I think they wrote him out so they could kill the show by getting Rachael pregnant. Last couple of seasons were SOO bad. Joey and Rachael, Courtney Cox being pregnant while her character couldn't conceive. Just such bad writing. I CARE ABOUT A 20 YEAR OLD TV SHOW!
