What are you gonna do, dance with me?

I just started playing this a week ago (and ended up loving it enough to Day One Blazing Deserts) and yeah, I've been able to work out ways to reliably deal with most everything I've met except Necrosavants. Their jumping ability plus their distressing tendency to survive your last attack of the turn just barely and get another bite off just completely fucks with me. I don't think I've ever actually lost a fight involving them yet but they always make it costly.

Oh are the skulls on the origins actually correct or are they a relic of patches gone, like Total Warhammer's difficulty ratings as an example? I got creamed with the default start but later on I said gently caress it and started as Lone Wolf just to check it out and lol having a Hedge Knight with that equipment at that stage of the game makes everything utterly trivial. The 12 bro limit is a little rough but not at all insurmountable.

This was on the same seed too, so it wasn't map changes that made things easier.

Yeah I made a Schrat shield this run and it's pretty great.

I didn't start playing until like right before Deserts dropped but yeah I've always chumped alps. Just bring dogs and polearms.

I could see them being an issue if you're super outnumbered I guess but I only ever see them pop up in groups of like six at most with a bunch of direwolves maybe.

You wanna talk about annoying monsters, my bane is Unholds.

The Lord Bude posted:

Unholds aren’t too bad if you know how to deal with them. The trick is to have tanks with indomitable to pin them in place. Indom stops then from throwing you around and keeps injuries to a minimum. (Having high health helps as well in that regard). After that it’s just a matter of being able to do enough damage fast enough. I’ve taken out very large groups before around 12 to 15 of them I think there was in the biggest group I’ve faced.

I always meet them on day 5 or therabouts :v:

The Lord Bude posted:

Oh. Well they're fat and can't run fast? Stay away from them on the map. If you stick to the roads it's unlikely you'll wander into particularly dangerous groups of beasts that early.

"Hmm, yes, unlikely," I say, as the caravan I'm escorting for a few hundred gold drives directly into an unhold attack

I know they're rare but I called them my bane for a reason, I have terrible luck with the fuckers

EDIT: Also the first seed I ever loaded in this game resulted in a day 1 Schrat attack because the forest they spawned in was right next door to the starting town. It was only 1 Schrat but lol

It is, hardly any mods were actually broken by the deserts update just based on my incredibly cursory look around when I was hunting for a tryout mod

Apparently tri-flails are actually solid in this patch? I haven't done the math myself, not familiar enough with the game really (I still think two handed swords are good but apparently that isn't true according to half this thread :v:) but I've seen quite a few people playing them up since Deserts dropped.

Got a hankering for lovely dirt peasant merc sim again and am thinking about firing this up. How are the oathtaker and anatomist origins? I haven't played all the OGs, just rebuilding and Lone Wolf (which was by far the more fun of the two for me), and those two looked the most interesting to me so far.
