This was hands down the best marvel comicbook film ever made, I saw it yesterday and absolutely loved every minute of it. X2 was the best X-Men ensamble movie, but this was a character study and is in alot of ways not a fair comparison; but as far as the marvel standalone movies go, this was the best. It's probably a new gold standard for some of the character movies if it makes enough money, like what Iron Man did to what would become the MCU Avengers setting in terms of style. Hugh Jackman got nominated for an Oscar with Les Miserables, and lost to Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln (no surprise there since he was pretty much unbeatable). What Jackman brought for Logan was the best preformance of his career, it was intense and emotional from start to finish. I'd be shocked if this didn't atleast earn him another nomination. Same goes for Patrick Stewart and Dafne Keen, hell the acting from the three main characters was fantastic across the board. However, Logan did everything it could to divorce itself from genre movies like the rest of the comic book stuff. I went to see it with a mixed crowd, some were not big comic book fans and basically unfamiliar with the X-Men films with this being the first one they saw. They all liked it, it really works as a sci-fi western in alot of ways and it didn't take some origin story infodump to make sense of Logans character or even Professor X.

The two scenes/shots in the movie that made me laugh were: Logan smashing up his car in an impotent rage after failing to get the words out when eulogizing Charles. The fact that it was shot from the p.o.v. of Laura who was just standing there at the other side of the road watching it all made it all ten times better than it could have been. We could really get a grip on Logans feelings at the time without him saying a single coherent phrase or the director shoving it in our face with tearstained closeups, melodramatic music and all that bullshit. The second was in the opening when Logan took a bullet for his car since he didn't own it and couldn't work in a shot to bits limo, as well as when he got pissed after that one guys shotgun blast hit the door in the same scene. Hell yeah, thankfully critics arent quite that jaded and can actually recognise quality narratives and craftmanship when it shows up on the big screen. Logan was a good movie, it has some minor plot holes that are very nitpicky in nature but thats it. It doesnt need "an awesome villan" to work, hell having someone like Sabertooth in it would totally detract from the story and the central theme of logan finding his humanity again and the parental bonds between Logan and the main supporting characters.
