Dallas is dead. Lost season, and all that.

Imma follow the fancy cats down the stretch. Who's fun in the west rn? I was enjoying watching Winnipeg bust heads but they're also dead now.

Can the twins be traded, tho? I mean, unless you break them up, even with a decent chunk of salary being retained, who can afford them both? Even if they could retain 50 percent on each contract they still gotta eat like 7 mil for this season and next.

And, like, who wants half the Sedins?

Plus they only got one retention slot left, so whatever team would have to eat over 10m in cap hit next year. So, presuming they do move them a big contract or two has to come back. What does that trade look like? You're getting two (aging) hall of famers, cap relief, and dumping one or two bad contracts. I'd have to think the return would need to be pretty drat high. And, after all, it's only a year of old Sedins.

I don't really see how it could work out from any perspective. Well, unless Benning goes all Benning and ships then away for two old, poo poo players, retains salary, and throws in a couple picks and prospects for the hell of it.

but you could have one team retain 50% and another team retain 50% on top of that, though you couldn't take it further because a player can only have salary retained by up to two teams

i have a hard time imagining how such a scenario would happen without everybody involved getting smacked down for their obvious collusion but i guess it's technically possible

Is the second retention applied to the principle or the balance?

Like player x has a cap hit of 1 mil. Team a trades him to team b and retains 50, making team b's cap hit .5 mil. When team B trades him to team c and retains 50% is teams c's hit .25 mil or 0?

If it's the latter, can this sort of deal go down in a 3-way trade or does it need to be two separate deals?

Dallas last season was the most entertaining non playoff hockey in decades. Every other game would end 6-5 with the lead changing hand multiple times in the third.

I like a close checked game and blah blah, but all else the same, I'll take the game with more goals, every time.

Let's not talk about this season.

Okay, we should make the draft secret as well. I mean, feelings might get hurt if a player doesn't get selected as high as another.

Oh, and free agency tells players what their peers are worth. That could hurt their feelings too! Better make all contracts secret.

I disagree with you. If they keep it secret, it would be one of the few things the NHL does that isn't bush league. It's disrespectful, can be hurtful and there's literally no benefit other than creating a spectacle. Using the draft to rationalize it doesn't make sense. That happens before they are employees of the team. I also disagree with the idea that part of what the players get compensated for is to endure public scrutiny and to forfeit privacy in regard to their contract. That actually seems pretty lovely to me.

On the other hand I'm really curious and I love the spectacle so I hope it's all public.

Hockey is a blood sport. The whole thing is a loving spectacle. That's literally the point and the only reason the NHL and all other major leagues exist.

Ties are dumb and extra points are dumb. I've always seen anything after regulation as a means to ending a game, not some goal to aim for that results in consolation points (kinda like how they do the playoffs!).

How about this craaaazy idea: 1 point for a win, 0 for a loss. gently caress ROW as a tie-breaker, gimme heads to head or goals scored or whatever.

And if we're going to entertain a 3 point system, why not 5?
Regulation win - 5
OT win - 4
SO win - 3
OT loss - 2
SO loss - eliminated from playoff contention.

Not exactly like they play a dozen games a season and losing a few coin flips will routinely make a huge difference.

I'm only behind ties if they result in no points for anyone. You win the game you get a point.

Eeeeeh, they got it done! last season with the tire fire goaltending.. and a lot of luck and timely comebacks. As much as I hate the two-headed Finn, I think the problem right now is Nill. His failure to address the quality walking and the general state of the d corps in the offseason is probably the real reason this year went to poo poo.
