This week痴 Staff Pick is:

God of Gamblers (1989)

Directed and Written by: Wong Jing
Starring: Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau
IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097244/

In a sentence: A master gambler loses his memory, and is befriended by a street hustler who discovers his supernatural gambling abilities.

An 80s gambling star vehicle for Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau to look cool and win gambles. The main reason I知 watching it is because Parallax in the PHIZ movie thread talked about the series recently and it sounds cool. The first film was so successful that it was parodied by Stephen Chow with a movie called All for the Winner (1990), and the parody was so successful that they made a sequel to it called God of Gamblers II (1990) which took the characters from the parody and put them back into the original film. And then made a God of Gamblers III about time travel and Stephen Chow has telekinetic powers and it doesn稚 even have gambling. They also rebooted the movie a few times, which is how I first came into contact with it (I saw From Vegas to Macau (the second reboot) when it came out in 2014 and its pretty cool but I had no idea it had this strange legacy it was drawing from).

I only put God of Gamblers in the title but I知 probably gonna watch all 3 and All for the Winner in the next week or so. These films, like a crapton of HK movies from the 80s/90s, are on YouTube but the quality is usually dreadful so I値l just be watching it with :ninja: other means :ninja: .

Oh, and Jones was there too.

Andy Lau is pretty much the only Chinese actor I can name without first looking at a list of Chines actors, true fact.

Sounds a bit like a less serious Intacto. That's a good film, if you can bear to watch something that's not in Chinese.

all these films are great, each in their own unique way. III has a great scene where chow's character gets instructed how to do fight moves over the phone, from someone in the future, while he's in the middle of a fight

There's like an 8 minute bit where Chow talks to a woman's armpit and goes on a date with it and tries to feed it various meats and alcoholic drinks

The first scene of god of gamblers II is the god's protege playing blackjack with 4 decks and he draws 16 aces in a row and splits them all and then the house busts and he wins untold millions.

At the end of this movie they introduce a completely new, totally incidental gambler at one of the dice tables who also happens to have ESP and the movie just turns into duels between chow and this guy throwing chi blasts at dice

Lol "After the events in God of Gamblers II, Tai-kun, who lost his ESP powers, has regained the abilities again and seeks revenge against Sing, the Saint of Gamblers. When Tai-kun, aided by his fellow disciples, exerts ESP powers under full force against Sing who is doing likewise to them, the spacetime becomes distorted and sends Tai-kun and Sing to Shanghai in 1937." sounds Amazeballs

I only watched half of it because the video file was split into two parts and Plex couldn't figure out how to find subtitles for the second half which ticked me off. the story upnto that point though is that chow invented macdonalds in 1931 shanghai and irrevocably changed the course of history
