Democrazy posted:There are leftists who think that Hohxa is cool. They call themselves Hoxhaists. It's a type of conspiracy theory. Just as the 9/11 truthers think that you're a sheeple if you believe that some Saudis hijacked planes and knocked down the WTC, these types think that anything bad about Stalin, Mao etc. is just imperialist propaganda only believed by sheeple. Though admiring Hoxha is just weird, even for that lot.

Wikkheiser posted:I like them because I like the way Hohxa is pronounced. Like "Ho-jah." I had a job once where they brought in an outsourced HR, and interviewed everyone. I was interviewed by a nice young lady, and after it was done, I asked her "I was wondering about your accent - you sound as though you're from Eastern Europe, but I'm not sure beyond that." She explained she was from Albania, and I realized that she was about my age, so she had grown up during Hoxha's time in power. I had seen a report about Albania on Sixty Minutes many years before, and I said "Wow, that means that you grew up in one of the most repressive countries behind the Iron Curtain. Wasn't the dictator named Enver Hoxha?" Her mouth dropped open "You even said his name right!" She was happy to talk about growing up in Albania, and what it was like (not as bad as you might think, enough food, but not great food, clothes, but not very nice, some things you just didn't talk about), and how happy she was to leave and come to the west. Try whatever form of social organization you want - nothing will work. Maybe someday we can genetically modify our species, and live like a global colony of carpenter ants.

Benny Harvey posted:How was Hoxha worse than Stalin? I don't know that anyone is saying that he was worse than Stalin. But he remained a Stalinist until his death in 1985, so when the USSR and the rest of the satellite states were liberalizing, Albania remained a little pocket of severe repression. A bit similar to the difference between modern day China and NK.

Psycho Society posted:You couldn't be more wrong. A patchwork system of resource-starved counties or states trying to implement a safety net for basic needs is a terrible loving idea. Jesus christ I agree. Take the issue of homelessness - if one city in a state institutes a very generous set of policies (relative to the other cities in the same state), offering low income housing, drug rehab, jobs programs, word will get out and they will be overwhelmed as people travel there to take advantage. The same is true of states that have generous welfare benefits versus ones that have, err, more "objectivist" standards. The policies are better instituted on a state or federal level to level the playing field and ensure consistency.
