Both the Platinum Games thread and the Devil May Cry threads have been archived due to inactivity, and that broke my drat heart considering that today, SEGA just released the latest iteration of the Bayonetta franchise on :siren:STEAM:siren::

8-BIT BAYONETTA (http://store.steampowered.com/app/567090/)

BAYONETTA 1 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/460790/)

https://twitter.com/SEGA_Europe/status/851814640468324353

Against all odds, Bayonetta 1 is finally available on Steam for the low, low price of $20USD or its equivalent in your local currency. It was a stunning return to form for Hideki Kamiya in 2009, who arguably created the character-action genre in the first place with Devil May Cry, as well as creating Clover Studios' Okami and Viewtiful Joe before leaving to start up Platinum Games.

Bayonetta basically plays like an extremely-polished character action game with an emphasis on dial-a-combo inputs a la Tekken for your offense and dodges that can trigger slo-mo and/or parries that can reflect enemy shots and attacks for your defense. All the usual genre standards like launching enemies into the air for combos, weapon sets and quick switching, "style points" and combat rankings that give you a metric for how well you're doing, tougher difficulty than most games, badass boss fights that range from massive monsters to duels with enemies with movesets very similar to yours were refined to an amazing extent by Platinum with Bayonetta 1, making it one of the best action games of all time during its release.

Check out this video from Gamespot for gameplay footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6bOOEo-glA

The port comes with 4K support, Steam cards to sell to rubes, and all sorts of fancy bells and whistles with PC tech that I don't understand! Buy a copy today!

Nioh is rad and I'm ready for a new Ninja Gaiden but it seems like an even less likely prospect than before, at least in the short term.

Speaking of, when are they going to bring those games to PC and current-gen consoles?

Nioh and Bloodborne are going to be the white whales of Sony PC ports.

final hour

Really? gently caress, then. Whatever, I can wait another 8 hours. Or however long it takes.

Yeah, I jumped the gun there, not seeing anything new. Now I'm thinking about staying up just to catch the announcement.

Metal Gear Rising is one of the best games ever made in its genre.

The gameplay isn't as technical as Bayo but it makes up in style. Like everything onscreen is hella cool 99% of the time and Samuel is the definitive samurai badass in fiction.

There is a beautiful simplicity in Sam's playstyle that I would love to see in an actual reboot of DMC if Capcom tried it again.

A couple sites let slip early: Bayo PC port, out today.

Awesome. I'll drum up a post once the official word is out.

EDIT: Sega Europe is gonna announce it in 15 minutes.

Is Bayonetta the Dark Souls of the CAG genre?

Nah I'm gonna say that's DMC3

Just so you know, Kamiya worked on Viewtiful Joe and Okami in addition to DMC but he didn't work on God Hand - that was Shinji Mikami's game, the guy behind Resident Evil and Vanquish.

Like a combo, the OP is an ever-changing beast! Thanks!

I'll look into adding cool gifs showing off the game's features once I finish downloading the thing and getting to grips with it.

Don't get me wrong, I ultimately prefer stylish action game, but I guess that sounds way too esoteric for most people (who are lame)

The shotguns in Bayonetta are way better than I thought, especially coming from years ago in the PS3 version. Good choice for wrecking single big monsters since they attack just as fast as Scarborough Fair, just have to remember to hold the attack buttons down like with the lightning/fire claws for the real damage and stun.

You should be holding the button down at all times for almost every weapon imo. Charge modifiers deal way more damage than you would think, even with the default guns.

Yeah, it's why I stopped using Shuraba; as reliable and strong as it is (and TBH nothing still has the speed and utility of the sweeping Wicked Weave you get from the PKP combo and Tetsuzanko), its charge modifier can't be used mid-combo.

From what it sounds like, the only western licensed property Platinum handled that was worth a drat was Transformers.

toasterwarrior

I was wrong: you totally can use Shuraba's charge modifier in combos, and it makes for decent AOE spam without insta-killing poo poo like maxed-out fire Durga skulls.

Sharing from the Steam thread, but apparently Bayonetta PC got a little patch with this guy's picture in its game folder:

So Vanquish is a-comin'. Considering that a lot of character action fans also happen to like Vanquish a lot thanks to Platinum also making the thing an extremely stylish shooter, I suppose it's welcome news here as well!

Though by that logic so would Bulletstorm and Doom 2016 Arcade Mode because of the combo systems...whatever, get on that poo poo if you're a big Platinum fan.
