Twin Cinema posted:I remember reading a defense of the trade from some schmo on the internet, because according to this schmo, the Bruins wouldn't have won the Cup with Thornton. This trade freed them from his contract, and they were able to sign Chara the next offseason. They saved like 1.5 million per year, which even in 2006 terms was pretty meaningless. They had a fair chunk of cap space regardless and you imagine it would more likely result in them not signing Savard as opposed to Chara. And of course they could've just traded him for a real return and gotten the same effect.

Every team does worse with a lead than while trailing, it's certainly not an easy thing to change. And it goes beyond who you're giving shifts to, the exact same set of players perform worse with the lead.Levitate posted:I think people especially Vancouver fans miss the point of why people are complaining about AV. Just because your team went and hired some lovely coaches doesn't mean AV is without fault. I'd rather he magically learn to fix his mistakes but I feel comfortable saying some of his decisions probably cost the Rangers that series. It's an issue. It needs to be addressed one way or another.

I fully realize that it's just treated the same way as coach of the year or the leadership award, except even dumber because youre trying to isolate the current year of GMing, but how do they even pretend to justify nominating Dorion?

I don't know all the ins and outs of the expansion draft rules, but it seems like all they're going to get is a lovely 3rd/4th liners from every team, maybe a decent goalie, and maybe someone good from their high draft pick. Maybe an aging veteran that a team doesn't want to protect because of their cap hit or whatever.

Like someone said this isn't different from most periods in NHL history, and if you look at the cup runners-up, you see a pretty big list of teams that could have won a cup if the Finals (not entirely a crapshoot, but a 7-game series can still swing by chance) had turned out differently- Nashville, San Jose, Philly, Rangers, Vancouver.
