on YT.

as long as you're consistent with it in a whole picture it should be okay.
take note though that you may want to do lower saturation = shadow, higher saturation = highlight, otherwise your shadows will be the parts that pop out. it's not necessary though

Also just FYI, the pic on the right's being used for color ref, not the pose.

To me, the skin is looking a bit raw. For shadows, I personally like to pick just a darker, brown-greyer shade of whatever skin colour I'm using. If you're feeling wild tho, you can just go over the skin colour with a semi-opaque brush (or create a semi-opaque layer on top of your skin layer) and paint a shade of blue or purple on top of the skin colour.
I like the "porous" texture in the hair and I think you could add more touches like that around the pic.

its called aseprite. it's not really meant for this kind of thing, its more supposed to be used as a tool to animate sprites but i ended up using it. it makes animating things really easy, the timeline is well designed and the ui is v straightforward. i've been whipping things out of it p fast today

Update on the funny vlogger man drawing, looks a LOT fuckin' better. Pyro doesn't look like he has exposed flesh as much. I think the shading's comin' along good too.

Side note, does anyone ever get "iffy" when they describe an aspect of their work in a positive way, if that makes sense? Like when I said that the shading's coming along good, I get this paranoid feeling that I'm coming off as pretentious saying that I guess, heh.

A string of really good models at the workshop i go to has made me feel more confident about my life drawing, though I'm still itching to improve. Although I have more free time than ever, my attention is pulled in many different directions and it is hard to focus on this one skill to work on, especially when I am back to having fun at my current level.

I try to avoid judging my stuff on an objective level and just focus on relative success. Am I doing better than last year? Is the shading better than my last attempt? Am I feeling good about what I'm doing? It doesn't really matter though, my post above is kind of narcissistic too, just rambling journal-style. I like to write something along with the pictures I'm posting is all.

Skin colour's looking loads better!

That feeling of self-doubt that you may be overreaching when you talk about your work? That will never go away no matter how good you get, because it's stuck in your personality and not your ability. You can work on feeling more comfortable talking about your work in positive light. It's easier to talk about what you felt you succeeded in so you won't accidentally cross the line into calling it good, invoking the gods smite you down for your arrogance.
There's a world of difference between "I think this part really worked for me" and "I think this is the best thing anyone has ever arted and I'm hella deep". People are not gonna silently judge your for the former.

..having said that, check out this birb that's the best thing anyone has ever arted, because I'm hella deep.
