I remember reading a defense of the trade from some schmo on the internet, because according to this schmo, the Bruins wouldn't have won the Cup with Thornton. This trade freed them from his contract, and they were able to sign Chara the next offseason.
It's repeated a lot, and not just by internet folks.

They saved like 1.5 million per year, which even in 2006 terms was pretty meaningless. They had a fair chunk of cap space regardless and you imagine it would more likely result in them not signing Savard as opposed to Chara. And of course they could've just traded him for a real return and gotten the same effect.

Every team does worse with a lead than while trailing, it's certainly not an easy thing to change. And it goes beyond who you're giving shifts to, the exact same set of players perform worse with the lead.

I think people especially Vancouver fans miss the point of why people are complaining about AV. Just because your team went and hired some lovely coaches doesn't mean AV is without fault. I'd rather he magically learn to fix his mistakes but I feel comfortable saying some of his decisions probably cost the Rangers that series. It's an issue. It needs to be addressed one way or another.
Sure but if you get rid of Vigneault than you have to hire someone else when the complaints posted about Vigneault are said about every coach in the league.

So I don't get how Vegas is supposed to be anything but a heap of poo poo next year. I don't know all the ins and outs of the expansion draft rules, but it seems like all they're going to get is a lovely 3rd/4th liners from every team, maybe a decent goalie, and maybe someone good from their high draft pick. Maybe an aging veteran that a team doesn't want to protect because of their cap hit or whatever.

Is there any other outcome for this team next year than being bottom of their division?
They're an expansion team, this is expected.

florida has made the playoffs five times in twenty four seasons, in a league where over half the teams make the playoffs. only once did they make it past the quarterfinals. they've won six playoff games since their cup run over twenty years ago. columbus has won three playoff games in seventeen seasons. and of course atlanta was hot garbage. looking past expansion to non-traditional markets in general, the yotes have only made the playoffs seven times in twenty seasons, making it past the quarterfinals once.

i mean we obviously got a lot of cool and good franchises through expansion, but loving vegas? there is plenty of reason to assume vegas will be another columbus, atlanta, florida, or yotes
The Coyotes weren't an expansion team, they got a fairly functional Jets team and made the playoffs 5 times in their first 6 years upon moving to Phoenix.

I think the parity talk is a little overrated. Like someone said this isn't different from most periods in NHL history, and if you look at the cup runners-up, you see a pretty big list of teams that could have won a cup if the Finals (not entirely a crapshoot, but a 7-game series can still swing by chance) had turned out differently- Nashville, San Jose, Philly, Rangers, Vancouver.

e) it's also funny that the "NHL has no parity" evidence is like, "only four teams won over an 8 year period!!!" like, what do you want, two different teams in the Finals every year?
I like seeing different teams win, and it's been a while since that happened.

Honesty, Holmgren got shunned by every GM in the league because he legitimately offersheeted Nashville of all places. You don't think GMGM gonna get the deep dick if he fucks over multiple teams who gave out limited NMC's like candy years ago to their vets and fringe core players because they were an easy value add to a contract that didn't affect their bottom line?

Dude is going to roll with concession deals or get rolled. He wouldn't be able to find a front office job in North American hockey because everyone knows everyone. Hockey is still hockey even when you are wearing suits and these people would think you are taking liberties with their carefully planned out team.
Was he shunned? Holmgren was gone within 2 years and made a pretty normal amount of trades in that time. It certainly didn't happen to Doug Wilson for the Hjalmarsson offer.

The last few moves - this and the Girardi buyout - have been broken by the teams themselves. I think the league is making a concerted effort to do this rather than having the media start squeaking it out bit-by-bit.
