All of Australia’s big four banks appear to have ruled out funding Adani’s Queensland coal project, after Westpac said it would not back opening up new coalmining regions.

Westpac, the country’s second-largest bank, released a new climate policy on Friday, saying it would limit lending for new thermal coal projects to “only existing coal producing basins”.

Good news.

What civil disobedience regarding Adani? I thought all of the stuff protesting that mine was pretty much by the book stuff, and that lawsuit from the endangered lizard etc.

I think Adani is more about the near death status of coal. It's one thing to continue to use existing infrastructure (mines, trains, power plants.) It's another thing entirely to sink a billion dollars into a white elephant like that.

I'm not sure in this case. There's probably a financial and social reason (proportionally which it is I couldn't say) since the banks are becoming more mindful of appearing less evil. Do you really want to bankroll a mine that's going to get your branches picketed for a year?

Well given that it seems like merely the current operational fossil fuel production will use the entirety of our carbon budget for 2 degrees C it may be wise for banks not to make massive multi year investments in thing that will inevitably have to not produce the full amount they are capable of.

https://newrepublic.com/article/136987/recalculating-climate-math

Of course there is only ever one singular reason for a thing happening so we'd better have a big argument about which reason was the one exact one that made banks do this.

I'm worried that the Federal and State governments will try to make taxpayers fund it instead.

And Albanese is just now pointing out the political slant in Federal infrastructure funding on abc24.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull described the public interest advocate as a "very important protection" for journalists.

"There is nothing in the bill therefore that should concern journalists about their right to do their job, their duty to do their job and to deal confidentially with their sources," he said the House of Representatives.

"All of us understand that the work that journalists do is just as important in our democracy as the work that we do as legislators."

Labor has forced the government to provide extra protections for journalists. The opposition believes the public interest advocate will address fears the warrant process for accessing a journalist's metadata will simply be a "tick and flick process".

The Coalition believes they aren't necessary but is agreeing to the demands because it wants its third phase of counter-terror laws passed through Parliament by the end of next week.

The bank of the proletariat. So the taxpayers will foot the bill on this losing venture that already has said it will send the profits to tax havens and has shareholders pissed at them already for doing so as they won't see money either.
