I enjoyed the first ten episodes but in the end I just didn't have the time to keep up with everything I was watching and the episodic nature meant it didn't really grip me, so I guess I'll save the rest for another time.

Start with the Early Days OVAs. From there, you can do one of two things: either watch the films (the first one is great, the second is a bad Patlabor film IMO but incredibly pretty, I wouldn't bother with the third one), or watch the TV anime (officially a separate continuity from everything else, but it's not like it matters because the characters are pretty much identical to their Early Days versions at the start). depending on what you have time for. The live action stuff is a) mostly still not subbed and b) a sequel to the film continuity set 15 years later where most of the cast have retired from the police force.
