I didn't love it but I got a heck of a lot of enjoyment out of it. Good Ape Film, looking forwards to future sequels. Although I have to say that it felt odd watching a Kong film where he doesnt die at the end even though I was aware that this film was pretty much just setting up the Monsterverse so Kong surviving was pretty much the main reason the film even exists. But even Kong seemed to be a bit nonplussed about the fact that he was just left at the end, standing around growling at the retreating humans like some kind of 100ft tall moping wallflower. It also felt a bit weird that Kong was rewritten as a protector of humanity similar to some older versions of Godzilla although I guess that makes a lot of sense in this new Monsterverse context. I was also pleasantly surprised that John C Reilly's character wasn't 100% comedy relief like I'd been expecting from the trailers. Hiddleston was incredibly flat and his character could have been left out altogether without affecting the movie at all.

MrJacobs posted:Thats exactly what I'm saying. He is not the defender of humans that some people think. There's a whole scene where Marlow explains that Kong's family protected the natives from the other kaiju. He doesn't protect all humanity from all threats, he just looks after the humans on his turf as long as they don't "come into his house and pick a fight".

Kong also fought a giant octopus in the Toho King Kong vs. Godzilla.

K. Waste posted:The first time they encounter each other, Godzilla uses his atomic breath, and Kong is like, "Well, gently caress that poo poo," and walks the other way. Kong's body language during that first fight with Godzilla was great. The actor was completely encased in a giant rubber monkey suit with a static mask but still managed to perfectly mime the emotional reactions of "What the gently caress?", "No really, what the gently caress??" "Am I loving on fire?? God drat!" and "Welp, looks like I hosed up, time to beat feet."

The 1962 Toho movie even made sure that the audience were aware of the difference in their natures by pausing to announce it via a radio report just before their initial fight:

Lobok posted:Though I'm not sure why he did that. I thought he was going to use it like a spear but since he used it like a bat, keeping the extra branches would have been like swinging a spiked bat. After seeing that shot in the trailers I was guessing that he'd learned that sword technique by watching John C Reilly swinging his katana around. Nope.

SLJ actually managed to convincingly act like a guy who was going to gently caress up giant Kong's poo poo which was pretty impressive. He Ahab'ed the gently caress out of that monkey.Neo Rasa posted:THEN I LIFT

Yeah they filmed in Oahu, (Hawaii), northern Australia (Queensland) and Vietnam. http://www.atlasofwonders.com/2017/03/kong-skull-island-filming-locations.html Apparently the cast were terrified the entire time they were filming in the Australian outback because the safety officer told them that everything there could kill them.

Sustained shock, quiet withdrawal into oneself and a determination to do whatever one can to help others is a completely feasible reaction to discovering that something like Godzilla exists. Ford was forced to make a massive existential adjustment at the same time as he was reacting to a physical real world threat, it's totally understandable that he didn't act like a typical wisecracking action hero. On the other hand I didn't think that was an interesting or entertaining directorial choice for a focal character.

There's been a bunch of films where characters are thrown into a lost/alien world only to later discover a human survivor who has been living there for ages who becomes their guide - Laurence Fishburne in Predators, Eric the lost kid in Jurassic Park 3 and now JCR in Kong. I'm sure there's more, I just can't think of them off the top of my head right now. Soggy Cereal posted:I think a reduction of characters could have improved it immensely. The Sam Jackson character was great, and I ended up wanting him to succeed because he was the only one who showed any real agency. I think a full Moby Dick story could have carried the movie by itself and been amazing. Merging the two characters and making a movie about a man's 30 year war against a 100 foot tall ape using makeshift boobytraps made out of old WW2 fighter plane parts would have been amazing. Also I swear one of the trailers had a shot of Gunpei (the Japanese fighter pilot) that I didn't see in the film so maybe they did shoot extra scenes but they got left on the editing room floor? I went back and watched a bunch of the trailers but couldn't find the shot I remember, it might have been in a TV spot.

well why not posted:The scenes where Hiddleston is suddenly an action hero are so jarring because he basically does nothing for 80% of the movie. It felt like the scriptwriters forgot his character was in the movie, especially since he just steps in and takes a weapon from someone else. "Hey we established that this is your specialty weapon but watch me go!"

Perhaps they were establishing those characters so they could carry across to some of the other films? If not then yeah, apart from "Needs attractive leads with sexual tension" I don't know why they were written in. I guess maybe they could have established some sexual tension between Samuel L Jackson and John Goodman and I'm 100% those guys would have been up for that but I guess the audience isn't ready for that quite yet. Edit: the entire point of having a Sexy Female Lead in a King Kong movie has always been to complete the triangle between the Courageous Male Lead and Kong but I guess they felt they'd take this film in a different direction and have Kong battle Some Other Guy for dominance and territory.
