What she didn't realise is she was offering John something even bigger than that - Let me take the money, and your dad will be investigated and removed/imprisoned, leaving you free of his worst demands, or return to the life that is eating you from the inside. And he chooses freedom, in both cases. Until he finds out his brother has been kidnapped...
