I always felt that while you didn't need to be a rich bastard to laugh at Frasier, if you ARE rich, and especially in Seattle, you probably know someone like Frasier and/or Niles. And possibly Maris.

I just watched the episode where Frasier and Niles plan a dinner party. That's it. It is hilarious.

Bust Rodd posted:I like the one where they ruin the dean’s christmas trying to get their son into the fancy school And the dean eventually lets him in realising it's the only way he's ever going to be rid of them. It's not much of a surprise Frasier and Lillith divorced and still get along, they enable each others' worst aspects.

Martin pretends to be gay on multiple occasions throughout the series, iirc. Everyone loves an old gay dude.

Kinda funny given iirc, that was a folksy steak place, which would now be trendy as all hell. Frasier and Niles were always somehow more old-fashioned than Martin in being snobby, before wealthy people started desperately trying to be relevant rather than exclusive.

Tumble posted:I already made that observation earlier in this thread dammit! That's probably what I was recalling, sorry. Similar point that it's almost a funny little period piece given how, ironically, Frasier and Niles could actually be ahead of the curve if they were a little more open-minded. I feel they coulda done more with Niles and Daphne if they'd explored Daphne's personality and attitudes a bit more beyond 'has a hosed up childhood and family' and 'is middle class British'. Even her brother Simon has more interesting personality traits there than she does; interesting that he uses big fancy words, perhaps to appear smarter or to mock Frasier, but he always uses them correctly. (might go with how Roz and other Americans think he sounds classy)

I think not actually casting super old dudes to play super old dudes for ongoing series tends to be a good idea, because they y'know, die.

Solice Kirsk posted:They had to bend both her and Niles' characters into knots to make them even remotely believable as a couple. Not to mention bending space time around them to make their former spouses the worst people ever so we wouldn't have to think what they did was terrible. Though iirc, they were building up both of them as being a lot more screwed up than they seemed from their introductions, weren't they?

It's outright said at some point that she's Maris all over again. (then again, Maris did seem like a more exaggerated female Niles as well)

You can kinda see how Frasier and Roz get along despite their differences; she's smart and perceptive, and picks up a lot of what Frasier talks about, and he (usually) recognises that. And I think he likes how she doesn't take any of Niles' poo poo.

Frasier's dating life was enviable even by 90s sitcom protagonist standards, not that it stops him complaining. Remember the ep where he dates a startup's token businesswoman and ends up hanging out with the trophy wives?

I remember the early chair-replacing episode was in like, the first season or third, at most? Would make sense that as he's gotten used to living with Frasier, Marty becomes less insecure about his situation and willing to give change a try when it happens on his own terms.

Bust Rodd posted:Can anyone with a brother way in on whether you'd ever be able to cope with your brother loving your ex-wife/mother of your child? I kind of feel like "No, it would probably be the last time we ever spoke, if either of us survived the fight" but then again we've never ever come close to something like this. I kinda hooked up with the girl he lost his virginity but we were all friends, and in college i tried to get this girl to sleep with me and my girlfriend and she ended up loving my brother a few days later, but both of those were basically immediately water under the bridge non-issues. Given their... entire life history between them, I think they're both quite well equipped to deal with awkwardness. It seems like it's hard to draw a recognisable caricature of Frasier.
