The original Captain Planet cartoon had some dark poo poo in it. I vividly remember a scene with a black family watching tv in their living room getting gunned down by a drive-by shooter.

As a kid it didn't make much sense to me, but now I realize that being a red-head he was probably Irish-Catholic, and yeah, they are not down with that.
