e: I wonder if either Martin or more appropriately Daphne ever made fun of their accent/vocabulary. Martin would be more likely to take the piss, but I imagine that any actual Brit would crack up hearing that accent IRL for the first time.

Does this one count? It's John Mahoney, doing a (more) American accent, imitating someone with an Essex accent who's doing a Manchester accent.

I need to get this show on Netflix or something - just watched the imposter episode again (Fool Me Once, Shame on You, Fool Me Twice...) - Channel 4 cut the final line of "Trust no one, especially THAT lazy bastard!" which refers back to what Nathan Lane's character had just been saying, but they still left the line in the subtitles. And while googling that, I discover there's a whole Daphne anecdote they cut out (the punchline is fellatio) - always thought there was a strange jump in the laughter in that scene.

i like the one where roz wins a skip trip and but she can't go so she gives the tickets to frasier and they go and everyone is hitting on everyone and the ski instructor tihnks niles is gay and in the end everyone gets hit on except frasier

Probably my favourite episode, just a shame they couldn't get someone who could do a better British accent.

My vote for worst loving episode of the whole series. Frasier had been getting really shouty and weird that whole season, but in this one he acted so hysterically stupid I wondered if they were building up to the big plot twist that he'd developed a brain tumor or a meth habit.

yeah frasier was being such a dick in that episode. pay-off at the end is great though, shame about the rest of the episode.

This is great, this is great.

made freakier by the fact I accidentally had two copies of the video playing at once, a few seconds apart.

ahhh, one of my favourite episodes was on today, 'the show must go off'. derek jacobi really hams it up so wonderfully.

"Ah, you must be the Crane pater! It is a pleasure to encounter the headwaters whence bridge these twin rivers upon which I have launched my humble craft."

"In the words of our great author, "stiffen the sinews! Summon up the blood! Disguise fair nature with hard-favored [nearly falsetto] rage! They lend the eye a terrible aspect!"

oh and I see it won him the emmy for guest actor. and fun fact i hadn't realised - his father is played by patrick macnee, of 'the avengers' fame, which was referenced in 'Radio Wars' as being Frasier's favourite show as a child, wearing his bowler hat and carrying an umbrella.

anyone else unsure of the canon of daphne's psychic ability? in the early seasons we see she actually is psychic (like she can see Eddie next to an bench advert of Frasier) but then in the episode I just watched, it's shown she just used her 'ability' as a child as a defense mechanism against having so many brothers and being the only girl.

She enjoyed the opera stuff (which is where the boys got it from) but wasn't snobbish - from Dinner at Eight:

Martin: "You know, I used to think you two took after your mother, liking the ballet and all that, but your mother liked a good ball game too. She even had a hot dog once in a while. She may have had fancy tastes, but she had too much class to ever make me or anybody else feel second-rate."

Yeah the parking garage episode had a great payoff, but it took ages to get there.

Also the spelling bee episode was great:

Niles posted:

I was a little younger than you. I'd been winning numerous competitions, but I was obsessed with one thing and one thing only: the National Championship. The time finally came and there I was, standing on that stage, waiting for the judge to say the final word, and suddenly it happened. It all clicked. All the rules, "i before e", assimilations, etymologies, they all became one. And then, became nothing. In that moment, I realized there was no word I couldn't spell. Competitions didn't matter anymore because I was one with the higher truth that is spelling. So when the judge said that last word, I just walked away.

Freddie posted:

Didn't you care what people said?

Niles posted:

Oh, people said a lot of things that weren't true. "He didn't know the word." "He was scared." "Mafia this..." No, it didn't bother me. Because they couldn't take away what I knew in my heart. You know how to spell, and it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks.

also

Niles posted:

People, stop please! Look at yourselves. This is wrong. What are words, after all, but a way to communicate, to bring us together? But you, you're using them as weapons! Now, we still have an opportunity to walk away from here as winners, and wouldn't that be the greatest Spell-abration of all?

Frasier posted:

He's right, Son, let's go home.
[They turn and head for the door with Niles.]

John posted:

Yeah, we're all winners. Except for the two cheaters!
[The Crane boys stop, then collect themselves and continue.]

Warren posted:

Hey, you know how to spell "loser"? C-R-A-N-E.
[Again, the Cranes halt a moment, then keep going.]

John posted:

You don't have to worry about ever seeing him again, Son. Chances are he'll end up in a state school.
[Freddie, Frasier and Niles whirl around, rage on their faces.]

Niles posted:

Freddie posted:

I imported the Blu-Ray set to the UK (region free) and it was worth it as the picture quality is such an improvement on the Channel 4 SD quality broadcasts. Plus the lack of censorship - so many cut lines I've never heard (eg the first time I've ever heard Daphne say 'fellatio') and the weed episode just never gets aired in the 0830-0930 in the morning time slot. I'm sure they've played the "Frasier Crane's humongous rear end" jingle though.
