gobbagool posted:You know, i can almost see the sneer on your stupid face when you type things like this. What economic system actually works on it's merits, or for that matter, what system of human interaction works on merits versus "a nepotistic ring of interlocking elite network, access to specialized.... blah blah blah loving blah"? Certainly not any kind of communist government, or whatever fringe retarded marxist philosophy splinter group you angrily cling to. That would be projection. Capitalism barely pretends to be a meritocracy in practice. Attend any job search program and they hammer in the point that most positions aren't advertised and require networking to access. That's the polite way of saying that success is based in nepotism.

It sounds like they've proven that a) poverty affects the brain and one's ability to escape the stresses it creates and b) a personalized coaching team can give you the support you need to escape.

Not a Step posted:This is why early childhood intervention is so incredibly important, and also why poverty tends to be a generational issue. Aside from the permanent brain changes and maladaptive decision making caused by growing up with extreme stress poor kids tend to have enormous word gaps and delayed development. That hampers those kids from succeeding later in life. Rinse repeat when they have kids. It doesn't count as woke if you don't get to play great white saviour

Condiv posted:things seem to be changing cause more and more people are hurting though. like bernie sanders was not a super popular politician till last year, and people are casting off their traditional leaders for outsiders. imo, that change is cause of the pain, but if you have another explanation i'm open to hearing it It's less that the pain is being felt more acutely and more that it is being felt by those who are already empowered. People who are already in poverty generally don't have that much time and energy for politics, and associating an increase in their economic pain with political action is a good sign you might be a privileged rear end in a top hat.

Talmonis posted:Same. It's necessary to accurately identify liberalism as an ideology distinct from socialism, communism, etc. What you are objecting to is simply a return to the classical use of the term to indicate utopian capitalism. This is good, because using it as a synonym for "progressive" has stifled diversity within the Left while enabling the efforts of the Right to tar all progressives with the same brush.

Talmonis posted:Surely the American Socialist (or Green, or Whomever) party will make mass gains in the coming elections, as The People suddenly realize that they don't need any funding whatsoever to campaign with and sweep elections solely by being right about the problems of the world. The People will definitely reward them for their correctness with votes and loyalty. Or maybe people will simply be able to identify and organize around actual variations in ideals and preferences within the Democratic Party instead of watching the party wither and die as fewer and fewer actual people are represented by its leadership and an larger portion of its remaining votes are motivated by horror at the Republicans rather than any desire to see its candidates in power. And, of course, the quote displays the usual Hillary tactic of insulting and attacking a broad swathe of people first, thus tainting everything that comes after it. eh around here we're guilty of all this too it's difficult not to lust for death in this era of unmattering
