I just don't see why you don't just go with Travis Green. If there's one thing the Canucks front office likes, it's PR. Hiring the AHL coach would show you're actually committed to a youth movement.

Regardless of what he inherited coming into Tampa, resolving the Drouin situation and signing Stamkos and Hedman for what he did is pure wizardry on Yzerman's part.

He had mono this season which hurt his draft stock a lot, but that's not like Patrick's groin injury where it might be a long-term concern.

I mean, none of this matters because if the Canucks fall to 3rd or beyond they're taking Big Boy from Surrey Michael Rasmussen but it's nice to talk about.

If Green has any growing pains, the carnival of calamity will continue unabated and the team could really use some positive PR at the moment. Utica's roster was real bad this year and Green did a pretty good job with keeping them in the playoff hunt until the last day of the season. I think it's the smartest way to go, but AHL coaches have flamed out spectacularly in the past (Eakins, Desjardins)

I get that the Canucks defence ranges from terrible to okay, and then Tanev, but what purpose does it serve to see Subban obliterated and Pedan embarrassed on a regular basis. You miss 100% of the bad plays you never call up unready developing players from the minors for? In the case of Subban, at least for me, Philip Larsen was signed almost exclusively to act as a 1PP unit shot. He was a disaster both defensively and in the PP role and I see no reason why Subban, who's established himself to have a pretty dang good shot in the AHL, couldn't play that role. He certainly couldn't be worse defensively.

Heliogabalos posted:how realistic is the possibility of trading Tanev? It seems like a really stupid idea from any perspective but it keeps coming up in discussion. It's very realistic and not dumb, either. By the time the Canucks are going to be competitive again, Tanev will be past his prime so it's best to trade him at his peak for good young talent/high pick(s). Chris Tanev is basically what the Edmonton Oilers *thought* Adam Larsson was and the Devils got Taylor Hall for him. Of course, the Canucks return for Tanev won't be anywhere near as good because life is pain but it's the right thing to do.

The Canucks need to rebuild and the first step of a rebuild is to trade your prime aged assets for younger assets that'll be in their prime when you're ready to compete again. The Canucks defense is going to be a disaster with or without him, and you might as well give the Ben Huttons and Troy Stechers more ice time. 2017 was bad but 2018 should be worse. It's best to just embrace the tank and get a top 4 player from what should be a deep draft.

Yeah like, obviously he's old but I'm sure a Stanley Cup contender would take him any day of the week while they still have a window open. Alternatively, McPhee might be interested in him and go full Vegas золотые рыцари. They won't be cup contenders but bringing in exciting talent for fans to watch in the first few years seems like a good way to make sure interest stays.

General consensus from what I've seen is that Eberle's getting shipped out of Edmonton at some point this offseason. Good hockey Twitter man Dimitri Filipovic gives us a chart that shows this is a bad idea. https://twitter.com/DimFilipovic/status/860252053964193792 Oilers better hope they win a cup soon before Chiarelli trades Draisaitl over not fitting in with the culture.

He's not great but he's 23, an RFA right now and they can sign him for cheap. The Canucks picked him up on waivers and I kinda grew to like the guy. Taking somebody like Gudbranson, Sutter, or Sbisa actively hurts the team, so I think they just go with the safe young guy option.

This offseason the Habs have to resign Drouin, Radulov, and Galchenyuk (and Markov but he's not getting as much as he did) Next season Plekanec and Emelin go off the books but you also have to give Carey Price a blank check. The season after that, Pacioretty's 4.5m cap hit expires and he's for sure getting a huge pay increase. I think that's why people are saying Galchenyuk is gone. You just don't have the cap room for all that.

I get that he'll likely be of little use if and when this team is ever competitive again, but he won't evaporate if he's not moved before July 1st. His NTC is 8 teams I believe, and he'll still be a hot commodity at the deadline this year and next year. There's no reason to rush into a deal unless it makes perfect sense to the team.
