I read the book. Main thing I remember is the guy just wouldn't listen to locals anywhere. In Alaska, they told him he was coming at the wrong time of the year to do it. Don't show up just as the thaw is happening.

He saw the bus and sat down. Waiting for the driver to show up and take him to a bus stop that had food. I blame the bus.
