Forget brotherhood. Forget family. You can buy your happiness. You can have this, this and that. If you don't you're a bad person. A failure. You need to have this. You must have this to be part of something. Don't you want to be part of something?
Well to get that something you need to work. You need to work to be good. You want to be good don't you?
But remember unions are bad, workers shouldn't be uppity, and those people need to know their place. But remember to buy the thing so you are good.
I'm pretty sure "worrying about measuring up to society's expectations" isn't specific to capitalism - it sounds like something that would date back to caveman days when being shunned by one's peers would often result in starving to death.
And it's not as if other economic systems wouldn't lead to a completely different set of social standards for people to lose sleep over.
