I Failed At Anime 2022

Consoles: PS3, PS4
Release Dates: (JP) September 15, 2016; (WW) April 4, 2017

Persona is the 6th Entry in the Persona franchise that has now cannibalized Atlus' other game series. Persona 5 is a different game in a lot of ways from its predecessors, but it is also still very similar in others. The tone, setting, themes, characters and whatnot have all had a massive shift in both stakes and scope. I'm gonna keep this opening section short and simple so we can get to what's new and I can drop some tips for the game and whatnot.

Story
Persona 5 takes place in Tokyo, Japan and follows another Silent Protagonist during his year of attending Shujin High School after being put on probation for assaulting a stalker. During this time he will makes friends, allies, and stop authority figures in the abuse of their power through his nighttime identity of the Phantom. As the Phantom the protagonist and his allies roam around the night known as, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, and take the hearts of any wrongdoers in Tokyo. In doing this they must infiltrate Palaces and use their Persona to defeats their targets.

Setting and Calendar System

The Persona series is no stranger to dank cities and Persona 5 ups the scope by bringing our main setting to the dankest of them all in Japan, Tokyo. In P5, you live in a small dinky cafe in some alley in Shibuya, Same as previous Persona games you spend your day to day life doing whatever the hell you want between defeating the hell beasts of the human psyche. Whether it be fishing, eating taiyaki, going to an amusement park, what the gently caress ever, just do it. In the image above this paragraph you will see the game's map of Tokyo. You can head to every location in that map, only certain ones are actually explorable though as everything else is either a mini-game or a place to hangout with your confidants. Your explorable locations are Shibuya, Yongenjaya, Shinjuku, Aoyama Itchome, and Roppongi. Not all of these locations are accessible from the start, they will open up as you progress through the game and you can open others through reading news articles on the train or books or just through general conversation with confidants.

The calendar system works exactly the same as it has in P3 and P4, but due to now being set in Tokyo, the game has the most bustling night life of any of the games in the series. Beyond being able to roam around the city and night and do whatever, there are multiple night time exclusive confidants for you to interact with and get to know. Certain jobs you can take, eat burgers, and hell maybe even see a movie or two. In a game like this though, quick travel is essential and the game provides it from the start. Anywhere you head to in Tokyo you're able to quick travel to and this goes the same for dungeons as well. Dungeon exploration is still however relegated to daytime only and there are a lot of points in the game your character will not be able to perform night actions due to daytime events like dungeon crawling or story events following that night.

Dungeons, Palaces, and Mementos

The Dungeons in P5 have received a massive change. Gone are the days of walking obliquely through a randomly designed small area. Modern-day Persona now has actual dungeon design, pulling the extravagances of location more from P1 and P2 with amazingly abstract architecture and platforming. The dungeons in Persona 5 are known as Palaces and they are twisted versions of their original image made by those with the strength of will to twist it to their innermost desires. A Palace is infested with shadows, the Shadow Selves of their creators, and cognitive existences, existences based on those the creator is familiar with in the real world, but twisted to their pleasure. Each dungeon is a reflection in some way of the creator of the palace in a similar way the Midnight Channel was to its creators, but on a much grander scale. Palaces will be the main battleground of the Phantom Thieves and in infiltrating they have some semblance of agility. The Phantom Thieves are able to leap from platform to platform, hop up onto ledges, and even be stealthy and tear the faces off of shadows. You will use all of these to overcome the Palace. Word to the wise though, Palaces are never finished once you reach the end of them. Once you get to the end you will be forced out until you call out the creator and then you will be able to confront the Palace Boss and finish it. Also, due to the larger structures of the dungeons in P5, there are now safe rooms. These safe rooms are effectively checkpoints that give you an area to save and you can quick travel from safe room to safe room once you get access to them. There are no hard guidelines by which palace's follow, they all have their own puzzles and gimmicks and it's up to you to traverse them and make it to the top.

Also awaiting you is Mementos, a Palace of the collective consciousness of society. Did I say randomly-generated dungeons were gone? I lied. Mementos is an entirely random set of dungeons that unlock as you progress through the game in very much the same way Taratarus did in P3. Here you can level grind, obtain any demons you missed, and do requests. Mementos is very odd in that it doesn't seem very much like a key component of the game, but it actually is. Here is where you will spend time dungeon crawling to do missions to progress your confidants and move those further along. All of the demons in Mementos are ones you've already fought before as well, so you can get anything you missed from a Palace in here. Finally, the dungeon is plot critical as well, so the game is gonna want you to do it too. Do not slack off on Mementos or you are going to regret when the game inevitably forces you into completing it. Thankfully though if you are able to find exits you can fast travel to them and the rewards in Mementos are never so good you can't just speed to the exit if you want.

Combat, Fusion, and Demon Negotiation

P5 combat at its heart is still the same, but it's made a lot of QoL changes and feels much smoother and fluid giving the game a nicer ebb and flow. The menu select is gone from basic choices, now all of your combat options are on face buttons or shoulder buttons. What this means is you just hit the attack button and select a target and confirm the attack or hit the Persona button and it brings up a list of Persona, etc. Persona 5 now has new elements, along with some returning ones. There have also been some changes to old stuff as well, the list of changes is long so I'm just gonna make a neat little list.

-Old Elements now have status effects and advantages for other elements
-Fire inflicts Burn which deals damage after actions and increases Wind and Nuclear damage
-Ice can now cause Freeze which makes enemies inactive and kills their physical resistance for a turn. Increased damage on Physical and Nuclear attacks, wears off after the victim takes damage.
-Electricity can cause Shock which stuns enemies for a turn and increases physical and nuclear damage. Using melee attacks on shocked enemies though has a chance of inflicting the attacker with shock, as well.
-New elements in this game are returning from older Persona games and other Megaten ones: Gun, Nuclear. Psychic does more damage on enemies with psychologically inflicted ailments (Read: everything except Burn, Shock, Freeze, and one mystery ailment) and Nuclear does more to physical ailments (Aka everything else).
-Light and Dark have been expanded upon. They are no longer instant death elements. but now have damage spells as well making them just like every other element.
-A multitude of abilities granted by Confidants that will be mentioned in their specific sections
-Everything gets up after being knocked down on its next turn. The only ways turns are skipped entirely now is through freeze or shock.
-Baton Pass is a new mechanic that can be activated upon getting an extra turn after hitting an enemy's weakness. The rules are:
-You can pass your extra turn onto another teammate
-It buffs attack and healing
-It can only be passed to a character once, no infinite passing
-It multiplies as you keep passing it along the team
-You can change Persona during the pass
-All Out Attacks work a bit differently, but is mostly the same.
-Once you knock down all enemies you will go into Hold Up. Once in Hold Up, three options will be presented to you.
-All Out Attack
-Demon Negotiation
-If you feel the Negotiation is going south you can cancel into all out attack at any point and just end the fight as you normally would.
-Cancel and go back into the regular fight.
-MC game over is still around, but enemies WILL go in for the kill on him if you give them the chance to This game's still pretty easy, but it's also very feast or famine, especially when it comes to the MC.
-There is an auto weakness target that will immediately select enemies with weaknesses you can exploit and go over to the ability it can hit the weakness with. With the MC it will even switch his Persona automatically too.
-There is an auto-heal button out of battle that will take the most cost effective method towards healing your party (AKA pull SP from not main party members first).
-The navigator has more in team relevance similar to Rise in P4G, but they become very prominent in combat even at base Confidant level.
-There is a brand new ailment in this game that I will not say what it is because it's better for you to find out for yourself, but it is hilarious.
-Guns have ammo and it is refreshed by leaving dungeons. It is generally better to save ammo for weakness targetting than random use. It's easy to tell what enemies are weak to guns though as they usually are winged enemies.
-Your progress through dungeons is tracked and when you leave a dungeon the game will list what all you accomplished while there.
-There is no Fox in this game so your SP healing in dungeons is much more scarce meaning you may have to leave a dungeon to regenerate once in a while.

These are most of the combat changes + a few dungeon ones I felt fit here, but a significant amount of things has changed and for the better, I feel.

On the fusion and demon negotiation side of things, P5 has brought Demon Negotiation back, but it's unfortunately more traditional SMT negotiation and not P1 and P2 "Hold a rock concert for a demon and imitate motorcycle noises" negotiation. It's pretty simply just talking to do the demons and recruiting them now as opposed to fusing them and getting them off of random cards, pretty easy stuff. The Fusion has change somewhat, you still have your multiple fusion types, but now you can feed other demons to level up your current Persona, or put Persona in solitary confinement for a while to give them extra abilities or even melt some demons into items and weapons.

HERE IS THE PS3 AND PS4 COMPARISON STOP ASKING
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKbMW9lPwq4

Basically there's a few less people in the city and loading times are a bit longer, that's p much it.

SOCIAL STAT TIPS AND EATING MY rear end IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS
-Go to the theaters only once a month each one drops a +3 on the stat that it enhances. Going to the diner on a rainy day is a good idea since you get +3 knowledge which can turn into +4 if you have Chihaya stuff and a + to another stat of your choice as well.
Big Bang Burger gives a nice generalization of stats as well, but will emphasize courage.
-Doing certain confidants also gives a large amount of stats. You can get kindness by doing Hierophant and Tower, Proficiency for Hanged Man, Courage for Death, Charm for Devil and Sun, and Knowledge for Star.
This is with every rank up though so be mindful of that.
-Finally, Proficiency and Kindness are some of the more difficult stats to level up. For the former doing the beef bowl job, making thief tools, and going to the batting cages is not a bad idea. For the latter you can do the Flower Shop job and feed your plant which is a free action
-Go to the underground walkway every sunday to spend 5k on a juice that will give you a stat boost, this is a free action and worth doing.
-Getting Fortune to about 3 is also worthwhile since you can give her 5k, pick a stat, and any action you do that involves that stat will get an increase. Be mindful it only really works on +1 things, but you can use this in conjunction with going to the diner on a rainy day or studying in the library and maximize what you get for the day.

That's most of the advice I can give.

IT'S OUT FUCKERS

This game kind of sounds like exactly what I hoped it would be, bringing back some of the battle complexity of the older Persona games and demon negotiation while modernizing JRPG features and iterating on the incredibly stylish art and design work of P3/P4.

Of all the badass stuff coming out in Q1 and Q2 2017 this is at the absolute top of the list

Atlus has very recently had a policy of "give reviewers a fuckload of time to review this poo poo". They mentioned it on Reddit a while back that they were planning on giving out review copies for Apocalypse a month in advance and I'm not surprised it's happened here as well.

It's not gonna be the shortest game, March is a busy month, playing video games is not the only thing they're going to do and I somehow doubt that they're worried about spoilers because the game's been out for 6 months already.

A month doesn't seem over the top by any stretch.
