It was old enough they marketed it as a surgical antiseptic when that was still a novel idea, but it didn't commercially take off until they marketed it as a mouthwash. I never tried the brown version, but I'm old enough to remember when mint was introduced.

I grew up with the amber Listerine. When they came out with mint it was too late, I already switched to normal minty mouthwash that doesn’t destroy your mouth. Had to gargle that poo poo when I had a sore throat  That and salt water.

In the early days of Pixar, they got contacted to make a Listerine commercial. This was back when yellow death was the only flavor. During a staff meeting one of the animators or engineers or whatever, some underpaid wunderkind smartass, picked up an open bottle that was in the room as a visual aid and chugged the whole thing in one go, causing all the executives to freak out. He had previously replaced the Listerine with apple juice.

When I was a kid my one friend's dad was so deep in toxic masculinity that it looped back around to earnestly listening to Macho Man by the Village People because he was a big macho guy. He would do poo poo like use a 40 year old push mower because making something easy is bad. He liked the brown Listerine because it tasted bad, and things should be difficult and uncomfortable.
