Both the Platinum Games thread and the Devil May Cry threads have been archived due to inactivity, and that broke my drat heart considering that today, SEGA just released the latest iteration of the Bayonetta franchise on :siren:STEAM:siren::

8-BIT BAYONETTA (http://store.steampowered.com/app/567090/)

BAYONETTA 1 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/460790/)

https://twitter.com/SEGA_Europe/status/851814640468324353

Against all odds, Bayonetta 1 is finally available on Steam for the low, low price of $20USD or its equivalent in your local currency. It was a stunning return to form for Hideki Kamiya in 2009, who arguably created the character-action genre in the first place with Devil May Cry, as well as creating Clover Studios' Okami and Viewtiful Joe before leaving to start up Platinum Games.

Bayonetta basically plays like an extremely-polished character action game with an emphasis on dial-a-combo inputs a la Tekken for your offense and dodges that can trigger slo-mo and/or parries that can reflect enemy shots and attacks for your defense. All the usual genre standards like launching enemies into the air for combos, weapon sets and quick switching, "style points" and combat rankings that give you a metric for how well you're doing, tougher difficulty than most games, badass boss fights that range from massive monsters to duels with enemies with movesets very similar to yours were refined to an amazing extent by Platinum with Bayonetta 1, making it one of the best action games of all time during its release.

Check out this video from Gamespot for gameplay footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6bOOEo-glA

The port comes with 4K support, Steam cards to sell to rubes, and all sorts of fancy bells and whistles with PC tech that I don't understand! Buy a copy today!

Nioh is rad and I'm ready for a new Ninja Gaiden but it seems like an even less likely prospect than before, at least in the short term.

Speaking of, when are they going to bring those games to PC and current-gen consoles?

Nioh and Bloodborne are going to be the white whales of Sony PC ports.

Yeah, I jumped the gun there, not seeing anything new. Now I'm thinking about staying up just to catch the announcement.

Metal Gear Rising is one of the best games ever made in its genre.

The gameplay isn't as technical as Bayo but it makes up in style. Like everything onscreen is hella cool 99% of the time and Samuel is the definitive samurai badass in fiction.

Also Furi is really weird but features some really cool boss fights.

There is a beautiful simplicity in Sam's playstyle that I would love to see in an actual reboot of DMC if Capcom tried it again.

I'd definitely play a spinoff or successor to Sam's portion. It was just very satisfying.

Speak of satisfying, I'm really bummed that there's no analog triggers on Switch - this means if there was a DMC4 port, Nero's motorcycle sword revving would be quite different. Real pros just slam it full force at perfect timing, so I'm not too fussed.

Beat 'em ups are the 2d sort, CAG (dumb name I agree) evolved for the 3D games.

Beat-em ups have an ensemble cast and are usually MP, character action games are SP and usually centered around one badass.

God Hand is owned by Capcom. A remaster or whatever isn't entirely out of the realm of the possible (especially since Kamiya still apparently maintains amicable relations with Capcom, at least to the extent of dragging the current Resident Evil producer out drinking regularly) but it would take a lot of work to drag that PS2 codebase - if it still exists - into the modern world. Hell, it took a lot of work to drag Bayo onto non-Xbox platforms!

They did do a PS2 classic of God Hand for the PS3 so at least it's easier to play now without finding a working PS2 and a game disk :unsmith:

Heck even a Clover franchise like Viewtiful Joe that got a decent push at the time (but also didn't sell) hasn't gotten a remaster treatment. Only Okami.

Just so you know, Kamiya worked on Viewtiful Joe and Okami in addition to DMC but he didn't work on God Hand - that was Shinji Mikami's game, the guy behind Resident Evil and Vanquish.

In Bayonetta is the dodge/parry button different from the attack button?
How does the combat contrast with Viewtiful Joe, Wonderful 101, and Revengence? I understand very well how the dodge/parry mechanics work in these games and it's frustrating at first but rewarding when it clicks. I don't love these games but I kind of like them.

Dodge is a different button; it's generally mapped to the trigger and is fully separate from attacking.

I haven't played Bayonetta for a while but IIRC the parry is very similar to how it works in Revengeance.

I never played Viewtiful Joe, much to my chagrin, but it's similar to W101 and MGR. Bayonetta wants you to dodge more than MGR did, and they encourage that through the use of Witch Time, where enemies move slower if you dodge properly. Dodging is definitely easier to get a handle on than parrying, but it's still very rewarding.

The real beauty of the combat system in Bayonetta is the training room load screen; whenever the game is loading, it drops you into a training room with a dynamic list of combos on the side; as you press buttons, the list changes to show you what combos you can go into from the buttons that you've pressed already. It also shows you how many times you've done that combo, so you can look for routes that you don't often use and test them out to see what happens. This makes the combos very accessible; you don't have to try and discover them, you can just look for stuff you haven't tried before.
