I thought the trade deadline was only the end of the period in which you could trade players and have them still be eligible to participate in the playoffs, and that actually you can trade year round except for the Christmas roster freeze?

theres also a roster freeze at the all star break

I understand the idea that "faceoff wins" purely as a stat isn't perfectly indicative of gaining possession, though. I think Tyler Dellow had done some work on that along with zone entries shortly before the Oilers bought his silence? If anyone has any links/references related to this stuff, either fancystats or video, I'd love to see them since I find this little aspect of the game fascinating.

i think most of his stuff is lost to time, but hes back writing for the athletic on similar topics

But the goals per game is pretty much unchanged for the last 10 years (change from season to season is generally a couple hundredths of a point) so that just means the points are being spread among more players.. which is actually cool and good.

I wonder how much TOI has to do with it. The top scorers used to regularly average 20 or more minutes a night. Now look at the top. There's a few guys like Mcdavid and Kane doing that but there's also a ton of guys averaging less than 20. When Ovechkin scored 65 goals he played 23 minutes a night. When Sid hit 120 he played 20:46. This year Sid plays about a minute less at 19:46 and Mcdavid plays just around 21 mins a night which is on the high end of ice time.

Teams just don't lean on star players as much as they used to it seems. And of course there's less powerplays.

e: btw I still find it absolutely insane that Bure averaged 26:52 of ice time in 2000-01. Fuckin lol.

its not like anyone else was doing anything with those minutes

Burrows posted a farewell to Vancouver on playerstribune yesterday. There's uh, some feels there.

quote:

People mention that I went undrafted, sometimes, as shorthand for my underdog path to the NHL. But the truth is, a lot of guys go undrafted. That’s not even the full picture.

Here’s the full picture: When I got my shot with the Canucks in 2006 … I was still only a few years removed from calling my mom, crying — because I had just been traded to a team (in the hockey hotbed of Baton Rouge) that was literally going out of business. I was still only a couple of years removed from thinking seriously about returning to school — and just calling it quits altogether. And I was still only a single year removed from bouncing around between the AHL and ECHL — I even have my own “I had a plane ticket booked to head back down a level, before the coach liked what he saw and told me to stick around a few more days” story to prove it.

So, you have to understand: When I got called up to Vancouver, I wasn’t just undrafted. I was un-everything.
