I like some of the things this scene reveals about Battler. Bern is using him as a piece, so she is limited to things he could do even if they are things he wouldn't do. That means that it was within Battler's power to solve the riddle from game one if he ever put his mind to the task. Instead he was busy perving on his cousins and getting distracted by ritual murders.

Battler, as a general rule, tends to demonstrate better reasoning skills the more emotionally detatched he is from a situation.

When he's just shooting the breeze as part of a thought experiment? It's not out of place for him to be matching Erika almost point for point.
When he's all fired up to deny witches because his sister threw herself on a fire? We get poo poo like small bombs.
