To be honest, I prefer having the royal family to the alternative, which to my mind is people like Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson ending up as president because enough people decide they're "classic legends" or whatever. That's probably just me, though.

Samovar posted:Wasn't that reputed to be a red hot spear/bar to boot? But yeah, it's as likely as that one king who drowned in a barrel if wine. Edmund Ironside (who was a pre-Norman King of England) is supposed to have been stabbed by an assassin who was hiding in his toilet pit. Richard II is the one who was alleged to have been killed when a group of assassins stuck a red hot poker up his rear end while the one who was supposedly drowned in butt of wine was the Duke of Clarence, who was the brother of Edward IV.

Eugenics was considered good science once upon a time and it cut across the political spectrum. George Bernard Shaw, the arch-socialist, was an ardent advocate, for instance, because he believed eugenics could help to "uplift" the poor. William Beveridge was giving a pro-eugenics lecture to the British Eugenics Society in London on the same night the Beveridge report (credited with laying the foundations for the British welfare state) was debated in parliament. William Jennings Bryan's opposition to the theory of evolution was founded on his opposition to eugenics - which was often justified by reference to Darwin's theory - almost as much as his religious fundamentalism. Then along came the Nazis who showed what the logical conclusion of eugenics as policy would be (industrialised mass murder) and people wised up.

JEEVES420 posted:Talking to ER staff you hear all the horrors of humanity. I learned about a homeless guy named Side Pocket who would whore out his colostomy hole. There's a bit in The Life and Times of Little Richard (the mid-1980s biography of Little Richard) where he describes his first gay experience as a teenager in the 1940s: quote:Madame Oop would french you. He'd suck you and tell you that he had a vagina and if you'd be nice he'd let you get some of it. You know, an older man telling you that, and you're a young guy... You see, he'd been with so many men that his rectum had been torn out and was no use anymore, so they'd put a colostomy in his side and he used his rectum as a vagina. He proceeds to describe how after he became famous he would have massive orgies where he'd sit and read his Bible in between "[trying to] turn boys gay" by "making love to them in the rectum". The last chapter is just a transcript of a sermon he gave in 1984 where he explains that homosexuality is "contagious" and claims he "turned gay" because his mother didn't love him enough.
