How did Carolina not move on from Cam Ward last offseason? It seemed like the most obvious thing in the world to do and instead they gave him a 2-year $6.6M contract to be one of the worst goalies in the league (again).

Yes if anything the NHL needs more playoff teams. Because more than half simply isn't enough.

Get rid of the playoffs and award the Stanley Cup to the best regular season team. Retroactively apply this new rule from, say, 2009-10 until now.

I'm okay with the goal standing because Orpik is a loving moron who always checks forwards into his own goalie and the Capitals deserve it for playing Orpik over Nate Schmidt. Orpik had a play on the puck to clear it but instead was too busy pushing the Dallas guy into Holtby.

Sounds like Tanner Glass needs some top 6 time IMO. Can't ever have enough grit at the top of your lineup, especially in the playoffs.

Make it so that the goalie doesn't have a glove, but rather two blocker pads.

Eliminating offsides wouldn't just allow for cherry picking, it would allow for more creative transition plays and odd-man rushes.

Also it would eliminate offside reviews by definition.

speaking of ovi what's up with him? he's on pace to score like, 33 goals this season. did he just get tired of winning the rocket richard or something? obviously 33 is a pretty good number of goals to score but by ovechkin standards thats a little low

He's been bad and possibly injured but Trotz hasn't really done him many favors either. Ovechkin is much better with Kuznetsov than Backstrom in almost every measurable way but until tonight he's rarely played with anyone but Backstrom.

It's funny to make jokes about the Capitals winning another Presidents Trophy, but this year seems like a really nice year to win the Presidents Trophy. A home series against like the Islanders or Leafs seems a whole lot better than the Penguins or Jackets in the first round. Though I'd be terrified if the Lightning get the WC2 spot, even though it would be nice for me since I live near Tampa and could go to all of the games.

Whatever Alzner gets this offseason is going to be way too much. He can play okay defense and block some shots but he very much was propped up by playing alongside Matt Niskanen for a few years (and Holtby being very good), and now that he isn't partners with Niskanen, surprise he stinks! He's also coming off major groin surgery last year and his mobility is much worse. He's going to get $5M+ and whoever gives it to him will immediately regret it IMO.

I mean this with all honesty: I'm not sure Alzner is better than Brooks Orpik. And he certainly shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as good defensive D like Hjalmarsson, Vlasic, Braun, Tanev, etc. He doesn't make catastrophic blunders but he has a dramatic negative impact on the Capitals offense.

In a league where like 75% of teams are in the playoffs or fighting for a spot, that Blues schedule only contains two. That's pretty impressive.

The Penguins only chance is to face Washington in the first round since that's a guaranteed victory no matter the circumstances. That could buy enough time for their other players to get healthy enough for a deep run. Columbus has a much better chance of beating Pittsburgh.

I think Bruce Boudreau is a really good coach but I really just don't know how you leave Ovechkin wide-open 3 times on the PP in his spot. Like...you coached the dude for 5 seasons and literally like half of his goals are from that spot. It's no secret he's going to try to sock a few dingers from the left dot.

That's some Dave Hakstol level coaching up of the penalty kill.

I wasn't even that excited by the hat trick, it came so easily.

The hero of that game was Oshie. It's going to be so different next year if they can't find a guy that can finish like he can, both in the slot, from the circles and in the shootout.

Earlier in the year I was 100% in favor of letting Oshie walk this offseason but now I'm not so sure. Yeah he's shooting 24% but he shot 14% last season and still scored 26 goals and the Capitals don't really have someone who can step in and take his spot.

I dunno maybe MacLellan can fleece another GM in a trade to get a top-line RW this offseason.

Ovechkin doesn't even board or charge people any more. Tom Wilson is the new shithead on the Capitals and I think he took Parise's eye last night.

Advanced stats say the Bruins are an excellent team who have received some poo poo goaltending and poor shooting luck. I wouldn't be down on their chances, and in fact as a Caps fan I'd rather the Caps play any of the other potential WC2 teams before Boston, including Tampa Bay. I'd count on Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Oshie to be effective against most teams except Boston whose first line is probably the best in the NHL and could realistically shut them down.

Yeah and that's exactly why I don't want to play them. Yeah if like MAF were the starter you could expect his run of lovely play to continue, but I'm not really convinced Rask is going to keep playing below average when he's always been one of the better goalies in the league, just behind the Price/Holtby/Lundqvist tier for most of his career. If they get decent goaltending they would have much better results.

I really don't expect that trend to continue given his career.
