Let's Play Stardew Valley! What is Stardew Valley? Stardew Valley is a relatively new and highly-reviewed indie game available on Steam as well as PS4, Xbox One, and soon-to-be available on the Nintendo Switch. For now it's just a single player experience, but the developer is currently working on co-op multiplayer as well. Note that I just said developer. One of the coolest things about this game is that it was developed by just one man (Eric Barone aka ConcernedApe) over the course of four years, including all of the art and music! Don't dodge the question, what is Stardew Valley? Basically, it's a reimagining of Harvest Moon. As far as exactly what Harvest Moon was like, you got me, I've never played it. The graphics and sound are firmly SNES level, and I think they fit the game perfectly. ConcernedApe himself said "The gameplay in Harvest Moon was usually fun, but I felt like no title in the series ever brought it all together in a perfect way, my idea with Stardew Valley was to address the problems I had with Harvest Moon, as well as create more 'purpose' with tried-and-true gameplay elements such as crafting and quests." More purpose? What else is there to do than farm vegetables? The core gameplay is farming vegetables and livestock to make money while befriending all of the other inhabitants of the valley. The rest of it reads like a WoW expansion list of bullet points: Mining, fishing, cooking, simple combat, daily chores, collecting swag to decorate your body and house, minigames, quests. It might sound boring and grindy, but I have to admit that I have a ridiculous amount of time in this game and it never felt like a chore. The developer did a really solid job putting that next "accomplishment" just far enough out of reach to make you want to reach for it without getting burned out. OK, hot shot, how are you going to handle LPing such a grindy game then, huh? Well, I figure I'm going to give a decent taste of what I'm actually doing, then if I need to repetitively grind stuff out for a few in-game days with nothing to say I'll just do it in between videos or do some editing if I need to. This LP is specifically for this thread so just let me know how you guys prefer it once we get started. Thread participation? Yes please! There's only a few heavy decisions to make, but as the game goes on we do have a few choices that I'll address in the videos. We can also do some minor fun stuff like naming livestock and whatnot. As of now, the plan is to do something like one or two half-hour videos per week. That should give the thread plenty of time to keep up. I don't need to pre-record a game like this in chunks so I'm striving for maximum thread interaction wherever possible. Spoilers? There's not too much in the way of plot to spoil, but please err on the side of tagging things if they happen to be something we haven't gotten to yet, such as the villager cutscenes we get as we befriend them. I've played through the whole game so I won't be spoiled, but try to be considerate to the other posters. Pursus fucked around with this message at 11:50 on Apr 11, 2017 |

I was just figuring on asking in the video, but since there's not too many options coming up, I can just list them here: *Name the dog/horse/misc livestock *Who do we romance? *Joja vs. Pierre's *Maybe which order to get farm buildings? The next one coming up soon is to name the dog, then it's the Joja/Pierre choice

Alright, it looks like we're trending towards Pierre's. We still have a little while to see if the winds of opinion switch on that one. I uploaded episode one last Tuesday, so I guess I'll do the next episode somewhere around next Tuesday. I'll do a strawpoll for the dog name in a day or two because I think there's a chance it might come up in the next few days (edit: in-game days), I figure one option per poster is about right so we have these options so far: Balto Scooby-Doo Dozer Tom Joad Let's see how many more we get in the next few days and I'll strawpoll it up. I'll be recording the next episode in a day or two, so it's time for our first poll: What should we name the dog? Options are: -Arthur -Balto -Dozer -Indiana -Scooby-Doo -Tom Joad I'll check the results and the thread right before I record to give you guys maximum voting time.

Episode 2 is ready to go: Stardew Valley #02 - Community Center The dog has not arrived yet so we have more time to vote on that, and I've posted another poll for the Joja vs. Community Center choice: What should we name the dog? Back Joja or rebuild the Community Center?

Episode 3 is done: Stardew Valley #03 - A Wizard, a Junimo, and a Stray Voting is closed on the dog, but we still have plenty of time to change our minds on Joja (you monster). Back Joja or rebuild the Community Center? JossiRossi posted:Sustainable farming. Don't do mono crop planting, don't use fertilizer, rotate your crops around the farm. Make sure to choose crops that are best suited to the climate and require as little water. I know not all those are game mechanics but whatever, it'd be a dumb challenge that might be fun to see someone try Unfortunately, most of this stuff isn't in the game. We could do some of them like not using fertilizer, but it doesn't actually add any challenge. Everything would just take longer. Also, let me know what you guys think about the frequency of the episodes. Right now I'm doing about one a week, but I can step it up a bit. Wargames said update whenever, but I want to give you guys some time to keep current and discuss stuff. Pursus fucked around with this message at 01:25 on Apr 18, 2017 |

Episode 4 is done: Stardew Valley #04 - Robin's Axe, a New Backpack, and the Egg Festival! The Joja choice is still open, but it's looking like we're just going to be sticking with the Community Center at this point. I'll leave the poll up until the next video then we'll cut it off and make it official. Back Joja or rebuild the Community Center? I cut out a bit more grinding this episode, so I managed to cram 5 days into one video. Whenever we are doing nothing new I'll try to keep doing that or just skip the whole day.

CptWedgie posted:Naming animals would probably be easier if we knew what animals you can raise... which is why I'm assuming you'll be asking for names as you get them. Yeah, I probably should have noted which animals we had access to, huh? We get chickens, ducks, and rabbits in the coop. We get cows, goats, sheep, and pigs in the barn. The coop is going to be the first one we get and chickens are what we're going to load it with at the start. We'll have multiple chickens/cows and only 1-2 each of everything else because the other stuff is just for specialty goods and (I think) they aren't as profitable as the chickens/cows. Keep throwing out ideas and I'll make big polls that can hang around for a couple of weeks. When the time comes, I'll take the top ones off the list as we get new animals. It's still a little while away because I need to get in the mines, then get a silo, then save up for the coop but that's the direction we're heading.

Episode 5 is ready to go: Stardew Valley #05 - The Mines The voting is officially closed on the Joja & Community Center choice, and we are officially fully committed to the community center (which means more fishing for me). We are still looking for plenty of animal names. As I said, if we get a bunch of them I'll throw up some more polls but if we only get a few I'll just use all of them. We're still a while away on the romance because I need to get enough surplus crops to give a bunch of gifts to everyone so you can get to know them all.

Time for episode 6: Stardew Valley #06 - A Furnace, a Silo, and The Flower Dance I think I'd like to start uploading this more often so we can get more done, so I'll either do one video/post twice a week or just drop two videos once a week. We'll see how it goes. Still nothing to vote on at the moment, but we're still looking for more animal names. Names we have so far: Chickens: Kentucky Fried Nugget Cows: Painted Horse Dickie Ducks: Captain Sheep, Pigs, Rabbits, Horse: none

Thanks for the names guys, I was starting to think this LP was already dying like my unwatered crops. I plan to do the next episode Wednesday-ish. Animal names we have so far: Chickens: Kentucky Fried Nugget Cows: Painted Horse Dickie Splat Ducks: Captain Hungry Sobbing Sheep: Cotton Wool Pigs: Napoleon Snowball Rabbits: Crunch Horse: Trombe Vauxhall EDIT: The chickens will be coming first, so the next poll will be for them if anyone's got more suggestions. Blademaster_Aio posted:By the way, how are the controls of this game? Is everything done by mouse or is there some other way to do stuff? WASD to move, click to use tools, number keys or mouse wheel to switch tools. It's all rebindable so you can probably play it all with the keyboard if that's your jam. It can also be played with a gamepad which probably works fine because it's out on the consoles, too. CptWedgie posted:Anyway, I paused to look at the dance itself more closely, and I couldn't find Shane on the sidelines so I think he might be Emily's partner; it could be Sebastian, though- I don't think I could tell those two apart very well in those outfits. Shane's definitely in the dance, I can tell that much. Yeah both of those guys are romanceable so it's probably one of them. Clint was just standing on the sidelines next to me like a chump. Cloud Potato posted:Oh no, cliffhanger! C'mon, Clint, would it have killed you to bring our watering can to the dance for us? Yeah, Clint's was closed because of the dance, which I didn't know would happen. I also noticed in editing that (I think) I planted a few potatoes too late anyway. I honestly don't know if the crops will die or just get stunted. I hope I didn't kill too much cauliflower. Either way, I think we have enough dough to get started in summer, it would just be nicer to have more cash to plant a bunch of seasonal crops right at the beginning. Yeah, we can still get a Joja membership but then Joja will bulldoze the community center. After we complete the center, the Joja choice will go away. I was planning to bang out an episode yesterday, but I got too busy. I'll record the next one either late tonight or early tomorrow. Episode 7 is a go: Stardew Valley #07 - Geodes, Gunthers, and Summer! Now we're up to 5 chicken names and I think the coop is going to be coming up soon, so it's pretty much the last chance to get a name on the pollo poll. To start, the coop will hold 4 chickens so that's how many we'll have. Later on we can get some more if we upgrade the coop.

Yeah, I plan to start to get my gift machine started soon-ish; I'm trying to get a bit more stable profit, hopefully some more tool upgrades and the last backpack before I commit to the gifts because the hearts will decay if I stop talking to them regularly before they get maxxed out. Episode 8 is here: Stardew Valley #08 - Tappers, Mushrooms, Picklers, and Coop Plans We got quite a lot done in this one, and the coop is going to be coming in the next video. Last chance to get those chicken names in. As I said, we have 5 now so if we don't get too many more I'll just end up using all of them because we'll probably end up with like 8 chickens total. If we get more suggestions I'll pop up a poll to see which ones get used. After that it's cows!

Blademaster_Aio posted:How do you easily catch fish? How do you have your green bar hover? Do you have any tips for easy fishing? Is there a spot where only low level fish that are also easy to catch are found? It's all one button to catch, hook, and reel so you might be able to rebind it to spacebar or something if you're having trouble using LMB. Hooking the fish is just in the timing, I usually listen for the noise as my indicator to click. The reeling is the pain. You can make the green bar hover better by using multiple short clicks instead of holding the button down. If you're trying to avoid bouncing off the bottom, you can click right before it hits the bottom to slow it down to minimize the bounce. And of course, better poles allow you to use bait and tackle. The bait just makes fish hit quicker, but there's a lot of good tackle that affects things like how quickly the fish escape. As far as easy fish, I think the shallower you cast the easier the fish so don't max out the cast meter in the beginning. It does get much easier when you level it up a bit. You can catch trash in this game, but you don't have to reel it in. You just need to hook it so according to the wiki you can actually level it up a bit from hooking trash over and over (save your trash in a chest until you get a recycling machine). The ponds on the farm only have trash in them so that's where you want to go for that. Also, you get fishing skill from harvesting crab pots which does not involve the minigame (I'm going to put a few crab pots down next episode I think) but you have to get to fishing 3 in order to craft/buy them. So, without reeling anything in, just catch trash until level 3 and then crab pots from there until you level it up to where you find it easy enough get actual fish for your bundles. Definitely hit the wiki to find out where and when to catch the specific fish you need for the bundles otherwise you'll pull your hair out fishing in the right place but wrong season, etc. The first time I fished was 26:30 in episode 1 and I think the last time I fished in the series was ~13 minutes in on episode 6 (I was either fishing level 3 or 4 there). So that'll give you an idea about how much easier a few levels in fishing makes things. Also, if you completely want to avoid the whole process, check the travelling cart vendor in the woods south of your farm. Her stock is random every time and expensive, but you can get all the fish you need from her over time.

Is it random? It's random to an extent, but the higher your farming level the better the crops. The real answer is just to use fertilizer. Fences are for blocking animals in, so if we wanted to keep one area just for animals full of grass we could do that and they wouldn't walk all over the farm. However, here on Awful Farm we're all about free range dairy products. They only come out if the door is left open and they can come in even if it's closed. It's a handy way to make sure they are all in one place in the morning so we can gather eggs and milk and stuff easier.

Otherwise, you need to keep the 9 adjacent tiles clear ... no rocks, no grass, no crops, no paths, no other trees. Also, you can't overlap the clear spaces, so you have to put two spaces in between two fruit trees (unlike the maples and stuff). The leftover 2 pixel stuff won't hurt them, but you can hoe the land if you want to make sure. Also, the game is on sale for 20% off on the Humble Store for the next few days (still activates and plays through Steam)

There was only three duck suggestions so I added a few of the chicken names that came in late. We'll probably end up with two ducks, so I made it one vote only this time. As of now, there's only three cow names: Painted Horse, Dickie, and Splat. Like chickens, we'll get a quite a few of them so I'll just use them all and probably make some up on my own unless I get some more suggestions. We've still got time before we get there, but if you have any suggestions for pigs, goats, rabbits, sheep, or our horse go ahead and throw them in the thread and I'll make sure to add them to those polls when the time comes.

The duck poll is closed, but the cow poll is ready to go: What should we name our cows? This is another "allow multiple answers" one, so go ahead and vote for any you like. The options are as follows: Abigail, the gamer girl who likes swords Alex, the jock with the rock-hard abs Elliot, the author with the marvelous hair Emily, the magical hippie girl with the parrot Haley, the barbie doll who likes photography Harvey, the overworked doctor who loves airplanes Leah, the ex-city-dwelling sculptor Maru, the brainy nurse/inventor Penny, the nurturing teacher with the drunk mother Sam, the guitar playing skateboarder Sebastian, the computer programming edgelord with a motorcycle Shane, the recently less depressed blue chicken lover I plan to leave the poll active for two weeks so everyone has a chance to get their votes in.

Episodes 27 & 28 are bundled up: Stardew Valley #27 - Finishing the Community Center Stardew Valley #28 - Junimo Huts and the Casino The romance poll is still live until next week so get your votes in as soon as you can: Who should we romance? As I mentioned in the video, we're going to go back to doing single videos at a time going forward because the bulk of the plot has happened by now so there's a lot of grinding to do in between each cut. There's still more to come, it's just a lot more spaced out.

Episode 29 is all dried up: Stardew Valley #29 - The Last House Upgrade, Missing Animals, and the Real Grange The romance poll is over and it's time to sow our seeds. We also get the final house upgrade and deal with the driest fall in the history of the world. I need one more round of suggestions from you guys and that's what we should name our kids. I'm starting to wrap up the game now, I'm figuring a few more episodes and we'll have all of the plot stuff done.

Episode 30 is finished: Stardew Valley #30 - Finale I was planning to do another video or so, but once I got into it I realized that we've finished pretty much the whole plot so it's time to say goodbye to Awful Farm and Stardew Valley. I thank you all for keeping up with this playthrough and making your suggestions. I really hope you've enjoyed it, let me know what you guys thought of it. I might do another LP on the forums if I can think of another game that I feel will work with the longer schedule. We'll see how it goes.
