While AOT S2 will probably be OK at worst (though I certainly don't trust the director to improve on the second arc), it seems almost inevitable that the thread will be really, really bad.

Hi, I'm the normie, nice to meet you

The first half of AOT S2 will include some of the raddest action in the manga. Apart from that, there's always Hero Academia and Rage of Bahamut. Maybe ID-0 as well.

Kind of surprised that Souryo to Majiwaru is even showing up in the season listings. The source material is straight-up porn.

a work having explicit sex doesn't make it porn, what makes it porn is how that sex is framed. i havent read the original but it runs in a josei magazine and seems to have some kind of plot and drama to it, which makes me think it's a drama where a lot of the drama comes from sex and sexual relationships, not a thing where people gently caress because loving is hot.

No, I mean it's about 50% explicit sex scenes by page volume. If they want to play up other elements of the work, they're going to have to cut out a lot.

I don't have a problem with this, I'm just surprised. Maybe it's just ignorance on my part, but I've never seen a work like this get released as a TV show rather than an OVA.

We may be looking at a bold new era of titty anime.

Okouchi? That's a warning sign. His last three original TV screenplays were Guilty Crown, Valvrave, and Kabaneri, and Devilman seems like it'll be the sort of property that encourages all his worst instincts.

True, but it does mean that he will be going in with questionably-reliable backup. So there's a greater chance of this being less than peak Yuasa.

It's by the Black Lagoon guy, so there's decent odds on a bunch of rambly cod-philosophy, but it'll probably be massively outweighed by the ridiculous, balls-to-the-wall action (plus a bunch of delightfully terrifying ladies who Rei Hiroe would very much like to have step on him).

I guess not getting too self-serious. 'Pretentiousness' usually implies a degree of failed drama, where a lighter touch might have made the wobbly messaging go down a bit smoother.

UBW was definitely a weaker show than Fate/Zero.

Shirou's character is potentially deep and nuanced but the adaptation (if not the original game as well) portrays that really poorly. The adaptation should have been much less faithful.

(Like, when I played the game, I thought I actually knew what was going on in that climactic Archer/Shirou scene, but now I don't even know any more. Wasn't the original confrontation about whether or not self-sacrifice for an ideal makes sense?)

Also, they had real difficulty making all the blade-spam in the later fights interesting. I did find it unfortunate that one of the best action sequences in the show, Saber versus Berserker, was also one of the earliest.

The Fate/zero anime is a pretty good look into the franchise that doesn't involve Nasu's spectacularly turgid, repetitive prose, so that might be worth a shot.

There's a lot of cool poo poo in Fate, but a great deal of it is buried under endless :words:.

Genuine question here, what is supposed to be good about Berserk? Am I right in thinking it's basically The Witcher: the manga?

Stunning art, :black101: action, a genuine sense of mythic resonance to the events of the story (not all that easy to pull off), some remarkably complex character-work, and intelligent exploration of some really meaty, weighty themes.

It's really a shame about Miura's strange and uncomfortable fetishes, because they present a significant barrier to entry to a remarkable work of art.

Darth Walrus

Endorph posted:

I don't really know what you mean by 'fetishes' since there's some, like, sexual assault and stuff but it's never really presented in a fetish-y way in the manga, it's just dark and horrific.

I dunno, the writing around it generally reads as a serious attempt to deal with the issues at hand, particularly later on once Miura matures as a writer, but there is a hell of a lot of rape, and it is often visually presented in an uncomfortably eroticised manner. Plus there's the other not-rapey-but-still-kind-of-uncomfortable stuff - once you've read Gigantomakhia (which is otherwise a pretty rad story that almost certainly served as the visual inspiration for Attack on Titan) you can never look at Berserk's younger female characters the same way again.
