This kind of "lol just learn Econ 101!" argument falls flat when the results of the last 20 years have been what they are. there's no guarantee that the new jobs will be as good as the old ones.

there's no guarantee that all lost jobs will be replaced by the new whatsoever either, that's just historically what has happened but that doesn't make it scientific fact and any real economist wouldn't be so quick to make any guarantees like that about anything.

thinking this form of capitalism is the end all be all answer to everything and it just requires some tweaks here and there sometimes to keep it going is ideology

The amount of math you have to take to get an econ degree is hilariously small, especially given how complex many of the problems involving money are compared to items in the physical world that engineers or physicists deal with. Taking something an economist says about the economy to heart is usually like putting stock in your tarot reading aunt's opinions on nutrition. Economics is an arena for soft brained people to sit in hoping some salesman active in the economy comes by and picks them to be their fall guy or jester while they go about robbing people using some variation on the rounding off scheme from Superman 3.

I mean I wouldn't necessarily go that far but this is closer to the truth than most people realize and tbh the amount of math that is in economics that is just equations straight lifted from hard sciences because "well if it works there it must work the same here" is hysterical really.

Econ is a new as gently caress field of study relative to many others and there's a whole lot we don't know. Hell until relatively recently economists figured humans were more or less rational actors which is ofc totally wrong.

Econ requires a lot of math don't get me wrong and it's deffo hard depending on what you're talking about - but a lot of the stuff that we've taken as a given is turning out to be false and based on entirely shakey premises that were assumed and never rigorously examined.

For example there's an equation wrt quantity theory of money where 'MV = PT'

Then Freidman picked that up and went "AHA" nm that it was an extreme simplification of something pretty drat complex and then came up with MV=PQ

but uh that first dude just based it on the physics gas equation PV = RT. There were no long years of experimentation and poring over data sheets to come up with MV=PT

A looot of the economists back like in 1700/1800 thought they could improve their discipline by replacing crude approximations and hypothesis with equations just straight taken from hard sciences. That doesn't mean that everything is bunk at all, it just means economics is a relatively new field and we're discovering that some things we took for a given are just not so. Again for example the idea of people as rational actors was popular even up until just a couple decades ago. Still is today really among some circles.

The survey, conducted by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC), which partnered with YouGov, found that 45 percent of the youth said they would vote for a socialist and 21 percent said they would vote for a communist. Additionally, 53 percent of millennials said that America's capitalist system "works against me."

Millennials also tended to agree more with statements from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) than economist Milton Friedman, 71 percent to 58 percent, respectively. Only 55 percent felt that communism is a problem, compared to 80 percent of baby boomers.

quote:

Operation Condor (Spanish: Operación Cóndor, also known as Plan Cóndor, Portuguese: Operação Condor) was a campaign of political repression and state terror involving intelligence operations and assassination of opponents, which started in 1968 and was officially implemented in 1975 by the right-wing dictatorships of the Southern Cone of South America. The program was nominally intended to eradicate communist or Soviet influence and ideas, and to suppress active or potential opposition movements against the participating governments' neoliberal economic policies, which sought to reverse the economic reforms of the previous era.[5]

Due to its clandestine nature, the precise number of deaths directly attributable to Operation Condor is highly disputed. Some estimates are that at least 60,000 deaths can be attributed to Condor,[8][9] and possibly more.[10] Victims included dissidents and leftists, union and peasant leaders, priests and nuns, students and teachers, intellectuals and suspected guerillas.[10]

Condor's key members were the governments in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. The United States government provided technical support and supplied military aid to the participants during the Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations.[2] Such support was frequently routed through the Central Intelligence Agency. Ecuador and Peru later joined the operation in more peripheral roles.[11] These efforts, such as Operation Charly, supported the local juntas in their anti-communist repression.[12]

see its okay when the rich systematically exploit people because when they do it, they do it with the approval of other rich people, and oftentimes they follow the arbitrary rules that they have created for society while doing so!

that is what is most important, after all, following the rules. eventually if you follow the rules you will be rewarded! not following the rules leads to punishment. religion teaches us that these rewards and punishments will come after we are dead, so no use getting worked up about any supposed "injustices" we see being committed. it'll all get sorted out, just mind your own business and follow the rules in the meantime.
