i still dont see how leaving saddam hussein in power was ever considered a "liberal position". removing a guy who literally has people executed and publicly tortured for owning cell phones is "interventionist" in the bad way?? really?

i mean i know iraq war 2 was lovely for lots of other reasons, but i think the whole removing an insanely brutal dictator thing was a good call all around. and liberals who sneered at that should have their liberal card revoked because they dont actually give a poo poo about liberal principles or any of the people who were living in that hellhole. That isis took over after we bailed doesn't really say anything about the goodness or badness of removing saddam, it's kind of on obama for pulling out too soon imo.

Couple reasons. First of all there's nothing special about Saddam. Repressive governments exist the world over. Saudi arabia. Egypt. Angola. And the war lead to much more suffering than would have happened otherwise. That makes it a bad thing. It's not complicated

unironically now, you can make a case for U.S. military having a role in the world, but that also has to be coupled with an understanding of its limits.

war isn't just like "put X amount of dollars into the military/war effort = get desired result" as there's asymmetry involved.

there's another problem in that the U.S. military is so big, its very presence distorts and mutates the economic and political conditions of countries it occupies in unpredictable ways. an army, like a country, is just another way of organizing people. the army doesn't just fight when it occupies, it hands out contracts, builds air bases, roads, concrete walls, depots, whore houses, etc. etc. etc. so the plan is to do X but your attempt to implement X is actually causing the environment to bend toward Y. doing more of X is not going to work.

that's "friction," which clausewitz wrote about.

i dunno what this has to do with north korea but i think if there was a war, it would actually veer off in a weird, unexpected direction.

And one of the guys visited North Korea as a representative, but the DPRK pretty quickly severed ties because he was, as you can clearly see, a goddamned crazy person.

They also tried to merge Juche ideology with Jim Jones Thought (of the People's Temple). Also guns and death threats directed at some other fellow travelers got involved before the group fractured.

It's a type of conspiracy theory. Just as the 9/11 truthers think that you're a sheeple if you believe that some Saudis hijacked planes and knocked down the WTC, these types think that anything bad about Stalin, Mao etc. is just imperialist propaganda only believed by sheeple. Though admiring Hoxha is just weird, even for that lot.

I had a job once where they brought in an outsourced HR, and interviewed everyone. I was interviewed by a nice young lady, and after it was done, I asked her "I was wondering about your accent - you sound as though you're from Eastern Europe, but I'm not sure beyond that." She explained she was from Albania, and I realized that she was about my age, so she had grown up during Hoxha's time in power. I had seen a report about Albania on Sixty Minutes many years before, and I said "Wow, that means that you grew up in one of the most repressive countries behind the Iron Curtain. Wasn't the dictator named Enver Hoxha?" Her mouth dropped open "You even said his name right!" She was happy to talk about growing up in Albania, and what it was like (not as bad as you might think, enough food, but not great food, clothes, but not very nice, some things you just didn't talk about), and how happy she was to leave and come to the west.

I guess that they figured he couldn't get into too much trouble in the hotel hallways. . . but idiots find a way. Also, like was already mentioned. North Korea likes to keep a few hostages in their back pocket so that they can use them for leverage when they need something.

Personally, I think that guy was only one step above someone who would have bought a ticket to Auschwitz (while it was running) to point, laugh, and take smug pictures. The term "war tourists" is a thing for people who go to check out war zones, but is there a term for people who go to horrible places to act smug? Irony tourists?
