I actually wonder if the endgame is more like "Jack can return home and fix things there, but the damage Aku did will remain in another universe" kind of time travel.

Well that and there was that one episode that was an adaptation of/homage to 300 about half a decade before the Zack Snyder movie came out.,

Speaking of that episode, I wonder if that will also play a role.

At the end of the episode the old king is recounting the fight.

If I could have only one thing absolutely happen in this season, it'd be Da Samurai making a dramatic comeback, slicing up a bunch of Aku's minions and being almost as skilled as Jack.

But I don't see it actually happening.

It's been a very long time since I read Ronin, but I'm pretty sure it involves a samurai being flung into the future by an evil demon who kills his master.

My two cents on the mounted samurai: I agree with the people who think it's not evil. It just doesn't give me the proper vibe for that, it feels more like it's silently judging Jack for his failure. It might be the part of him that never turned it's back on the hope of getting to the past.

Speaking of which, holy poo poo I just realized the reason why Scaramouche gives up at the end of his fight with Jack:

Jack purposely threw the sword to explode near Scaramouche's neck to disable him. His neck is mangled because of it and can't scat-sing nor does he have any weapons left to fight Jack.

Jack is straight up butchering a defenseless opponent who surrendered to him in cold blood.

No, but this is pretty different from how Jack handled robots before -- without fanfare or expounding on honorable samurai ethics. It's not about sparing the robot or not but how they get destroyed this time around.

I think it's intentional why they added the Horror movie-style music when Scaramouche's head pops off. Jack is more of a killer than a samurai at this point, and I think that's going to be even more explicit in the next episode, not to mention the shadowy samurai-figure in his hallucinations.

When I was a lad,I remember me and my mom sitting at the TV and watching the old show whenever it was on. So of course, we were both excited in different ways when I heard about the reboot.I was a little ambivalent towards the M FOR MATURE angle they were marketing, but I intended to give the show a watch to see if it was any good, or edgy garbage, like mom kept proclaiming it would be. Basically, she hated it the moment it was announced, and agreed to watch it with me just so she could prove me wrong. When we watched the opening action sequence, she kept talking poo poo about it. Stuff like "This is 'Murica! We don't know what 'good storytelling' is! We love violence and explosions! Hoooweeee!" in her mean-spirited impression of a Southern accent (we're Canadian). She also kept bitching and moaning about the soundtrack: "Back when Samurai Jack was good there were actually scenes with no music at all. I guess Americans need obnoxious music at all times. Murica!" then she went on another hateful rant. Only parts she liked were the visions and the Scaramouche fight. Or rather, the second half, after he broke his flute. "Why did he summon a stupid rock man? What is this,Star Wars?" Also, she's actually rooting for the cultists because, and I quote "this is not the real Jack." Basically,my enjoyment of the new series is gonna be set back by my cynical cow mother. :sigh: At least I have my cool aunt who I watch Jojo with sometimes.

No static at all...
I think there is an argument to be made that the series has become a certain kind of pornographic. It's increasingly worrying the number of IPs that just won't leave, and maybe Samurai Jack is one of them. I think it's too early to tell, and I think there's compelling evidence that the new season isn't a cash in and will be a sound conclusion. But, like the Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, X-Men, Star Wars, etc. these franchises are decades old and way past their novelty.

-Concluding the story being the main reason this season exists
-This season being a 10 episode miniseries

So wait, is it a thing that people think this is a soulless cash grab? Despite it being an episodic series infamously left without conclusion and its creator saying the whole point of this is to give the show a proper ending because it's fans deserve that much? A series whose original intent was to push artistic animation over marketable animation?

Huh.

Jack was always comically nonreactive (until it came time to use the sword), but I think the difference is that originally Jack acted out in a Japanese-style politeness. Now it's more of a quiet "I loving hate you".

Well to be fair it's not like Genndy Tartakovsky has done anything particularly successful since Samurai Jack ended:

-The Clone Wars shorts were good but "the best thing to come out of the Star Wars prequels" is the definition of faint praise, especially when they wound up being overshadowed critically and financially by the CGI series that came out a few years later.

-Korgoth of Barbaria was an amazing pilot but after years of teasing Adult Swim never actually made it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaqjS_IvLpg

-Sym-Bionic Titan bombed hard because it was a nostalgia piece for something that was older than the parents of most of the people watching it, padded out with a bunch of cookie-cutter teen drama. It didn't even get to coast by on the animation because it reached almost John K levels of overly-stylizing the main characters to the point of grotesqueness, and the actual robot fights were all really obvious CGI. The backgrounds were pretty, at least.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U008nGT0eww

-He storyboarded the fight scenes for Iron Man 2, which is almost universally regarded as the worst Marvel Cinematic Universe movie and had fights that were mostly just invincible robot men ponderously bumping into each other or mowing down waves of drones with no real tension or excitement.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZWzf3h50LU

-He did the animated intro to Priest, which was a garbage movie that nobody cared about or saw. His part was pretty sweet, at least.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6zFGio6kRg

-Hotel Transylvania made a bunch of money and is supposedly OK for little kids but whatever, it was openly just him trying to make a safe and commercially-successful studio film so it's hard to really hold it against him.

-He spent three years on making a Popeye movie with Sony Animation only to walk away with it over conflict with the studio.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1lzJuwJD9k

People returning to their last success after over a decade of false starts, failures, and safe studio work is almost always something that gives you mediocre sequels and cash-ins rather than something actually inspired. Samurai Jack has been great but it's definitely the exception rather than the norm.
