Doesn't seem to be the case in AZ. When I was shopping for a Focus ST I was concerned about how the seat would work for me (I'm wider than I should be, and the seat is narrow) over my long hour+ commute each day. I was at one of the largest and most reputable Ford dealers in the area and the sales manager got a copy of my ID, gave me the keys to a brand new FoST and at about 1pm on a Saturday said "get it back here before we close at 7pm".

The other Ford dealership I have purchased cars from her has never sent a salesman on a test drive with me and I've bought 3 cars from there now.

Well, followed a drunk driver while chatting with 911 tonight, but sadly other traffic got in the way and I lost them when they entered a subdivision. I'm hoping that the cop that had almost caught up with me and entered the subdivision 60 seconds after me had an address from the plate number and went to their house and got them getting out of the car. If not, oh well, I tried, and it was totally worth the 10 or 15 minutes out of my life the detour cost me.

I'd post the dash cam, but it would be really boring. Boring enough that I'm not even planning to pull the chip and save the footage. Once they got off of the interstate they drove fairly normal, if a bit fast, but on the interstate they were doing a lovely slow motion S-curve from about 2' outside the lane to the left, back to 2' outside the lane to the right, and varying speed somewhat randomly +/- 10mph of the speed limit.

God drat STR you are your own worst enemy. Have you ever considered using a check register? At some point you may have to come to the realization that maybe it's not the bank(s).

The other way (which I realize is simply not possible for someone in STR's position) is to simply not drain your checking account to near zero monthly. I make sure that after all my bills are paid for the month, I'll have at least a thousand left in the account so that I never get near the overdraft issue.

The trick is to manage to get to that point when your finances are already on a paycheck to paycheck basis, and then not spend the money that you know is there.

I understand what happened STR, and it sucks and seems like your paperwork would back you up and the bank should cover all your expenses. I was just saying how I avoid that personally by keeping enough buffer that even my biggest bill (mortgage) would be covered if I somehow forgot about it.

Given the terrible rates on savings accounts right now, I don't see much benefit of keeping my money there vs. in the checking account which also gets a miniscule amount of interest.

Like the others above, I also pay every bill possible (including my day to day living) on a cash-back credit card and pay it off monthly. Yet another thing that our society tends to deny to people who live paycheck to paycheck since they typically can't qualify for one.

Muscle is denser than fat, so be ready for your weight loss to stall, or possibly even reverse if you start lifting seriously. Start measuring your progress by your pants/belt size in this case, as you could easily gain weight while actually losing fat and inches.

When I started lifting I was on the very last notch on my belt and weighed about 230. After 6 months I was 235'ish, but I was 4 notches in on the belt, so I was perfectly fine with that, although absolutely need to shed about 40 pounds long-term.

I would get two weeks vacation this year, three starting next year. Here I'd have to wait four more years to get that third week.

Man... This is a hard decision...

Which place is better for your future long term? It sounds to me like this is a great time to move, given the known pattern of layoffs and poor management at your current place.

The commute is an issue for sure, but if the starting pay is already a nice raise, and the vacation and medical is better, it sounds like a better place to work in general.

Ultimately you should do what is going to be best for you, as there is no such thing as company loyalty to employees anymore.

Jebus, those insurance premiums and deductibles. Everyone in my company bitches about the current health plan, because the premiums keep going up, and so do the deductibles max OOP, but after seeing the stuff in the last page or two, I think I'm pretty happy with it.

$70/month premium, $800 deductible and approx $2000 max OOP (I forget the exact number, but it's near there). Standard doctor co-pay is $25 and specialist are $40. That's where the biggest percentage increases have happened, just 4 years ago it was $10/$20 for PCP/Specialist.

Yea, if it's not bothering you or demonstrably the cause of some other issue, tell them to gently caress off. 3 of my four wisdom teeth never erupted from the gum-line and quite literally point forward into the molars ahead of them. Every dentist I've ever had prior to my current one was all 'those should come out'!, but since they never bothered me I declined.

After my 51st B-day the one wisdom tooth that was actually in the 'correct' orientation managed to develop a cavity where the dentist couldn't properly fill it, so I got it yanked out. I still have the other three and they still cause me no issues, and I'm not in a real hurry to have the oral surgery required to have them removed just because the dentists don't like how they look on my x-rays.

But trust me, up until this point i have been telling dentists to gently caress off because they weren't a problem. But when they are they just gotta come out.

If I have one of the three unerupted ones needing to be taken out I'll probably go for all three, since it's full on oral surgery at that time, but for the one I had taken out, there was enough of it there that by taking care of it quickly before it rotted, the dentist was able to do it as a simple in-office extraction with local.

Not looking forward to the day I start having issues with any of the three left, as the recovery will probably suck, even if I am completely out for the actual surgery/extractions.

Job chat - eagerly awaiting a call back from the place I interviewed with in February and again about a month ago, their own deadline for deciding was end of last week. Fired off an email early Friday afternoon politely asking WTF, they responded Monday with "by the end of this week." Given that they haven't held to any of the previous timetables I'm not sure if I believe them but I still have my fingers crossed.

Throwing a wrench into the works - I got a call from a recruiter today whom I spoke with about a month ago, he's looking to quickly fill another computer janitor position. While it isn't my preference (trying to get away from computer janitor jobs) and the drive isn't ideal (about 50 miles round trip, 99% highway) it does pay slightly more than I was making at the call center, and they want to interview me on Thursday with an expectation to fill the position "by early next week." It is a (W2) contract gig through the end of the year with possibility for extension or being hired on directly with the company - a home/auto/farm insurer. Can't really in good conscience turn down a position that would pay the bills.

I'm really holding out for the first place because in addition to more money (its a system engineer position, so easily $10k more to start since they'd have to train me to get me up to speed) they also offer better benefits - high deductible insurance plan but they pay for all but 5% of premiums - and the commute is roughly half the distance to the place I got called for today. Hopefully either way I'll be back to work by this time next week :ohdear:

Since the job you don't want, but would pay the bills is a contract gig, can't you just walk away from it if the other place makes a good offer?

Kind of relevant. As discussed, I had an offer from a competitor recently. Today I got copies of all the documents I signed when I started back in 2012, which includes a non-compete.

What does the non-compete actually say? At your level I would think it was something that prevented you from working for a competitor at the same time as you worked for the company you signed the agreement with.

I can't imagine that a lower-level employee would be held to something stupid like a 1-year from termination sort of agreement.

Even if it is a valid non-compete, I think (note that I'm not a lawyer) that in order to actually go after you for taking a job with a new company, they would have to somehow prove that your employment at the new company was somehow harming them based on you sharing proprietary company information at your new job.

Computer janitor work isn't something that is going to harm the old company so I would think enforcing a non-compete to keep you from getting employment would be fairly sticky for them legally.

I might be completely confusing what you actually do though.

In this area I've always heard it called "Comp time". The Phoenix Police department used to have unlimited comp time, but the officers work so many OT hours on the regular (or used to, not sure about now) that they eventually had to cap the comp time and force the officers to take OT pay after a certain point because there was so much built up comp time that scheduling was becoming a real problem, which of course led to even more comp time as everyone covering for the people taking time off was working OT.

I'm salaried, so I get jack for working OT. I actually prefer salary though, as long as the management is cool, because I don't have to worry about how many hours I work as long as I get my job done. Taking time out for doctor's appointments, visiting the DMV, doing a charity event, etc. do not impact my pay, and as long as I let them know in advance everyone is fine with it. There have been a few fairly short periods where things sort of went to hell and I put in stupid hours for a bit, but overall I think it balances out. Several co-workers and I go out for lunches pretty regular and usually don't get back to the office for 90 minutes or even 2 hours on Friday's, and nobody cares because we aren't punching a clock.
