The Patriots seem to do them fairly often.

Last year they traded a 4th for Martellus Bennett + a 6th.

In 2014 they traded a 5th for Jonathan Casillas + a 6th and a 6th for Akeem Ayers + a 7th

He'll also be 31 next year. He wore down as the year went on and I wouldn't be that surprised if the Patriots do something else then sign him either, which is kinda shocking about a guy with 18 td's last year. But literally no one else has brought him in for a visit (because he's a 31 year old headcase), so they know he's over a barrel.

(fast) Willie Parker was eating those snaps by that point though. Bettis had like 100 carries his last year.

You did remind me of when Cowher was running the two headed Mike Tomczak and Kordell Stewart offense though, which was 100% dependant on Bettis.

Does that really follow? the Falcons of 2017 have some questions, but should be as good as the 2016 Seahawks, and one of the Buccaneers/Saints/Panthers should be as good as the Cardinals were last year... but who's going to be Rams or 49ers Bad? Even if the Saints totally poo poo the bed again defensively, I can't see them being Rams bad, let alone the tire fire that was the 49ers.

It's not some mystery--the Eagles had a hot start that included a blowout win over PIttsburgh, while the Patriots were missing Tom Brady for 4 games. Once the season got to the point that those games were weighted less and the Eagles had started dropping games, things shook out more like you'd expect. DVOA weighs later games more heavily, it's not a manual correction that happens.

Yeah, the Eagles started this year killing the Browns and Bears (before any formula would call them awful), then massacred the Steelers, and until game 10, didn't lose a game by more then a score, while beating the Falcons handily and taking the Cowboys to OT.

That's exactly the kind of team you'd consider to be way better then their 5-4 record, but then their lack of receivers and other depth problems killed them and that was that.

In comparison, the Patriots opened up with close wins over the Cardinals and Dolphins, before clocking the Texans and then getting housed by a bad Bills team. It's no surprise it'd take a lot more data for a formula to think this team was better then the above.

They were a pretty good team, and the end result of a 4 year rebuilding process.

in '93, Parcells takes over, flushes the roster, drafts Bledsoe #1 and the team is awful, but then wins out in December (to go 5-11... yeah) and show they were on the right track.

'94 the team is still very thin, they start 4-6, and have 0 running game, but Parcells gives up and lets Bledsoe throw every down, and they go 10-6 before losing to the Belichick Browns in the playoffs.

'95 the wheels fall off, I ... kinda forgot what happened since I spent a chunk of the season in Hong Kong, and only could get news about what happened from USA Today blurbs, but the team regressed hard and was a mess.

'96 Curtis Martin's in his 2nd year, they've got a rookie Terry Glenn to go along with Ben Coates and Troy Brown in their prime and the offense is pretty beastly, while the defense is good enough behind a bunch of super guys like Willie McGinest, Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy and Tedy Bruschi.

Football outsiders breaks down their adjusted games lots stat per unit:

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2017/2016-adjusted-games-lost-unit

Patriots had the healthiest defense, Rams on offense.

Bears and Vikings were the most injured respectively.

The Vikings nearly double up the 2nd most injured team when it comes to offensive line.

The next largest gap is at WR where the Chargers lost over 2 years worth of starting WR play from their group.

Patriots & Packers were super healthy on their Dline, while the Rams and Jaguars linebackers missed no time.

I think Bo Jackson is fair considering he was the #1 overall pick and they hosed with him so egregiously, that the guy said gently caress you and played baseball instead is probably the worst.

The Patriots should probably be Kenneth Sims who was just a massive underperformer but was drafted 1st overall instead of Cris Canty or any of the other outright busts the Pats have had at the end of the 1st round.
