The low-variance nature of basketball as a game also has an impact. Even when you do get a "bad blood" type of rivalry like Pistons/Pacers, Lakers/Kings, or Knicks/Heat, the results are usually pretty one-sided, which diminishes a lot of the fun of a rivalry.
