I'm just stunned that boy paid his way to North Korea and then stole a sign from a pound-me-in-the-rear end totalitarian regime instead of ponying up a few extra bucks for some souvenirs. I mean they've probably got souvenir shops and I can't imagine they're that expensive what the gently caress

I found that gif from the website of the Rural People's Party, a group of ex-white supremacists who moved into a backwoods South Carolina trailer to create a pro-DPRK commune. The pic of the girl a few posts up -- she was mixed up with them. http://ruralpeople.atspace.org/ And one of the guys visited North Korea as a representative, but the DPRK pretty quickly severed ties because he was, as you can clearly see, a goddamned crazy person.  They also tried to merge Juche ideology with Jim Jones Thought (of the People's Temple). Also guns and death threats directed at some other fellow travelers got involved before the group fractured. unironically now, you can make a case for U.S. military having a role in the world, but that also has to be coupled with an understanding of its limits. war isn't just like "put X amount of dollars into the military/war effort = get desired result" as there's asymmetry involved. there's another problem in that the U.S. military is so big, its very presence distorts and mutates the economic and political conditions of countries it occupies in unpredictable ways. an army, like a country, is just another way of organizing people. the army doesn't just fight when it occupies, it hands out contracts, builds air bases, roads, concrete walls, depots, whore houses, etc. etc. etc. so the plan is to do X but your attempt to implement X is actually causing the environment to bend toward Y. doing more of X is not going to work. that's "friction," which clausewitz wrote about. i dunno what this has to do with north korea but i think if there was a war, it would actually veer off in a weird, unexpected direction.
