The war was about slavery, but not only in the moral sense, also because the agricultural South benefitted a lot more economically from slavery than the industrial North. In this way, abolition was a way to shift the power dynamic in the Union towards the North.

The slave owners were in praxis aristocrats but unlike their European colleagues they weren't content to tying the serfs to the land they had to literally own them. The Civil War was about slavery and about a weirdo quasi-feudalist state fighting an industrialised capitalist one.

I still remember the old mini series with Richard Chamberlain. So glad I can still understand references without engaging directly with new media thanks to an endless barrage of remakes and reimaginings. Looking forward to memes about the new Talented Mister Ripley adaptation, too.

Ripley and Shogun (the new ones) are incredibly good. Ripley is some of the best television I have ever seen. It's absolutely gorgeous, and the adaptation and acting are top notch. It's more like like an 8 hour film rather than a short TV series. Cannot stress just how gorgeous it is.
