A new year and I desperately try and shuttle in men to stem the Entente advances.

Prussia has been secured!

Lets put pressure on Warsaw!

We are ahead on tech in everything but tanks, and I push us further with infantry.

We try advancing again in Egypt.

A marauding Russian force pushes one of our units back, but at heavy loss.

We continue to work the defenders of Port Said over.

The French take out a fort on the Swiss border.

Conrad holds off a Russian attack.

We push back the Italians.

Now there are Italians in Egypt.

The push to the north of Warsaw is stopped after some brutal fighting.

We seem to be doing okay here.

We do advance to a province to the north of Warsaw.

In the West, we counter attack to stop the Entente advance – losses are heavy, but we win.

The Entente counter-counter attacks the next day and reopens the supply lines.

Haig shatters our front line and continues to advance.

Lets hope this draws off a lot of troops.

Somehow we have cut them off- lets see if we can hold the line.

Time to rest – once the snows clear, I shall launch an almighty assault!

Turkish forces begin to arrive in Armenia.

Nearly a million Russians lead by their Tsar attack Hindenburg. At least this is keeping them away from Warsaw.

We suffer another humiliation in Belgrade.

We are pushed back across the Rhine in yet another area.

The Russians attempt a river crossing to break out of the pocket near Warsaw – we murder them, a hundred thousand men lost in a single battle.

So we lost 413,000 men in the first month of this year. The Russians lost 231,000 and the Western Entente 235,000 This has been a bloody month!
I'm not sure how many more months like that we can take....

On the western front I try and reinforce the pocket while retreating across the Rhine in the south.

With Prussia looking secure, I shift Von Eniem's army south to support the attack on Warsaw.

My forces there rest and await better weather.

We send out largest sub on supply run to the USA – while it doesn't do much materially, it is a great PR stunt.

We turn back another Russian probe on the edge of the pocket.

The French breach the pocket with heavy losses.

Kitchener pushes in the south.

We also see defeat at Koblenz.

We must hold in the west!

The northern Prussian border is well protected.

The thaw will bring a wave of bloodshed in Poland – this is our best chance to break the Russians and free up these troops.

The men in Algeria begin to move into attack positions.

A Serbian division charges forwards and... surrenders?

The British take very heavy losses in Egypt.

The French lead the advance again – I'm training as many German troops as I can, but the numbers never seem to be enough!

The Russians continue to advance here.

The French force then hits Frankfurt, and we make them pay for the ground they take.

We stamp down on another Russian attempt to break the pocket.

In you stay!

Russian morale is below the magic 75!

The revolt risk is rising – France is the only ones with no real rebellion at home.

The weather in the East has cleared – for enough time for me to launch an assault at least.

I do my best to stop the onrushing French and British hordes.

I then order armageddon in Poland.

I also try and draw off any Russian reserves.

We obliterate a Russian division north of Warsaw.

A second falls a few days later.

The Bulgarians win a bloody victory against the Serbians.

A clash in Frankfurt is costly, We need more artillery! We need more of everything!

A third Russian division is destroyed in the Warsaw area.

We lose at Lodz - the Russians simply have more men they can feed into the grinder.

It’s the same story when Conrad attacks.

The next day’s fighting doesn’t make any ground, but costs the Russians a lot more men.

The Austrians pay the price for advancing through snowy mountains.

Hold out boys!

We have a toehold in Lodz, and will continue to pressure it. The Russians can’t have THAT many men, right?

The Bulgarians will start a campaign against the Greeks.

We hammer the Russians to the north.

The Russians push us back at Lodz.

A failed British attack in Egypt costs them a huge number of men and can’t look good in the papers.

Conrad inflicts heavy losses on the Russians before being forced back. Can we bleed them to death?

The bloody Romanians have entered the war. And not on our side.

Our losses pass five million men. The Russian revolt level is at 50%. Who will break first?

How does the game determine who wins a battle anyways?

The "winner" is the side who does not retreat - so even if they lose 30-40,000 more men, they still "won".

And yeah, the British army got pasted in Egypt.

I wonder what these numbers have to do with the numbers in the report. Actual engaged dudes vs. their entire stacks?

Those are the men engaged at a certain time, so the number goes up and down as units retreat or come in as reinforcements - I mainly used them to show where the battle is taking place. They also drop like a stone whenever the word "Assault" is shown as men die in their thousands.

Its like with the Romans, where they had lots of names and repeated them a lot, so we tend to pick one and run with it.

Or just use the nickname given when they were a kid.

I continue to struggle to hold the French advance.

In a continuing effort to keep the Russians pinned down in Poland, I launch an attack to the north.

The push to the south slows as we need to rest up our troops again.

In Poland itself, my men are ordered to rest – apart from Eimen who will attack.

The Greeks are putting up some resistance.

In Egypt, orders have been given to destroy the British.

Bulow starts the offensive with a nice victory.

This is not the slaughter I was hoping for as the British retire before action.

The French once again throw their huge army forwards. I have to protect in all directions, while they can concentrate on one attack.

The Turks advance against the Russians.

The French are cut off again – hopefully this will buy us time as they send troops to reopen their supply line.

I'm moving my forces so I don't attack Lodz across as river this time.

The Russians have pushed south at an alarming rate, I need to raise troops to stop them!

The weather clears down on the Italian border, so I order a limited attack.

Bulow reports defeat. “Sir, there were just to many Russians to kill. We ran out of ammo and daylight.”

You will stay in your pocket.

Things heat up in the backwaters.

I was shocked at how quickly their numbers dropped here.

An artillery unit uses a entire column of supplies before going down.

Wait, I didn't order an attack on Lodz – but we won! I'm so confused.

A Bulgarian force loses heavily.

The Russians counter attack at Lodz and push us back.

Kitchener throws his men into a brutal assault.

Bulow massacres a Russian assault on his position, destroying one of the attacking Divisions.

I'm not sure anyone wants to be fighting this war anymore.

We continue to try and hold the French advance.

The Troops tire so quickly.

We keep up a broad offensive here. I have the new Phosphogene gas to use in support of the attack. The first time I've been allowed to use gas on the Russian front.

But the Russians are streaming south and I have nothing to stop them.

The Romanians are also going to be a problem.

The British call on their allies to defend Egypt.

I order more attacks in Italy.

Cadorna kicks us off with a successful assault.

There are Russians in Serbia now.

The Greeks stop the Bulgarians in a bloody battle.

The Turks advance against the Russians.

Bulow's advance is checked.

Conrad advances the only way he knows – at two to one losses.

The French come south to reopen their supply lines.

The Russian advance south continues.

Thankfully, it does not all go their way.

We win again in Egypt, but it is costly.

The Turks also destroy a Russian division.

We overwhelm another force.

The Russians are losing a lot of Divisions!

Time to shift troops north in an ever lengthening line – They have the troops to defend it, we don't!

Another wave backed by gas will hit Lodz. I'm using both types of gas here to maximise the effect – its win or lose!

This might be a problem.

We push into Georgia.

We continue to try and push on Cairo.

We overwhelm the Russians again.

The Turks smash a garrison force.

They then destroy the remains of a Division.

Their push south has spread their forces to the point that I have local superiority.

We advance against the Italians in Egypt.

Bulow pulls back to secure his supply lines.

The Russians must have gone a long way around to get here, but they are more than a match for my local forces.

What the hell! I set you to be on the defensive! How could you throw away so many lives?

Thankfully things swing back our way in Russia.

The Turks destroy another division.

Our morale has crashed, but the Russians are under 75 again!

Ow, this is getting messy. Think you can turn it around Grey or nearing the edge?

I think we may be near breaking point now.

I put on easy supply after the AI in 30YW attritioned itself into oblivion - I didn't realise it would make supplies completely irrelevant. This threw off my early plans where I should have hit Warsaw with everything I had.

I'm getting things into order now, but I'm not sure how to stop the two massive breakouts.

This may well be the first LP I lose!

Technically you were losing you're Steam and Iron IIRC. You just called it early because of the games absurd win conditions for the Germans and the refusal of the British fleet to even give you a chance.

Not that I would count that of course.

Yeah, that's another case of the game being against the player.

Apparently I don't do well as WWI Germany....

I do what I can to plug the gap.

We are in Lodz and threatening Warsaw, but we need to rest the men before the next assault.

The Austrians are mass recruiting to stop this offensive.

I'm mostly trying to lure the Italians into futile assaults.

Samsinov's Russians are causing havoc in Serbia.

A large Russian force in Georgia may well cause me problems.

We continue to push in Egypt.

The French magic up 200,000 men and 1,000 guns to overwhem one of our positions in the south.

The Russians continue to advance south.

I pay the cost to take some forts north of Warsaw.

Okay, something is going on here, all of the troops in this area were on defensive – and I checked. So why are they now attacking – we win, but that's not the point.

We hold off an Italian attack.

The Entente Army smashes through our forces in Frankfurt.

Once again an army on defensive stance attacks – and this time the losses are horrendous – I need to replace this butcher!

Thankfully, we get our revenge.

We cannot stop French advancing in Düsseldorf.

I have no idea how they penetrated our lines this deeply.

News of the Austrian Emperor's death could not come at a worse time, our national morale plummets.

I order all troops to evacuate the Rhineland, we need to shorten the lines!

We hold to rebuild cohesion.

The Italian front is stablizing.

Serbia is a disaster waiting to happen – if they keep up the pressure, we could see mass surrender here.

Thank god for the Turks.

The French continue to advance.

We hold back the Russians south of Lodz. I think the change in posture is coming from units marching to the guns – if so, its very annoying.

The French march further north.

Despite everyone being on static, defensive orders. We somehow win a defensive battle in Warsaw.....

I have no idea what is going on any more.

The Italian main army advances once more.

Entente forces begin to strike out in all directions.

Austrian troops continue to fall back.

There is not much to say. Things are very confusing and our National Morale is in the toilet.

Yeah, I would say gg, but the more I see of this game the less I like it, Still they cant all be winners.

I'm thinking about calling it, not only because I've lost, but because the turns take an hour to do, in a solid block. My Son is now waking at 4-5am and Its getting hard to find that block of time. (Hence the sporadic updates)

I'll continue if people want me to play it out though! I'm not a quitter.

Wait, I thought the choice was between this and another WWI game, not between this and some Greyspawn. Spend the hour teaching your kid about the Great War, Grey. You're British, that's like all you're expected to do as a father.

And by "teach" I mean keep doing LPs with that hour.

Yeah, its just that I have trouble fitting an hour long, no pause turn into my schedule, I have time to LP, but not in the long blocks this game is demanding. Processing the turn is a long job, and its longer when you have to take images.

Its not like I'm ignoring the spawn, its just when he wakes my free time is over.

My build was basically just trying to get troops and artillery out wherever I was most under threat. I never had chance to do much planning.
