There is no mission to the Andromeda Galaxy. It's all fake. You are cast as the captain in a secret project to fake a mission. Hilarity ensues.

The sheer number of breakable parts on the robots in HZD is nuts. Like, all thise armor plates that you see on the models? Those aren't just a cosmetic part of the enemy. They can all be knocked off individually. Sometimes all at once, by an explosion. This game is really getting me my Monster Hunter part breaking fix.

Which is not only the stupidest thing ever, but also inaccurate since the game had 8 initial playable characters. Are you sure it wasn't gauntlet legends? Dark legacy was legends with double the content. Twice as many missions and twice and many base classes. Also it was really fun.

The original premis of Gears is super awesome. That humanity went out and colonized this planet and built a thriving civilization over hundreds of years. And then it turned out that hostile aliens had been hibernating deep underground since before they ever got there. Like, all the gleaming cities that were built, were built thinking they were alone on this planet. But it was never their planet. The locust had been there the whole time, doing what locust do: hibernating deep underground. Insects have lifespans measured in days and weeks, and yet cicadas sleep for 13-16 years before swarming to the surface. Gears is about what if a hostile humanoid race worked like cicadas. And that's a cool episode of star trek.

Character creator tools are really loving boring and tedious to use. Like, it's almost always impossible to tell from a slider's name what it's going to actually do. So you gotta gently caress with it to find out. But you don't know what any of the later sliders do, so sometimes you set a slider one way thinking it's the closes you're going to get to what you want, and then two tabs later another slider actually does the thing that you wanted and it's like "okay, so... should I go back and set that first slider to neutral so that I can gently caress with this one... or... gently caress I've been playing for 20 minutes and I'm not even playing the game yet gently caress this"

Lurdiak posted:For some reason this is common across most games with character creators, which is why awesome character creation options have become fairly rare in most modern games. For some brain damaged reason, most players do not even bother. What games should do is release the character creator like a week before the game comes out, so that people can gently caress with it while they wait for the game to come out.

I actually really like the cell stage though - scope-wise and feature-wise, it's a really nice, fully realised little top down microbe game. It's probably the best part of that whole game, honestly. gently caress Will Wright. Yeah, he's good and coming up with concepts for sandboxes. But fundamental aspects of game design seem to be beyond him. It seems like he's always banked on the idea that fun will be an emergent property of the systems he creates, but he never bothers to make systems that foster rewarding gameplay loops.

I didn't mind fighting humans anytime there was a normal fixed amount of them. There are a few story missions/setpiece events whete they spawn infinitly or in waves, and that's dumb. Put all the humans on the map and don't make more appear out of thin air and I don't mind.

And if I was gonna take my switch with me on a commute or something, it would make sense for it to have some of the basic features of a modern tablet because it has the size footprint of one. I was just surprised to learn that it really is just a nintento game machine without the features that every console from the last 2 generations has. You guys are right that it doesn't really matter. I've said this before, but I'm really dissappointed that all the batman games use a setting that fills the world only with enemies for batman to fight. It's always the apocalyptic Arkham setting. I want a batman game with a Gotham full of civilians just trying to get by and True Crime style random incidents. As Batman, you work "with" the police to clean up corruption and organized crime in Gotham. But two types of villains rise here: Criminals you bust, and civilians who you don't save. When a crime happens, sometimes the victim resents Batman for not saving them or their family or whatever.

Nasgate posted:... bloodychill posted:This is an incredibly insightful and I didn't think about third person character placement on screen in any indepth capacity until reading this. It's interesting to think about and you know the developers and designers put a ton of thought into this stuff. It's neat to think back through why they make the decisions they do because of where they want the player focused or how they want them to experience the game and characters. I'm not saying this is wrong, but I think it's worth pointing out that Horizon is a shooter, so you don't want the player character centered in the camera, you want potential targets to naturally be centered as the player looks at them. Some 3rd person shooters, especially early ones, have the character more centered and obstructing more of the view. Horizon also has enemies that are almost always larger than the player character by a significant margin, so offsetting the character from the center of the frame makes it easier to frame these large targets unobstructed. In a melee action game, target obstruction and framing isn't nearly as important. The exact position of the player character in relation to enemies is what informs the players choices, so centering them makes more sense. It gives the player a more consistent view of the characters immediate surroundings. Link isn't going to back-peddle off a cliff nearly as easily as Aloy. But I bet Aloy has better target acquisition while manually aiming ranged weapons. I haven't played BotW, so I don't know too much about Link's ranged options.
