SaltyBet is a website that launched in roughly 2013 with the intent of allowing people to bet fake money on EVO matches and other fighting game events. In practice, however, 99% of the time it's actually betting on MUGEN AI vs. AI fights, because Twitch-streamed FGC events don't really happen all that often. If you're going "well that sounds extremely stupid," you're not really wrong. A large portion of the time, you're just watching two badly-coded Dragon Ball Z characters fight each other, or a lovely-looking Ryu versus some random anime character. However, SaltyBet has an absurdly loving massive cast of fighters, and some of them are absolutely loving magical. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBw3lTGNBuM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UHp1MFZffQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXK_LlkTIMg Okay so how does this dumb poo poo work The steps are as follows: 1) Go to saltybet.com. 2) Make an account. You don't have to use your SA details, though it might make it easier for other goons to recognize your bets. 3) Log in. You will now be able to bet on matches, with a starting pool of 400 Salty Bucks. (You will need a Twitch account as well to participate in the chat, but... honestly the chat is kind of extremely bad even by Twitch chat standards so you might not wanna.) Every 100 matches (or every couple hours in real-time), there's a tournament, where a random assortment of characters from a particular tier are thrown at each other in a bracket to see who comes out on top. Your tournament salt is totally separate from your regular salt and gets added on after the tournament, so go hog wild. After every tournament, there's 20 matches of "exhibitions" where people with Illuminati (more on that later) request matchups they'd like to see. Sometimes these are relatively normal (like, you might see a "canon match" between two characters from the same anime or two Street Fighter characters) but more often, they're completely bonkers poo poo like Galactus vs. the King from the Zelda CD-i games, or... well, honestly, just look at those videos, that's kind of what exhibs are generally like (regular matches tend to be more sane). I touched the poop, what the absolute hell are people talking about in chat? Are they even speaking English? SaltyBet has a... fairly insular community, and there's a lot of weird memes and slang terms that have developed from it in addition to the usual Twitch chat memes. Most of them are pretty obvious from context (for example, a potato is a character without working AI, and a potato match is a match between two potatoes), but you might be kind of lost until you've been there a little while. What are some fun characters to watch out for? (This is by no means a complete list, this is just to give a general idea.) Sad Claps - An edit of Cyclops from one of the Marvel vs. Capcom games, with a block of code in his states file that makes him absolutely lose his loving poo poo. Sad Claps matches are absolute madness and it's hilarious. He's also actually really good and usually a safe bet, because most other characters' AI has no clue how to deal with him basically breaking reality. Uppercut - A Ryu edit who's broken pretty similarly to Sad Claps, though not nearly as extreme. Uppercut is still loving hilarious, though. Rare Akuma - The benchmark for what constitutes a truly overpowered character. Nearly none of the roster can beat Rare Akuma, as one of the less bullshit things he does is a 999-hit instakill Raging Demon that teleports the victim to space. Dark Donald, above, is one of the only characters to even give him a close fight, and Dark Donald eventually literally broke MUGEN for Salty and had to be removed (if memory serves). Alter Amiba - Ghetto Warmachine - an edit of War Machine from one of the MvC games, except with an expanded moveset and an, uh, interesting sound pack. Gohan fight money - A hilariously lovely-looking Gohan from Dragon Ball Z. He's not actually good, but the use of "fight money" in his name makes people go wild for him. Veku - See Gohan fight money, but instead of having a funny name, Veku's a meme because he's complete garbage and almost never wins fights. He also looks hilarious on top of that. Giant katamari of random characters - exactly what you think it is from the name. It's got at least two Blankas and a giant Iron Man in it, and it attacks by launching into the air and landing on top of the other fighter, instakilling them. Anti-Guile Zangief - A Zangief that inexplicably can throw Sonic Booms. He's not actually very good against Guiles of the same tier, in spite of the name, which usually leads to some hilarious anger in chat. Get in the robot you idiot - A soldier guy, I think from the Alien vs. Predator arcade game, who has a mech suit ("the robot"). When in the robot, he's actually really strong and hard to kill; the problem is he doesn't start in the robot and his AI is generally not smart enough to actually get in it, hence the name. Yuri di AAAAA EX - A character from... uh, Saint Seiya, I think. He's not actually great, but he will spend the entirety of any given match screaming at the top of his loving lungs, which causes chat to start spamming "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA", which makes me cry laughing every time I see it. Sans (or Korean Sans, as chat refers to him) - Sans from Undertale. He dies in one hit, and essentially has to stunlock the gently caress out of the opponent to even have a prayer of winning. Do not bet on him. Seriously, don't, he can very occasionally cause an upset but it's not guaranteed or even common. I'm allergic to free games, how do I throw money at this so I don't break out in hives? There's a paid membership option called Illuminati, that costs $5 per month (with discounts and bonuses for buying more than one month at once). Illuminati increases the amount of bailout salt you get when you make a dumb all-in bet and lose, it allows you to see characters' winrates and stats during the betting period, it allows you to "unlock" characters out of the Compendium and buff or nerf their stats, and it gives you a spiffy gold name in the betting list. Honestly, if you're enjoying SaltyBet, Illuminati is a really good deal; it's not very expensive and it makes things a good bit less frustrating. I don't know if there are any offsite chats or resources, but if there are, by all means post them! This poo poo is incredible and I'd be really happy to commiserate over it with people without having to wade through the cesspit of Twitch chat. It's ok. I kind of lost interest when it seemed that most of the matches were between random rear end anime girls that I had never heard about. I will say this, the music that is played is top notch.

Saltybet is cool but the chat has become loving cancerous over the last couple years. It's consistently the saddest weeb-talk you've ever seen in your life, mixed with people talking about how they want to gently caress EVERY female character that comes up. The worst part is it's a total hugbox, and if you call them out for being disgusting toonfuckers they'll ban you. Like yeah, ban the people calling out the pedophiles, not the sickos talking about which moe has a nicer rear end. Good call. E: Just logged in and the chat was alternating between people insisting goku would beat superman in a fight, and whether the semi-realistic chick or the moe was more fuckable. It's ALWAYS like this now Noun Verber fucked around with this message at 03:46 on Mar 1, 2017 |

What in God's name? Maybe I'm just getting on at particularly good times but it's mostly been pretty normal, with the closest I've seen to that being people referring to the anime girls as "waifus." It's mostly bad for the signal-to-noise ratio. e: also the chat is worth it for Orochigoku9000's entire existence, dude is one of the better trolls I've seen in a while.

I occasionally poke my head in on this when my connection isn't making GBS threads itself all over Twitch, but yeah. Even compared to the chat from a year ago, a good half to 75% of the time it's either radio silence or poo poo. There's still bits of gold in the turd, but it's gradually choking on its own moe. Also, whenever Googoo's characters pop up it's still a great time.

My GF, myself and another friend streamed this on my livingroom TV and made our own betting matrix and turned it into a drinking game. My friend is a pretty huge weeb so I insisted he explain the back story of every vaguely anime character. What a great night.

Saltybet was so much fun during its early days. I favorited the matches that make me laugh every time, even to this day. Yet another terrible Brazilian DBZ MUGEN character has an unexpected comeback timed perfectly with Guile's theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSKUCuLkJLI Sonic, uh, "fights," Mike Tyson from Punch Out!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR0NiYX-dVY An absolutely broken character, Berserk, thinks it is even more completely broken than Rare Akuma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XBmnEt6qW8 Rare Akuma versus... a killer whale. Goes about how you'd expect.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1i_IQP7rrg My personal favorite is the absolute absurdity that was the first 2x Uppercut vs. 2x Sad Claps battle. Sad Claps like the OP said is just ridiculous to watch, but Uppercut is somehow even more ridiculous and hilarious. YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLJTUw9wxko I love Uppercut. He is true to his name. All his attacks are uppercuts. One of my favorite moments from this way back when it started was a match between Super Saiyan Gohan and someone else. The AI was really bad, so they got locked into this thing where the one character just kicked--over and over and over and over--while Gohan just stood there and blocked. It ran out half the time or so just doing this. Then, something amazing happens. Gohan powers up--he goes super saiyan. You think, "Here we go, he's gonna fight back." And...nope! It just goes back to blocking kicks, forever. I'm surprised Ronald McDonald isn't in the memorable characters list. It was always pretty funny for me to see him show up.

Used to really enjoy this, but for whatever reason I can't sign into Twitch from the SaltyBet site on Chrome. Works on Edge browser, and I can login to Twitch.tv just fine, so not sure where the issue is from. e: Figured it out; Chrome was set to block 3rd party cookies; adding an exception for the twitch.tv domains fixed it.
