The concept of make-up calls already exists in hockey, so what they should do is have a few people reviewing everything as the game progresses and if they see something, hand out retroactive penalties/goals! The fancystat crowd is already studying every frame with a magnifying glass so they just gotta tap into that system.

If the nhl spent more than fifteen bucks on their blue line cameras, it would be pretty easy to determine offsides. But nah, a 0.5 megapixel sensor recording at 3 fps is all we got budget for. Sorry guys!

Mind_Taker posted:Just get rid of offside reviews. Who cares if that one time a dude was like 10 feet offside and they missed it? It doesn't outweigh the bullshit of offside reviews slowing down the game and creating instances where a goal scored 30 seconds after the puck enters the zone is called back. Because we're still listening to people cry about hull's skate. As soon as it effects the results of a championship the entire sports world is gonna blow up. You gotta at least try to clean that stuff up.

ThinkTank posted:To do his job correctly, the linesman has to stand on the blueline and would be in front of the camera most of the time. The NHL has them already, but they're generally not a very useful view for that reason. There's only one linesman and he can only stand along one side of the rink. So you get ~6 bullet cams, drill three holes in the boards on both sides of the rink, and mount three on each side. Gives pretty good chances that at least one of them will be unobstructed at the correct point in time. Hire me, NHL.

There's lots of chatter of a "core player" being shipped out of Chicago soon. The list of dudes still around from 2010 isn't very long but if one of them goes it will be a Big Deal(tm).

Chicago has to be super careful with Hossa because if they do anything that motivates him to retire they are fuuuuuuucked on salary cap.

They should assemble the "retired" rings into a MegaCup at the HHoF, instead of putting each one on its own shelf. Then bring in the cup winning team of that year and have them take a group shot holding the MegaCup over their head.

Suddenly he can't put on hockey equipment and the hawks get some incredibly badly needed cap relief. Hossa's (short) statement hinted this has been going on for a couple years and has been getting worse. He probably saw some more specialists after they got booted from the playoffs, Blackhawks management saw the report and went "heyyyyyy wait a minute we can use this!" and encouraged him to take a year off to help Hossa/the salary cap. I can't imagine shoveling immunosuppressants down your throat is a good thing for a travelling athlete to do.

Counterpoint: after 2010 everyone was trying to copy the Blackhawks "bad goalie, world class defense" formula. Then the Kings and Bruins won some cups and hosed everyone over, making all the GM's think that a BIG PHYSICAL GAME is how you win. Can we hand off the cup between Chicago and Pittsburgh for the next 6 years so we can get 10+ years of GM's building teams that are actually fun to watch?
