Thing I learned from tonight's very bad and boring "rivalry game": Chicago employs a gentleman named Schmaltz. As an aside, is it a rivalry because Pittsburgh crushed Chicago in the SCF in the 90's?

My fav part of that video is watching the three defenders stack up in the slot leaving that dude time to just pick a corner. Like goalie doesn't challenge, defenders don't even stick check him until the shot is already in the net.

Honestly, from a business standpoint it makes more sense. Just like the loser point. Make a bad team seem competitive so a casual fan has a rooting interest because they have theoretical chance. Adding a play in game does this just as well. (It's a terrible fuckin idea from a hockey fan's perspective but if you wanna argue dollars, it puts more money in everyone's pockets. I know this as someone who experienced this phenomenon by being Pittsburgh Pirate fan adjacent for the past 5 years.)

Thufir posted:Yeah IIRC someone figured the best guys add like 5-6 expected goals a season. I mean if you are strictly speaking goals, sure. But what about the defensive aspect of a good face off guy on the PK or a clean face off win starting the cycle in the offensive zone keeping the opposing team hemmed in their own zone. I mean the crux of your previous statement boils down to "it doesn't matter who has possession of the puck."

Best tool in a ref toolbox is being a passive aggressive dick and kicking the face off dude out. It's real good as a low stakes punitive measure. Also, throwing a good face off dude against a fuckin plugger will more then 50% of the time will result in the plugger losing the draw and also be switched positions with the center.

glynnenstein posted:Ovechkin is also playing 2 minutes less a night as a result of both an intentional strategy to try to save him for the postseason more than in years past and because the team needs him less than it ever has with solid contributions from the other lines, especially the third. I mean, why don't they wait until the third round of the playoffs when they won't need him at all?

My favorite hockey fact right now is the reward for being the third best team in the league is playing the 2nd best team in the league in the first round.

How happy would Washington be If Boston fell out of the playoffs and the Lightning sneak into the 2nd wildcard? I hear they really like to play the Lightning, almost as much as the Rangers.

I feel good for the Jackets, I really do. Lumbus is in just as an economically depressed area as the rest of us rust belt assholes but hasn't been able to pour their stress and fear into a pro-sports team and for the briefest of fleeting days feel like life is fulfilling. Not monotonous droning of disappointment and responsibility. "We did it boys," somebody who is definitely not projecting might say, "now we can rest."

Mind_Taker posted:I think Bruce Boudreau is a really good coach but I really just don't know how you leave Ovechkin wide-open 3 times on the PP in his spot. Like...you coached the dude for 5 seasons and literally like half of his goals are from that spot. It's no secret he's going to try to sock a few dingers from the left dot. Literally every time it's brought up, you cannot have someone camp out on Ovechkin on the circle. You are giving up an incredibly likely goal to stop a somewhat less likely goal. It doesn't make sense, which is why you've never seen ANYONE do it. You think the PK coaches are like, "gently caress me, how come we never watched video of their powerplay!"

Okay, for our OilAS friends, the Stanley Cup playoffs is played in a best of 7 games series between 16 seeded teams with the winner of 4 games in a series advancing to the next round matched up against a winner of a different series. 16 games are needed to win the Stanley Cup! Good luck and have fun!
