this game has got me good. I started the tutorial and somehow several hours instantly disappeared. I got over zealous and tried to fight a Lich and got stomped

I had one of my boys tell me about some gems in the caravan we were guarding. I thought we would just skim off the top not murder the whole caravan

I've had 2 quests that felt like they didn't spawn tracks. I'm on day 2 of a 2 skull serpent contract and I can't find them. Any tips on what I could be doing wrong on this one?

Also is there a decent way to raise reputation with someone after you get to threatening with a faction? I basically can't visit several places atm

For some quests (Hunt Quests if I remember correctly) they wont spawn tracks, they'll just tell you to go to an area on the world map and wander around like an idiot and hope the baddies are there. Don't do those, they suck and are not worth it cash wise. If it's a regular bounty quest sometimes you will need to range further than what the cardinal directions says, so start from the initial hint and keep going further and further.

For the last question, it's mostly time in order for them to cool off. Ending a Noble War or Holy War will reset the faction to cold though. If you have a monk then sometimes there is an event where you give money to the monk and they use their influence to bribe the faction leaders for a reputation reset.

I figured this might be the case, but I needed the money. I'm trying to play mostly blind, at first, because there is a wealth of information and I'll waste too much time reading over playing

jokes on me, that campaign spiraled and ended because of that stupid serpent quest. I burned all my cash looking for them on food supplies. Then ran into a highly equiped merc squad that I'm fairly sure was aggro because of the noble house I was closest to was the one that hated me. overall 10/10

I did get some sick polemaces and started beating peoples heads in from afar and most of my dudes are in 95+ armor. I'm at 38 w/ 11 dudes doing trade runs, exploring the map more and looking for archers. I'm not sure on the balance between squad size and amount of days in tho. Should I already be at 16?

Ironically the caravan assist probably made it worse. Necrosavants heal when they do HP damage, and giving them poorly-armoured caravan guards and defenceless bags of HP donkeys to snack on means a bunch of full health confident necros wrecking your poo poo even worse than usual.

I've taken the approach of letting caravan guards being the bait for new enemies. so that I can get a preview of how their mechanics work. I immediately ran when I saw what they could do. I believe I made the right choice

I fought some goblin wolfriders with a caravan. I'm pretty sure they would have shredded me solo. they are a good lesson on protecting your flanks and using terrain for area denial. a spearbro just chillin with some trees can hold off a few things while you deal with the other half of their squad

the one ok-ish archer I found:

I honestly don't know what I'm doing with perks:

but I'm terrified of losing people so everyone gets colossus, iron brow and recover. then 2 handers get backstab, front liners get the reposition skill & shieldwall, and after that I'm not sure besides weapon specialist and i think battleforged for the front line? there's so many choice and it feels like you could create some niche builds depending on stat loadout. I've heard people mention hybrids. I assume that uses quick hands to switch between javelins and a main weapon?

I did get a bunch of notched blades, from killing gobbos, that double as knifes. which led to me stabbing brigand raiders for their poo poo when I went to drop off those furs back down south. oh and I am comfortably sitting on 8k. which I need to head back north and start searching for top tier weapons. oh and it looks like the orcs are gearing up for an invasion and I feel wholly unprepared for a greentide

Harald deserved a title for being able to theseus the militia back together. I've been getting trade goods, picking fights nearby until I get injured, then head to wherever the trade good would sell well for. I only take delivery quests at this point and avoid the north eastern part of the map where there be orcs. thanks for all the advice thread, it's helped me from getting overly frustrated with the game and just enjoy the lols

as for contracts. I've still been able to find 1 skull in between trade runs. if I find a town that has ambushed convoys I stick around and help the local militia take them on. avg lvl is now 4 and I have slightly better weapons than before. I didn't realize that with fewer dudes the exp split is less so they are leveling much faster than the first group. I didn't take iron brow this time and took gifted instead which helps me shore up these newbies

in an rp sense Harald has been lying to the new crew and told them he's been around since the original founding and knows all the secret trade routes. in reality he was the stupid newbie carrying everyone else's stuff but conversely he really did get a good view of how to manage the company

so I say all of that to end this campaign due to a barbarian reaver ambush, 12v6 in the woods, because I got distracted. I think I had a shot at turning this around but tbf each time a campaign has ended has been to a bad contract call then a death spiral. my biggest mistake was those low resolve heroes. during the barbarian champion fight they broke hard, when a bro died. I straight forgot about the rally ability on the banner letting my bros take a bunch of unnecessary damage when they fled. I think if I had only lost 3 instead of 5 bros I could have finished the unhold fight in a better position. still losing bros mind you but more survivors

alright time for a southern mercenaries start. I feel like I have to at least get through a crisis before moving up to 2 skull start position

hilariously lindworms I met in a group fight with city militia and yeah they are super scary. that peasant militia campaign ended with me trying new enemy fights and seeing how mechanics work like alps

as for ironman I have a bad habit of save scuming games. ironman keeps me moving forward and not retrying infinitely. I do appreciate the advice and I may have been overstating my frustrations. I play table top games so dice fuckery isn't new to me

overall the game has been great and while there is a steep learning curve it doesn't feel insurmountable. the gotcha parts are fighting new enemy types. which tbf makes sense and this game provides an actual variety of enemy types which makes new encounters fun and challenging. my new bros are a lot better equipped and I have an actual plan for leveling them. it feels like I'm progressing a lot quicker than last time

I think I wasted too much time visiting the norther part of the map and trying to run trade goods down south. whereas it looks like I get most of that money by having a centrally located city be under caravan attacks. I finally remembered to look at the retinue screen. I decided to go with scout, paymaster, blacksmith. I don't think a surgeon would have saved Yazid from becoming a zomboi

I thought my highest killcount would be my hammer bro, 104 battles 87 kills, but turns out the billhook guy has out paced him 104 battles and 124 kills. I am still playing ironman and apparently only 5.4% of players have beat the first crisis this way

after the discussion on archer/throwers I did the same to mine and they are beastly. double handing a spear as a backup weapon made them pretty ok in combat. I can definitely see how different skill combos change how a bro works. now when I'm looking at bros stats and stars I can see what they'd be good at with a glance. whereas before I was picking relatively safe perks. e.g. I didn't use adrenaline until my 3rd round of replacement bros

Congrats on beating the crisis! Doubly so if you're still on Ironman. You can stay in the campaign and chase that brass ring to retire as a truly legendary company. Another crisis will always kick in eventually, and you can use your time in between to build the company, hunt down uniques and sniff out legendary locations.

You could also start a new company. I play on Expert combat but do normal economic difficulty as I find the economic difficulty doesn't really change combat all that much, just makes managing the company a bigger PITA. Maybe you could try one of the more unique starts (raiders, manhunters, lone wolf or gladiators)? You can use the same map seed if you want to benefit from uncovering the map last campaign or try a new map altogether?

I think I like the randomness of new map seed each time. I know that can lead to wild maps that are valid yet unfun. I like the idea of Deserters or Northers Raiders, since I lost to a noble's merc hit squad. I should figure out how to play against it and those rando supply caravans look mighty tempting. I imagine like Battletech you can essentially designate a faction to be a loot pinata

I got greedy and went for paymaster before I really had the money to do so. Was down to 200g and treading water between fights. I got super lucky and found a low level camp of cutthroats. this rolled into taking a 1 skull witch contract for 1k. I knew it was make or break time and went all in. I managed to tie up the webknechts while my lone polemace dude ran up and brained her

Holy War is the dilemma of the day. I see 2k and 3k contracts and have no idea when I should be able to take them. I guess stepping back, do most people heavily participate in the first crisis or just profit while trying to solidify the core team?

I'm on day 47 of a Band of Poachers campaign. in retrospect my biggest issue was not fighting enough. I've started having multiple backup pairs of armor and bros for injury replacement.
